Ships How do you name your ships?

When I purchased the game for the first time for the PS5, the game was named "Elite Dangerous: Horizons". Most probably because of that name, and because of lack of greater inspiration, I named my started Sidewinder "Blue Horizon". I actually ended up liking that name so much that I have named all my further ships after it:
  • Blue Horizon: My starter Sidewinder.
  • Blue Horizon II: The next ship I bought, the Cobra Mk III.
  • Blue Horizon III: The next ship I bought, the Krait Mk II. (This is actually the ship I like the most. It looks badass and at least according to my experience it has the best maneuverability of all the ships I own. However, I have not been using it because of it limited jump range, as I'm currently engaged in heavy exploration.)
  • Blue Horizon IV: A Python I bought explicitly for community goals, more precisely, to be able to haul more cargo in one trip. After all, it has all the same expansion slots as the Krait Mk II, plus one additional rank 6 slot, which makes it significantly more spacious for cargo transport. While it looks sleek and cool, I actually don't like it as much as the Krait.
  • Blue Horizon V: My trusty Asp Explorer, which I have been now using for a quite long time for long-distance exploration. It's ugly, it has much less capacity than the Python and the Krait, but it's reliable and it jumps really far.

I use descriptive names or famous related names, or combinations.

Joe - My 850m/s iCourier, it's my taxi for on foot missions, when I'm buying a new ship I leave it at Jameson and ship it back home etc. Joe as in 'Joe Le Taxi'.
TractOrca - I use it for farming HGE's etc, Tractor Orca.
Relica - Krait Phantom, exploration ship I built to go to the guardian ruins.
Kyrenia - Cutter, named after a greek merchant ship.
Yo-Yo - Cutter, I use it to go back and forth between station and Fleet Carrier for large trades.
Fuel Mule - Python, I needed a medium cargo ship for tritium runs.
Scapha - Python, rigged for passenger rescue (Scapha is Latin for Lifeboat, so sayeth Google).
Scaranger - Anaconda, mining, Scavenger Ranger.
Templar - Crusader, combat, CZ's, Knights Templar, crusades.
Asphodel - Corvette, named after a famous navy Corvette, also the flower said to carpet Hades.
Extermis - Krait MkII, AX scout killer. Exterminate.
Akicita - Chieftan, "among the Sioux peoples, having military and police-like functions" ... it was originally a combat/bounty hunter ship but is now rigged for AX.
Parabellum - Challenger, a 5 AX weapon ship, prepare for war.
Helio Spectre - Federal Gunship, there was a Gunship named the Spectre, hence Helio Spectre, 6 AX weapon experiment, only just built it not actually flown it with 6 weapons yet.

I've also had a 400 ton cargo Anaconda named Kerkorous, ancient merchant vessels could carry 400 tons, the first to do so. And 2 Asp Explorers, the Magellen and Magellan II. After my sidewinder I grabbed a cobra mk3 and then a python, which was the first ship I named; Mercator. That's when I started to rack up credits and I decided to shoot for a Fleet Carrier which I named Mercator Ascendant.

Roman emperors in order for me, 40th ship brings me up to Hostilian. Although the fleet carrier is Sid James and the legacy fleet carrier is Kenneth Williams. Wish I could still get them in orbit together sometimes.

lol my asp bubble hopper is also called Joe Le Taxi

ED is such a dark dystopian game I tend to give my ships silly names for balance;

Anaconda Rescue Ship - Brave Sir Robin (because it's built to run away)
Python - Genus Pythonidae
Krait II Explorer - Herbie (the MK II is described as a reimagining of the Krait, as the VW Beetle was reimagined)
Krait II AX Ship - Krait Expectations
Phantom - Millennium Pancake
Asp X - Cleo (because in legend at least, Cleopatra was bitten by an Asp)
Vulture - Carrion Regardless
Cutter - Mid Life Crisis (because it reminds me of the cars men buy when they are 50 to try and pick up women who are 20, just needs the red leather upholstery)
Viper, used for courier missions - Fedex
DBX - Jiminy (because someone said it looked like a grasshopper or cricket)
Dolphin - Ecco

Fleet Carrier - Mildly Amused Roger
Dolphin - AX Research GSS R.J. McReady
DBX - GSS Long Jump Silver
Cobra Mk III - GSS MEIN HERZ BRENNT
Krait Mk II - GSS SUSPENDED IN DUSK
Krait Mk II - GSS KRAITEE SACKHOFF
Alliance Chieftain - GSS Josephus A Miller
Python - GSS ROCKHOPPER
Python - GSS COPPERHEAD ROAD
Anaconda - BALLAD OF DWIGHT FRY
Type-9 Heavy - GSS NELLIE D'ELEPHANT
Type-6 - A BRICK ON THE WIND
Vulture - LEGITIMATE BUSINESSMAN
Imperial Cutter - GSS DEATH OF RATS

after the late Jim.Bowen died I named my sidewinder Bully's Special Prize.

