How do you guys pull off FA-OFF flight?

o7 CMDRs,

whenever i try to pull off some FA-OFF maneuver for any longer than 5 seconds everything just goes into spin mayhem that i cant control, try to offset the roll and it starts the opposite way..

how did FA-OFF gods git so gud that its like they are in FA-ON?

any input is greatly appericated!

I can do it for a little bit too, it takes a REALLY gentle hand. I do wish it stabilized orientation a little, while still letting you swing around.

It won't come quickly; you have to commit dozens of hours to become proficient and God only knows how many to become "godlike." Practice practice practice.

What controls are you using?

I'm on Xbox so its a little different, but what I've done over the last few months is just to turn it off for a few seconds at a time, especially during combat. Combining the maneuvers has given me a much better understanding of how to control it.

At first, start by doing 'fa off noob turns', when someone passes you, you FA off and pitch hard, turning it back on when they're in your firing line to stabilise the ship. FA off hold can be pretty damn cool for fighters and small ships. Once you get used to that, don't turn it back on. Assuming you use mouse, turn on relative mouse controls and be ready to spend ages fiddling to get it to feel good. It stops the ship from turning when you move the mouse. It cripples you in supercruise, so you need extra pitch keys bound.

Also, unless you're using your thumb or space bar for something, I found them to be a much better for FA off than default Z.

Top tip: remember that you can always turn FA back on again, momentarily, to sort yourself out when it all goes wrong.

Personally, I started by just switching it off and then doing stuff like orienting myself ready for docking or following a ship around in a RES.
Start with basic stuff and turn it back on when you lose control.
As you gain experience you'll find you can do more and more stuff without having to turn it back on.

I tend to advise the opposite; turn FA Off and then deep six the button. Sort of a sink or swim kind of approach. With that said, I wouldn't do it in my most expensive ship, and I wouldn't necessarily put myself in the most dangerous situations straight away. Pick a cheap, small ship, get rid of flight assist altogether and then just spend a week bouncing off rocks, scooping cargo and landing.

Turn it off and never turn it back on.

Turn relative mouse on for both yaw and pitch. Change yaw to mouse, and roll to Q/E or A/D. Turn the mouse deadzone option to 0% and set relative mouse rate to 50%.

Holy crap. This is a game changer. I just switched the yaw to mouse and my control is like a million times higher. I feel silly now....1000 hours in!!!!

EDIT: ok it's better when I think about it but the movements are too engrained at this point and I can't control my ship!

I can fly FA-off with gimballed weapons but with fixed I do not have the fine control to keep weapons on target.

I use X52 HOTAS.

Any tips?

Just one thing: Practise and figure out how the Controls work in fa-off. Try to make improvements all the time.

IT will take some weeks but then your hooked :)

Oh my, relative mouse movement changes it a lot.

But yeah, pitch/yaw on the mouse was the original advice that I saw, and it works nicely. Combat is nice for relative, but for just exploring, it gets annoying.

Start with station approaches. Glide into position when go FA on.

Try surface landings, the first 90 percent, then go FA on for the last bit.

Adjust one axis at a time. Slow gentle adjustments.

You'll soon be flying.

Practice, look up videos, practice, experiment, practice, etc. I turned flight assist off a long time ago and didn't turn it back on again. There are a great wealth of videos out there on youtube, and there's a player group called Newton's Gambit that is based around fa off. Feel free to join the Discord and ask questions.

An Elite controller helps, I remapped everything off of X+B and set X to left yaw and B to right yaw, then mapped those to the paddles on the back. If you're using alternate flight control switching to hop between yaw and roll, then FA off is brutal.

So: Left stick is pitch/roll, right stick thrust is vert/horizontal, and X+B on the paddles like rudders.
