How do you fight Guardian Sentinels?

Watched Exigeous' guide to unlocking the FSD Booster, went out to HD whatsisname, parked really close to the ruins with my DbX (2 point defense), and as soon as the two initial columns activated two sentinels appeared. Cool, I thought, here we go! Let's do this!

Then they shot my SRV and flipped me over. I was stuck in those useless ruins and couldn't do a damn thing about it, and they blew up my one and only SRV (does the video even mention to bring two??).

? I just travelled 2000LY to have some goon alien robots basically hold me down and beat me with bars of soap in socks.

How do I get around this? I'm extremely frustrated. If I bother going anywhere like that again I'd like to know how to avoid this happening, it's pretty lame and patience-wearing.

Cheers!

The handbrake is your friend. I believe they cannot flip you if it is on.
I know you are already on site, but if you fit a point defence on top (underneath wont work) of your ship, this will take out most of the sentinel missiles, if you are parked close.
I use a DBX for guardian gathering, small and easy to land nearby.
Also, once a sentinel is active, try to use cover to pop out, blast it, hide, repeat.
I would say 2pips in shields, 4 pips in weapons.

Good luck, you can do it.

Don't get hit.
Make sure to only activate 1 or 2 sentinels at a time, then use the terrain to your advantage. Their missile launch is preceded by pretty obvious light & sound. As soon as they are charging up to fire, break line of sight. It's like playing the easiest FPS level possible - strafe using something to shield you.

L2SRV. Sounds like you don't know about how to right yourself, how to run and hide, etc etc . Was out at two Guardian Structures yesterday, was fine. Sadly in a cobra I had no PD, but adds to the fun :)

Thanks for the tip about the handbrake, hadn't seen that before. And I'm not on site, I only had the one SRV and have had to come back to the bubble, everything I read said that they're almost too easy to kill and no real threat so I saved the excess mass and only carried one. I made sure my point defense were on the top of my ship too, they worked really well for what that's worth (insert shrug emoji)...

The problem I had was that they flipped me immediately on being hit and I couldn't right my SRV whatsoever, I've gotten stuck after rolling off hills or whatnot a few times on planets (and that one spot at Dav's Hope) but after a few jiggles and some thruster gotten free. Not the case here!

Also, this Guardian site didn't have a smooth road leading to the orb thing and the first two pylons, it had a bunch of steps that I had to thrust over which wasn't mentioned anywhere and made it difficult to aim at them due to the potato-level autoaim the SRV has.

I'll try again with the handbrake on (which makes no sense physically but hey, if it works!). Cheers buddy.

Oh yes, naturally I've never driven an SRV and the first trip I decided to take with it was 1000LY out of the bubble, and now I'm complaining because the game didn't automatically make me King Of Space.

Congratulations on your success.

A couple of things to try.

Method 1:
Fight at a 90 degree angle to the sentinel. Duck out of LOS when they start to do the missile warmup. Pop in and out of cover.

Method 2:
Put down the hand brake. Shoot sentinel. (you can still try ducking)

All pips to shield for getting hit, all pips to weaps when shooting back. Also, don't scare up too many at once.

I got bored of playing dodge the sentinels at the fighter data site.... so I now just start the event up, then race around the site bringing up each tower, not worrying about the sentinels, and then dive into my ship.

Take off..... and nail each one with a multi-cannon... then land and I can charge all the pillars up in peace

Bill

Stratagy and tactics.... yeah heard of them mate but big guns are better :D

That actually sounds loads more fun than how i was doing it!

Use the turret view

... I think you really need to learn what your SRV can do and practice a bit more to really enjoy the game because your posts here read like you are running before you know how to make your SRV crawl. ;)

Handbrake is usefull but if you're on the high ground they will flip you over nevertheless. Position yourself so that their shots' "push" wouldn't flip you over. I put full pips on SYS and rest on WEP when I'm fighting against 3 or 4 of those. I put full pips on WEP if they are like 2 or 1. Have point defence on your ship to destroy missles and land it close to the site.

Also when you get flipped over you can put pips on the engines and press space and A or D to correct yourself. If you're going to do multiple runs have materials for refuel and rearm. Premium refuel lasts for very long but you're often gonna need to synth ammo. I have used like %80 of my ammo per run, note that I also destroyed leaning towers for mats - which I recommend you to do so if you're gonna unlock lots of stuff.

Thanks for all the tips folks, I really do appreciate it!

So, keeping at a right angle to fire with the handbrake on and avoiding high ground are from what I read the the only (rather important!) things I didn't do right - and I almost exclusively play with the turret view, but the snap-to in this case was part of my undoing.

I really wish I'd captured a video of what happened and put it on YouTube to demonstrate what went on, I can only guess that I was unlucky and managed to get well and truly jammed into a turtle position - but thanks to all of your words of wisdom hopefully I'll never be caught out like that again ;)

This time around I've got 4 SRVs, 2 point defense, synthesis mats for a ton of reloads and repairs... and a beam laser, which I'm going to use with some glee after I spawn some and make a run for it to my ship. Thanks again for the advice, hopefully I'll be posting a screenshot of a success rather than a pile of SRV chunks.

Haha, OP, you stink. Don't get flipped over, is all. The sentinels do have kinetic weaponry but they do absolutely poor damage. Just put two pips to shields, 4 to WEP, and gun them down one by one. If you're still getting flipped, try to dodge the shots or use cover, and don't flip in a place that you can't escape from.

Yeah, I know, and naturally as one does I tried not to get flipped over but as I explained originally it was like an instant slapdown and I couldn't get out of it... It must have been bad luck or some sort of control . Going back and using the handbrake as suggested worked perfectly - I just unlocked the FSD booster and I'm en route to do the Shield booster.

Damage tanking them seemed to work better than actual tanking, I just kept the pips in 3/1/3 unless I made a mistake and had 2 in my LOS at once.

I'd like to see the handbrake thing mentioned in some of the guides I read, it's not an intuitive leap to associate braking with a magical ability to suddenly have the tyres gain superglue power... There's game mechanics and then there's arcane, esoteric game mechanics. Still, it worked.

Thanks to everyone who helped out with this, I owe you a jettisoned beer sometime :)

Good to hear you've got your FSD booster

Sounds like first time you got real unlucky and got flipped into a nice SRV shaped hole, have not had that happen at a guardian site but Ive been stuck for good a few times before... once your jammed your jammed

for future reference theres a station in the pencil sector which I think has outfitting, bit closer to the guardian stuff if you need a new SRV

Also dont forget you can repair your srv, even during combat. I've farmed most of the guardian stuff and contrary to what all the pros here say, you will get flipped sometime depending on the angle they approach. If you are really worried about it or bad at flipping yourself back over (using their 'push' while boosting helps) try to position yourself near a structure where you can get an angle on them and shoot but their shots dont hit you.