I figure the sidewinder is the Elite Dangerous equivalent of the star prize in bulls eye

I think if you do a search you'll find a well fed thread that already covered the same topic. Pretty sure I already put my answer in there. ;)

Well, I'm going to play along :).

I always have trouble naming things in games. My CMDR names come from some of my favorite movies or television shows. My main's name (and forum name, too) is taken from the brilliant Jim Jarmusch movie "Night on Earth". I have two alts who are called Rupert Anderson (Mississippi Burning) and Harold Larch (from the Monty Python court scene with Cardinal Richelieu).

My main's Carrier is called "Night on Earth" for obvious reasons. With my ships, I always have some trouble coming up with names. I ususally pick from the Monty Python or Douglas Adams universes, or from general SciFi or other movies. Sometimes I use expressions I find funny at that moment:
  • My Cobra III is called "Rabbit of Caerbannog", and my bounty hunting Mamba is called "Cave of Caerbannog".
  • My iCourier is called "Brave Sir Robin" for obvious reasons.
  • As for other Monty Python ships, my exploration Beluga is called "Dinsdale", my core mining Python is called "Spiny Norman", and my evac Python is called "Luigi Vercotti".
  • my Science Phantom is called Nostromo, because how can you not have a ship called as such. I have another Phantom that is called "Share and Enjoy".
  • my exploration Dolphin is called "EV Travis Bickle". Because the Dolphin is a space taxi. And "EV" for "Exploration Vessel".
  • my Battle Corvette is called "Delusion of Grandeur", because it is exactly that.
  • my Odyssey mission runner AspX is called "Great Expectations", because when I built it and was thinking about a name, the Eagles' "New Kid in Town" was on the radio, and they just sang that phrase (yes, I am old, and I listen to lyrics).
  • my bounty hunting Krait II is called "Intentionally Blank", because I always found it funny when the first page in some books was labeled as such.
  • my DBX is called "Blue Thunder", again, for obvious reasons.
  • my Vulture is called "The Tick" because it looks like one and is equally annoying.
  • my Cutter is called "Spaceballs One", because how can you not.
  • I have a Chieftain in storage that is called "Chez Paul", because in the beginning, I named my ships after locations from the Blues Brothers movie.
  • Last but not least, I have a trading Python that is called "Meersdonk" after the greatest german truck driver in television history.

I also have a bunch of ships called "Storage". Don't know why.

Dolphin - Space Taxi 1
Beluga - Space Taxi 2

Python (multipurpose and now for elections) - U.S.S. Planet Express (Futurama reference, with text "Bender" on ship)

Anaconda (explo build) - Travel Snake
Krait Phantom - Flyin' Dutchman
Aspx - Puddle Jumper (Stargate Atlantis reference)
Dbx - Del Clinga (latin name of the village where I grew up)

Corvette - Bumblebee (Transformer reference)
Corvette - Navis Aurea (latin for Golden Ship, have gold skin)

Cutter (mulitpurpose) - The Black Pearl
Cutter (mining) - Silent Mary
Cutter (ax) - AX Cutter
Cutter (cargo) - Space Truckin' 2

Type-9 (cargo) - Space Truckin'

FDL (pvp build) - Tenebris Flandrica (my cmdr name in latin)

Imperial Clipper - My mini Cutter

Type-10 (AX) - Raxxla (because why not, at least I can say I found it ;-) )

Only sold one ship, a Dolphin, but bought it back not so long ago

I use song titles or bits of lyrics for all my ships. Mainly because it amuses me.

My Fer-de-Lance is: "All Night to Get Lucky"
My Cutter is: "And take your Money" (registration: [BANG])
My Imperial Courier is called: "Wild Thing"

...anyway, I have 27 ships at the moment and they're all named after either songs or lyrics.
