How do you usually listen to music when playing?

Xbox: Phone is plugged into the charger and volume is up at maximum.

PC: Well it's a PC. I just run two windows.

Usually I just enjoy the in-game sound, I think they did a phenomenal job. Though occasionally I load up Radio Sidewinder for other brilliant work...

Depends on what I'm doing and how involved it is. If I'm just cruising around or exploring I'll either have music going or Netflix (usually some kind of long running binge-able sitcom that I know we'll enough to be able to tune out if I need to. Both would be playing on my phone balanced precariously on my leg because I'm too cheap to buy a new laptop right now :)

Sometimes I even read if I'm in supercruise and have a lot of LS to cover. Like iconoclypse was saying, with a game like Elite it really doesn't detract from the RP element or ruin the immersion. In a way it can even add to it.

As ever with these threads---
I have a 80$ turtle beach headset. REALLY nice, even the more expensive headsets have the same kind of sound output. Only difference is the sound input. Anyways I play Pandora on my Xbox in the background. That way I can hear the game sounds and music perfectly. Adjusting the volumes to get the mix I want plus my headset has a bass boost. Sounds incredible.
---I use a Turtle Beach product as well, but the DSS2 with some Sennheiser 'phones, then if I listen to a podcast or music (usually the former) I use my Walkman.

Separate channels means full independent control over all game audio and all music/podcast audios, with EQ options on both devices. It's nice being able to power off the console and just yank the 3.5 jack from the DSS2 and plug it straight into the Walkman, keeping the exact same volume/EQ and carrying on seamlessly.

If I'm listening to a podcast or something else on the laptop, then I can also just plug that into the DSS2, as well. It's a cheap little device now, but it's hands down one of the best gaming peripherals I've ever bought. I also use my Xbox as a Blu-ray player, and so if I watch a film on my own it's awesome for that as well (or TV/YT, etc).

I have the Turtle Beach Stealth 500x headphones, and generally when I'm playing I have in-game music off, all sound effects on. The sound is incredible in this game - especially with a decent pair of surround sound headphones.

However, due to my xbox being plugged into our living room TV, I had my cable box plugged in as well. As a matter of courtesy I would have an app snapped if other people in my house wanted to watch shows or movies. Now that isn't an option so I run Pandora in the background which is alright for long journeys, trade runs, even a bit of combat on occasion, but it isn't as entertaining for the people who aren't playing.

When I'm doing something new - I turn music off, put on headphones and enjoy the full experience :)

The VLC app with background play is good for us that don't live in a region that supports Pandora.
I swear this whole mess is just MS' way of trying to force people towards Groove Music.

"Cast" is good as well if you like a podcast or 2 whilst in supercruise

Someone's finally made a background music player on the Xbone that'll access a NAS drive, so for 99p I'm finally back to (most of) the functionality that the 360 had I-don't-even-want-to-think-how-many years ago.

This is what I use. Background Music Player, I think it was $1.50 or $1.99 USD here. I hated to pay for it but oh well, it works. They give you 24 hours to demo it for free.

Don't get the free one (Simple Background Music Player) that picks a random 200 songs and those are the only ones it will ever play.

Same here. Although I did snap The Making Of The Desolation of Smaug a couple of weeks ago; but that was five hours long and I didn't want to watch a video for that long without playing Elite :D

Normally I just have the game on through headphones, with only supercruise music disabled

Wait...

The "making of" a three-hour movie which itself is one third of a nine-hour story that was adapted from a 300-page book a 10 year old can read in about four hours is FIVE HOURS LONG?

Fun fact: a three hour film of this type actually takes a bit more than five hours to make ;)

I'm an old-school MMO player, and have long been in the habit of turning ingame music way down or all the way off so I can hear the game's sounds (which is real handy listening to audio cues when someone/something is trying to sneak up on you.) One of the first things I do in almost every game I play, MMO or otherwise, is to go into settings and turn the music down to 20% at most, and sometimes all the way off. I like how Elite allows you to "cherry pick" which tracks will play, so for instance I can turn off combat music which I view as more of a distraction during a fight than a benefit.

On the rare occasions that I do have other music playing, it's usually instrumental (light jazz, classical, etc.)

As I said above, try the VLC app. You can play from USB (or network link) and supports background music... and it's free ;)

I'm not sure it's available in the US store. I'm a VLC fan on PC but I don't remember seeing it for Xbox.

Edit: Well that's bizarre... It's available, but when you click "All Apps", it doesn't show up in the list. You have to specifically search "VLC". Another classic Xbone WhatTheWhat to add to the list.

Yeah but just when I thought PJ couldn't possibly blow it up any further he surprises me.
