Ships How do you name your ships?

I don't name them, until something significant happens in that ship, either in terms of the roleplay in my head or gameplay wise.

My ships have to earn their names, basically, and the names are part of that ship's history within my fleet.

Yeah that's good, after much time and years of use my T6 explorer has earned a new name, it is now "Hotbrick Desiato" for clearly obvious reasons!

I commonly pick from Greek mythology. Resulting in things like "Herald of Erebos", Feast of Cronos", "Phaeton's Cavalcade" or "Harbinger of Soteria". Great thing about the Greek is that they have a god/titan/spirit/beast for everything.

Started out with specturm wdges because of their shape

SPECTRUM WEDGE MK4 - Krait MkII Combat
SPECTRUM WEDGE MK3 - Krait Phantom explorer
SPECTRUM WEDGE MKII - Cobra MkIII
spectrum wedge - Sidewinder

CRASH COREJUMP - Python Trader
CRASH COREHUMP - Python Rescue build
CRASH COREBUMP - Asp Explorer Miner

Then it just started to get wierd

Leadsled - Federal Dropship modifed shard antixeno
CHIITAN'S REVENGE - Alliance Chieftain antixeno
THE MILLENNIUM BUG - Imperial Courier Combat
IN MEMORY OF KEHAAR - Vulture Combat

TURBOWHALE - Imperial Clipper Miner
BOWL OF PETUNIAS - Imperial Cutter Trader

The Spacebar - Dolphin bubble bus
Spacebar 2 - Orca Malstrom explorer
The Fat Spacebar - Beluga Liner

I'm a little all over the place with my names, but most of them reference movies or other video games. Some are just named something fun. Names usually get more elaborate as the ship gets bigger. Some highlights include;

  • Edgerunner: Viper mk3, referencing Cyberpunk 2077/Edgerunners
  • Firebrand: Anti-AX Chieftan, named after the Skyranger pilot from XCOM 2
  • The Pork Chop Express: Type-7, named after Jack Burton's truck from Big Trouble in Little China
  • Shadowbringer: Krait mk2, named after FFXIV's third expansion
  • BURNING RESCUE: AX rescue Python, named after the firefighting rescue squad from Promare
  • Black Sunshine: Assassination-focused Mamba, named after the White Zombie song "Black Sunshine"
  • Heavy Metal Queen: Type-9, named after VT's episode from Cowboy Bebop
  • Meteion's Song: Anaconda, referencing Meteion from FFXIV
  • Amaurot's Legacy: Fleet Carrier, referencing FFXIV

lol not nearly as imaginative as many above.

I name most of mine after USN aircraft carriers (including changing the ID to the historical hull number).

So far,

Langley (CV 1) - Starter Sidewinder
Ranger (CV 4) - Vulture
Essex (CV 9) - Federal Assault Ship
Intrepid (CV 11) - Diamondback Explorer
Ticonderoga (CV 14) - Imperial Clipper
Boxer (CV 21) - Python
Oriskany (CV 34) - Dolphin
Princeton (CV 37) - Federal Dropship
Shangri-La (CV 38) - Cobra Mk III
Monterey (CVL 26) - Imperial Courier
Camden (AOE 2) - Type 9 (primary job is lugging tritium for the FC, an oiler name just seemed appropriate)

FC is Yorktown. Sadly, of course, cannot alter the hull designation number, which would be CV 5 if I could.

Looking ahead, Imperial Cutter and Federal Corvette will be commissioned as Lexington (CV 2) and Saratoga (CV 3), respectively.

Wasp (CV 7), Hornet (CV 8), Constellation (CV 64), Kitty Hawk (CV 63), Independence (CV 61), Coral Sea (CV 43) and Valley Forge (CV 45) are the "short list" for the next few ships I pick up.

Some might note the omission of Enterprise (CV 6), possibly the most famous of them all. In a space game, just smacked too much of a Star Trek reference, I guess, so I've avoided it.

For me it's a combination of descriptive and what feels right. I didn't bother naming my first few ships, because they hadn't earned their name.

  • Bird of Prey: Vulture
  • Wanderer: Chieftain, the first ship with which I went outside the bubble, I wandered across many ancient ruins with it.
  • Bug Spray: Krait Mk2, AX, it uses AX multi cannons to spray a lot of bullets to kill scouts (bugs).
  • Big Momma: Anaconda, I kinda see it as a mother, because it has a fighter bay (and thus 'baby' ships).
  • Reaper: FdL, because it's good at killing things.
  • Willem Barentz: ASPX, named after a famous Dutch explorer.
  • David: Chieftain, AX anti-interceptor, so it's like David killing Goliath.
  • Pioneer: Krait Mk2, combat / all purpose ship in Colonia.
  • Kozak: Python, miner in Colonia. After naming my other Colonia ship after something in the wild west, I wanted to name this ship after something in the wild east.
  • Ghost: iCourier, used for surface missions and smuggling.
  • Gold Digger: Python, miner.
The name of my FC changes fairly regularly depending on the circumstances. Sometimes it's entirely descriptive, like "Landmines for sale". Its default name used to be "Piet Hein" (a famous Dutch hero, who sank the Spanish silver fleet), but after noticing that often weird things happened after a hyperspace jump, its default name changed to "Vliegende Hollander" (Flying Dutchman, a famous ghost ship).

That's kind of funny, because to me, and a lot of Danes I'm sure, Piet Hein was a Danish polymath (Inventor, Scientist, Designer, Poet, and more...) - who is probably best known for his little poems that were published daily in most newspapers for decades.

