How do you guys setup your fire groups?

My first ship after my Sidey was a Cobra MkIII without weapons, built strictly for hauling. But recently I just picked up a Viper MkIV with the intent of doing a little bounty hunting. I installed beam lasers, multicannons, chaff, FSD intertictor and a kill warrant scanner.

How do you guys setup your fire groups for your builds? Do you have any recommendations for mine?

In your case, I would go with something like this...

Group 1:
Primary: Interdictor

Group 2:
Primary: Lasers
Secondary: Kill Warrant Scanner

Group 3:
Primary: Lasers
Secondary: Multicannons

I would bind chaff to it's own dedicated button.

This way, when you engage an enemy you can Interdict them. The moment you drop into space, switch to to the next group and start KWS scan. The moment it finishes, you can start firing lasers straight away.
Flick to next group and you can still fire your lasers and fire multicannon when the shields are down.
If you take them out and want to target another enemy, flick next group twice to get back to lasers and KWS. Wash, rinse, repeat. :)

You'll have to pack the chaff as secondary for the interdictor, we have no ability to bind it separately from my experience.

the joystick.
My chaff is bound to "C" key on my X52

Just need 1 fire group in my Vulture: -
Share KWS and Turrets on button 1 - then share Interdictor with Beams on button 2 and have turrets fire at my target also. I don't need to switch turret mode but can if need be and still fire with button 1.
Same on bigger ships but simply add a 2nd group for Missiles, Torps, Canons, etc.

Always be mindful of which fire group you're on.

Last night, I was bounty hunting in a HIRES. I'd just finished off one guy and saw another. However I forgot to change my fire group to the one with the KWS, so rather than scanning the guy for bounties like I thought I was about to do, I ended up firing on a clean pilot with my multicannons.

I had to high-tail it out of the system until my bounty expired (thankfully it was only a 200cr bounty which expired after 10 minutes). At the time I FSD jumped I had the pilot I fired on and three security vessels firing at me and they had managed to drop my shields.

I would go:

G1: beams 1; multis 2
G2: beams 1; kw scanner 2
G3: Interdictor 1; chaff 2

You may want to switch 1 and 2 based on your preference. I always have G1 reserved to control all my weapons.

My preference would be-
Firegroup 1-
Right trigger - KWS, FSI
Left trigger - Chaff

2-
Right trigger - beams, KWS
Left trigger - multis

Having the kws and Chaff on its own means you can enjoy peacefully scanning your targets.

If you are doing a little discovery scanning as well while you're hunting, I always stick that on the same trigger as Chaff.

You can't pop Chaff in supercruise so it's always a good idea to match up SC/nonSC functions like that on same group/trigger to save having lots of firegroups on the go.

You can put your interdictor in the same group as your primary or secondary weapon.
It won't do anything in normal space anyway.
And weapons won't fire in supercruise, which is when you would use the interdictor.

On my Viper I currently Run just the one group as I'm running a full laser setup. Mainly so I don't have to keep jumping in and out the system to reload during this weeks CG

So currently Primary is set to Kill Warrant Scanner and Secondary four laser banks

Personally... I always keep my main lasers on Primary fire for every group... just in case I'm ambushed I don't want to have to fiddle around with my fire groups in case I'm not paying attention to what is selected.

Here's my typical setup:

Group 1:
Primary - Lasers
Secondary - Adv. Discovery Scanner

Group 2:
Primary - Lasers
Secondary - FSD Interdictor

Group 3:
Primary - Lasers
Secondary - Kill Warrant Scanner

Group 4:
Primary - Lasers
Secondary - Kinetic Weapon

I never equip Chaff/Shield Cells/Heat Sinks to my fire groups. These can be bound to other controls and with the X-55 I have plenty of those.

I would use 3 groups.

Group one is Beams to the right trigger if you have 2 and Multi on the left.
Group 2 is one beam laser on the left and Multi on the right. This will allow you to contuniusly fire the beam laser while conserving energy.
Group 3 is Interdictor/Warrent scanner and basic discovery.

Skipping between groups will always be the right bumper then.

I would go:

G1: beams 1; multis 2
G2: beams 1; kw scanner 2
G3: Interdictor 1; chaff 2

You may want to switch 1 and 2 based on your preference. I always have G1 reserved to control all my weapons.

I never have thermal and kinetic weapons assigned to the same fire group, as kinetic weapons are virtually useless against shields. I don't want to waste ammo by firing them when the target is still shielded.

You say that but I'm not a big fan of those all multicannon FDLs that are so hip to use these days.

I actually purchased a FDL last night. I've not flown it yet, but I've armed it with Gimballed pulse lasers on all four medium hardpoints, and a Plasma Accelerator on the huge hardpoint.

Can't afford the military grade composite for the bulkheads yet, but I figured out this setup would be more than adequate to do some damage in PvE.

For Viper MK4

Firegroup 1
Prim - Railguns
Sec - chaff

Firegroup 2
Prim - Beam Lasers
Sec - Chaff

Fire group 3
Prim - D Scanner / Kill Warrant Scanner
Sec - FSD Wake Scanner / FDS Inerdictor
