How do you play this game with cats in the household?

Distract, or obstruct.

I was catsitting last month and the cat very much liked to jump up on my desk where I could pay attention to her.
Fortunately, I have a twin monitor setup with all my chat programs on the right hand monitor and she seemed to prefer sitting in front of that one.
Even that got annoying, so I put a spare keyboard on the desk so that it was uncomfortable to sit in that exact spot - it only moved her sitting position a couple of inches but it got her away from the screens.

Of course that didn't stop her from jumping up on the desk and headbutting my joystick hand right as I was in the middle of a 1v1. You just have to put up with it or take opportunities when there's a break in the fight to pick up the cat and put it out of the way.

It's handy to put a pillow or blanket or something in easy reach of your sitting position for this purpose. Cats are pretty sturdy, if they get in the way you can just pick them up and toss them onto a cushion, they'll be fine.

I put a basket with important looking papers on the desk, the cat seems to prefer the basket! :)
Ah, yes. Papers. The sworn enemy of cat claws. Not that it’s ever much of a fight… (unless it’s one that scares easy like one cat we had… he’d bonk himself on the head when going nuts on a toy and run off to hide, what an adorable idiot he was)

Would scattering catnip around the places where you want the cat to be, over the monitor(s)/desk, do the trick too?

One of mine is currently on my lap, while her other preferred spot is on the desk, behind my gaming laptop (which is to my left since directly in front i have a 32" 1440p monitor) - the air coming from the laptop vents will keep her warm during the winter.

She does like to come on the desk, near or in front of the keyboard, to get my attention, especially when she's hungry - but i gently shush her and she gets the point and moves to the side. If it's feeding time, this will loop till i get up and feed them.

The other cat, a tomcat actually, is keeping distance usually (they both kinda hate each other), but he will also come from time to time to demand attention, rubbing on my legs or even trying to jump in my lap - which will lead to some commotion (at least some hissing) if the lap is already taken. If it's not taken, he will settle on my lap for a petting session, but for no more than 10-15 minutes (he's not exactly a lap cat, but he just needs his 10 minutes of attention every day)

A couple of our cats, the youngest two of four, love to nestle down in my lap and especially get intrigued watching the FSS. And they also like watching TV sometimes. They are the best co-pilots and co-couch-potatoes a CMDR could ask for

But when they try to hike up your chest and get in your face, the trick is to slip the cord around their tail and the controller high!

Just got two maine coon kittens and they're wild. So how do people with kids and stuff play this unpausable game? In another game that is pauseable, I find myself pausing a lot when my girlfriend or cats do or need something.

Just some advice please.

P.S. Can you take your NPC crew on ground missions yet?
A long supercruise or carrier jump provides a decent opportunity to show some attention to relatives or other animals.
Supercruise assist can put the ship in orbit of a body if other alternatives are unavailable.
Landing on a planet or at a starport can work though occupying the medium pad at an outpost can be awkward.
If on foot a pressurised building can be used to prevent asphyxiation whilst whining is dealt with.
Scam call centres are the worst being guaranteed to call at the most critical moment.

For me, they have their own beds on top of my bed (near the computer), so when they want company, they sleep/lounge with me on the bed (the black one sometimes on my lap, when it's cold). They can see the screen from the bed, so that satisfies curiosity on what's going on. They know that the desk is out of bounds for them, so they don't climb (only the black one does rarely, and only if he REALLY wants attention, and only if I'm not at the desk). I also have some toys nearby, so sometimes I'll throw them a rattle ball or a fake mice if they want to play. It also pays to give attention to them whenever you take a quick bathroom or stretching break, even if they're not asking for it.

I don't use flight assist yet but basically when I exit warp and avoid being fried on a star, I align with my destination, up the throttle to get away from interferences and walk away to do stuff for a while. As long as you don't get interdicted or the pointer wanders off, you can fly long time afk.
Or you can get to a safe place and zero the throttle. ... watch out around rings
Have a nice day
