How do you stop players from simply blowing up other players for the hell of it?

Quick example

No combat rating, hauler carrying a few tons of Uranium. Interdicted by a player, offer them the cargo, ignores and just kills me.

Never fired a shot in the game. No rating whatsoever. Opposing player : Competent

Surely something in the game should prevent player being rewarded for this? If they get rating points towards Elite status, they're just going to hang around nav beacons and pirate every trader they see, with no fear of reputation penalties?

I get that its piracy, and I get they get the cargo, but if its already offered , and they just nuke you anyway, thats just griefing, surely?

I love player interactions, but stuff like this ruins the game. Griefing people just to ruin peoples day.. The best way if you dont want trouble is the second you see him deploy hardpoint turn around, blast your thrusters and turn flight assist off with a corkscrew pattern. should keep you from getting hit long enough to FSD out of there. And then give me his name so I can find him :)

Mostly they get penalized in that they accrue bounty and fines, unless you're in an Anarchy zone in which case you are totally open game, but in reality it probably wont have much of a negative affect on them. As far as their combat status its next to worthless to them to kill a harmless rated player in an unarmed hauler, so they aren't getting any reward other than a boost to whatever is wrong with their internal wiring that would cause a person to engage in this type of despicable behavior.

The best way to stop it is to just play in Solo or join a PvE Private Group like Mobius. If you play in Open you pretty much have to take what you get.

I get the thrill and enjoyment out of the game knowing that at any moment someone could attempt to interdict me and it becomes a fight for my life. It's part of what makes this game immersive for me.

Rather annoyingly, it also ruins 8 hours worth of in game work, and thats .... its enough to stop me playing for a few days whilst I get the whole "P*ssed off I lost an entire days worth of play" out of my head.

Honorable? no...
Griefing? well, if he follows you consistently kills you over and over... otherwise it's just someone roleplaying as an assassin. Because technically a pirate is after your booty and not your life.

Which would be fine, if the game offered assassination missions on players characters , or if killing someone was worthwhile because they had a bounty on them.

Killing them just for the sake of killing a new player, thats griefing to me.

I see there are two options

1. Play the game, learn to evade, to boost etc etc and pat yourself on back when you escape, learn when you don't. Also note that not every player interaction is going to be like that but nevertheless its part of the game

2. Play a different game, and by that I mean maybe solo or PvE group mode

Well, he did get the left over canisters... He may not know what being a pirate is though. Or, as I said, he's a psycho or playing one in-game.
One need not have a 'mission' to do things in game. The trader doesn't need a mission to buy and sell cargo. The bounty hunter doesn't require a mission to hunt pirates.
The assassin, doesn't need a mission to be a jerk. :D

Try to look at it this way. That griefer is actually helping people. Because now, whomever the griefer attacks will better their game, their combat or their quickness to boost out and jump away.
At least this is how I see life. There is really no good or bad, there's just different shades of that which just 'is'.

I get that, and I don't have a problem with the mechanics of the game or the danger of Open. I do think that putting in a pvp toggle option for people that want to play in open but not engage in combat would make the Open server a lot more populous, but overall I think the Open/Solo/Private system is pretty much perfect the way it is, everyone can find the niche that suits them. I do find this particular players type of behavior despicable because there was no gain for the killer other than just being mean, but it is what it is and I wouldn't take that away from the Open server by any means. That said its certainly not for everyone and if hes looking to avoid that then Solo or Private are his best options.

I think ill go play the solo version. As much as I enjoy the concept of an MMORPG, you're right, its not suited to me if every player interaction simply becomes a "Kill or be Killed". Its not how I want to play the game.

Start playing in single player mode? I am sure someone mentioned it already.

And that is perfectly OK...

Not every player interaction will turn into that, you just got unlucky. I got "griefed" (and I put that in quotes because, like the other guy said, unless they specifically target you and harass you over and over for hours on end its not really griefing, just playing a psycho killer) in a similar fashion within my first 15 minutes playing the game in my stock sidewinder with nothing of value, and then haven't had a negative interaction in the 30 or so hours in game since (not to say I havent been pirated, but its been "honorable" pirates insomuch as they demanded I drop the cargo they wanted, and then let me go on my merry trading way or they demanded I drop the cargo and I decided to take my chances, which of course sucks, but is also fun and thrilling in a space trucker sort of way, but not just outright murder for no reason so... luck of the draw I guess.

Why would someone who likes multiplayer in general want to play in solo mode or in a limited private group? It's really cynical to propose that to adult paying customers of an alledged multiplayer game. For that reason I proposed an Open PvE Mode for all those that like multiplayer but don't want to put up with such psychopaths and rotten kids. It's discussed here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=69757

Maybe I've just been lucky, but there have been 10 or so interdiction attempts on me and I evaded every single one just by following the escape vector.
If I do get stopped, the turrets are coming out :-D

If we're going to talk about expectations of mature players, then I'd ask why we continuously have threads started by adult players who have made the choice to play in open mode?

In open, players might kill you. That's the risk you take when you select open mode. The adult thing to do isn't to run to the forums and complain or demand changes. Instead, accept that you made a mistake in evaluating the level of risk you were prepared to live with, and then play in solo mode or one of the groups.

I trade in open. I accept that I might well lose a significant amount of my wealth. I'm also happy to fight against other players in order to defend myself. Space is dangerous.
