How do you know what system to trade to?

Im trying trading for the first time and Im having trouble figuring out what is the best trade route. How do I figure that out? Can anyone help please?

Or if you don't want to use any external tools and would rather figure it out yourself (recommended - much more fun that way IMHO!) - go to the Commodities Market in game and by each commodity you have the information regarding which economy type it's produced and consumed by. For most of the commodities it will list a few nearby systems the goods are being exported to.

One confirmed rule by Frontier is that the population of the system matters, so I guess the higher the pop, the higher the supply/demand.

The states that the given station/outpost controlling faction can also affects the market is my understanding, but I'm not 100% on that.

Another neat thing to do is to go to the Galaxy Map and buy as many trade data as you can for the surrounding systems and then use the trade routes filters to display the trade routes.

For DIY look at the Commodity in question in the market and a list on the upper righthand side will show Import/Export sytems that are nearby. Also on your Galaxy map you can filter for Economy types for trade routes.
 
what i like to do is to buy commodities that are legal in the buy system. And Illegal in the sell system..


But, that's the smugglers way... High profit, high reward, high fine if scanned...
 
Disclaimer - I've not bulk traded since Engineers update so I could be a bit off on this but previously:-

Imperial Systems. Best profit was on Imp Slaves / Indium or Berylium routes and up to 4.5k pt. you needed to find Agri/Industrial economy on Torval control for slaves the a recurring Extraction/Refinery economy not in Torval control to get the metals.

Independents and Federation, best profits between Progenitor Cells and Platinum routes.

Now add in boom and bust states for the most profitable commodity. Buy at Bust and sell at Boom. Your return leg will suffer the boom to bust modifier so take the cheeper commodity back, assuming an A-B to B-A type route.

So your holy grail, Bust Agri / Industrial in Torval control to Boom Extraction / Refinery not in Torval control. Preferably under 12ly apart with less than 500ls to station.

If you find that combo be sure to also stock up on rocking horse poop, hens teeth and give Elvis a lift home. 😉

Outpost can return higher profit if your getting started as they can't be farmed out by TradaConda wings. Supply and price drops rapidly when big ships start moving 500t per trip on a frequent basis. We also share the background trade sim with the PC boys and they can negatively affect our XB trading.