I had no idea that he had a famous ancestor in the Netherlands :D

My carrier is named "Mother Goose". Bc, yknow, it carries around all the little goslings.

Some of my ships are named after mythological creatures, but there are exceptions. Some examples:

Viper III: Brutale - bc with 2 Cytos and 2 Plasmas it packs an absurd punch for its weight class
DBX: Sharanyu - after a figure from Vedic mythology, literally "the one who runs away"
Phantom: Hrimfaxi - a horse from Norse mythology, one of two who draw the chariot of the sun across the sky, literally "rime-fur"
Chieftain: Valkyrie - Germanic mythology again, my favourite combat ship
Challenger: Grimlock - like that dinosaur-transformer, bc of its stubby fore arms
Python: after re-rigging it for AX hot-zone evacuation missions, I renamed it... Snakeshit. Bc it runs so low and fast.
Clipper: Aries, bc like a bighorn sheep, it likes ramming things
Corvette: Pimpmobile, bc hereabout it's kind of a stereotype that (only) pimps ride (Chevy) Corvettes
Type 9 Heavy: Plus Size Model. Nuff said.
Krait Mk II: Garbage Truck, bc I tried it and hated it
Cutter: Cutty Sark, one of the fastest sailing ships in history

I use whatever strikes my fancy, the punnier the better. Or sci-fi or pop culture references.

Anaconda: "Don't Want None"
Eagle: "Red Shirt"
Python: "Serpentine Flyer"
Asp Explorer: "Wanderbus II"
Vulture: "Carry On, Hunter"
Chieftain: "The Orkin Man"
Cobra Mk. III "Moldy Crow"
iClipper: "Blackadder"
iCutter: "Sha'Neyat"
Krait Phantom: "Above and Beyond"
Krait Mk. II: "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride"
DBX: "Explorabee"

Fleet Carriers; Monsoon Memsahib, Malabari Nabob and Yumenguan.
Krait Mk II; Ulysses 31, Telemachus
Anacondas; Sir Patrick Moore, Megiddo
Python; Lakshmi
T9; Nostromo
Corvette; Grey Lady
Asp; Jacques Cousteau
T7s; Couer de Cherbourg, Dunkerque
T6; Biarritz
Phantom; Taklamakan
Diamondback; Brixmis
Keelback; Lima Zulu
Dolphins; Monaco, Venezia
Orca; Vienna
CBR III; Quattro
Viper; Countache
& Many more...

Well, I have 31, so I won't list them all. But here a few...

Black Hole - Fleet carrier, a black hole to pour credits into.
Itinerant Rover - Asp Explorer for... exploring.
Terrapin Station - Krait Phantom also for exploring and because at times it looks like a terrapin and because I like The Dead.
Miner Player II - Python for mining tritium... obviously.
Greased Lightning - iCourier racer with a boost of 885 m/s.
Screaming Eagle - iEagle racer with a boost of 905 m/s.
Big Bang - Viper Mk III racer with a boost of 932 m/s.
Mad Raptor - iCourier for dispatching pirate lords.
Far Out - iCourier with long range weapons that can sit outside an enemy's range and peck away at it until it goes bang.
Gentle Persuasion - FDL for gently persuading NPC's of the errors of their ways.
Anything Goes - Python for multi purpose mission running.

And a bunch of others, all two word names just because... :)

First, I worked my way through Roman / Greek mythology, probably like many commanders. Then I thought: wait, enough with all the deities! Elite Dangerous features a scientific universe (more or less), so I tried to base my ship names on real people that have at least a little bit to do with the purpose of my ship.

LS Emmy Noether: DBX for material gathering
LS Maria Clara: Krait Phantom for HGE farming
LS Annie Easley: General Purpose AspX
LS Kalpana: Bubble Bus/Shuttle
LS Molly Kool: Passenger Python (yes, that's a real name of a real person)
LS Gerasimenko: Python for mining asteroids (not comets, despite the name)
LS Bat-Zabbai: T-9 Space Cow for trading and powerplay
LS Avantibai: Cobra Mk III light combat ship
LS Tolulope: Vulture for bounty hunting
LS Boudicca: Anti-Xeno Chieftain

(The LS simply stands for "Lhorndra's Ship". Yep.)

If I ever own a fleet carrier, it will be the LFC Rosalind Franklin (nothing to do with her profession, just that her impact was as big as a fleet carrier, so to speak.)

heh, right :)

My Steam account has ship's names like:
  • Arche (starter Sidewinder - Arche was the muse of origins and beginings)
  • Tisiphone (mission runner / armed cargo, Dropship)
  • Eirene (armed exploration/taxi DBX),
  • Theia (supply/delivery - aka cargo Python)
  • Algea, (Exploration/taxi AspX)
  • Euthenia (Mining Conda),
  • Paidia (Python passenger/sightseeing),
  • Alala (combat Imperial Courier)
  • Atropos (combat Gunship)
  • Clotho (combat Krait Mk2)
  • Lachesis (combat Challenger)
  • Alecto (hauler Cutter)
  • Rico (core miner Clipper - well not exactly a godess, but a mere Penguin overly obsessed about blowing things up) 😂 😂

Vulture is Outrider (used the most by far).

Python is Ghost Rider (not used to much).

AspX is Sungrazer (generally only used on exploration trips out of the bubble).

Imperial Cutter is Thumper (only used when I want to increase my trade rank).

I still have my Sidewinder, Cobra MK III and the Viper MK IV FD game me. These I have never named. I have never used the Viper. I never used the Sidewinder after I bought the Cobra and I never used the Cobra after I bought the Vulture.
