Newcomer / Intro How do you unlock a destination to enter super cruise?

So there I was, flying along in my shiny new B-rated Python when I was interdicted by a single MPC Vulture. I didn't feel like a fight and wasn't doing significant damage, so I figured I'd jump away. No problem, right? When I try to enter super cruise, I get the message "target obscured." It was behind a star and not being in super cruise, I wasn't going to be able to maneuver to a place where it wasn't obscured anytime soon. So I need to unlock the destination in order to be allowed to enter super cruise. Again, no problem, right? I enter the Nav menu and select "unlock." Nope. No go. The Vulture is now chewing hull. So I go back into the Nav menu a second time and try to lock another destination- ANY- destination. Nope. Still "target obscured." Must be a pretty big star to obscure the whole freaking galaxy. And kaboom, I've lost my ship. Goodbye 4mil rebuy and 2+ mil in cargo. All because I couldn't get my ship to simply enter super cruise. To ANYWHERE. I can see why people quit this game.

So, what am I missing?!

How do you get the game to allow you to enter normal super cruise in a system when a destination to somewhere else is locked in?

I know this has been discussed before. I've read a few posts and didn't find them helpful.
Thanks for any replies.

Make sure your reticule is over empty space, not a ship, planet, sun, etc. Then execute the bind for Target Ahead. This will clear the destination lock and allow you to enter supercruise. Also, there is a key bind that will allow you to FSD to supercruise even when a hyperspace destination lock is engaged. I believe it defaults to numpad divide (/) but it can be changed in options -> controls accessed from the 'pause' menu or the options menu on the main menu.

Hope this helps.

Absolutely, separate ignition for supercruise and hyperspace jump is a must. Not sure about Windows but on Mac these are not assigned to any key in the default TM HOTAS X preset.

The option to set in Controls is "Enable Frameshift Drive To Supercruise". This will enable you to aim at a blank area in space and you will go to SC, won't matter if you still have a system targeted.

Interesting!

All this time flying around and I never knew that. In situations like this, I always jump over to the nav menu and quickly select something more or less at random. Next time I'll have to give this a try. Thanks for the tip!

You can also go to the Navigation panel, highlight the targeted system and unlock the destination. Activate FSD and once you're in supercruise the destination lock will automatically reengage the system without going back to the panel. Fly in supercruise until the target system is clear of the planetary body blocking it, align with the target then activate the FSD once again for hyperspace.

It was a stupid move by FD to combine both functions to one control in the first place, when we complained we wanted it switched back the way it had originally been rather than undoing the change they added an option to do it yourself in the control options which many people never find.

If you watch many You tubers playing Elite I often see them messing around with targeting different things to get around objects so they can jump to the next system, for every good choice they make FD often seem to make two bad ones for this game.....

Well, for me, I have it mapped to numlock divide (/) and if I want to go into supercruise, I just say "Engage supercruise" and voice attack presses that button. God, I love the Voice Attack software.
