How does quality mode on pro compare to playing on standard PS4?

I keep eyeing a PS4 Pro as an update as sometimes the FPS on the standard seems a bit lacking: can anybody who's played on a standard PS4 tell me how the experience differs on the pro in both quality and performance modes? Worth the upgrade?

Based purely on fps? Yes.

Edit: to make it clear, it's 60 fps on performance mode compared to 30 on the normal ps4. Quality mode has 30 i believe. Whether it's worth upgrading for is entirely subjective.
I personally wouldn't upgrade just for this game, but taking into account all the other current and upcoming games for the ps4 that utilize this, it's definitely worth it.

The answer to that question is highly subjective. For Old Duck, the answer was a definitive no. For other people they have said yes.

You're over-simplifying my "No". Don't worry, no hard feelings!

OP, I actually tried the PS4 Pro for 24 hours and then returned it. If I had an old, original PS4 instead of a new Slim, the answer may well have been Yes. If I owned a 4K TV* and didn't have to worry about power consumption, the answer would have been Yes. If ED was the only game I was playing (which it was this time last year), and it wasn't the buggy mess it currently is on all platforms, the answer would likely be Yes. If I found a PS4 Pro in the dumpster for free, and it worked, the answer would be "Hell Yeah!"

That said OP, in for a penny, in for a pound - ED supposedly looks even better on the XBox One X.

* not for ED, but for all the other games I play. As it is, these other games look perfectly fine on my Slim with a 1080p display.

Yeah I don't have a big HDR TV to play on in my den, and I have a PS4 slim, so it probably isn't worth the bump to a pro. I'd get an Xbox One X if Fdev could port my whole account but I'm not willing to grind for all the rep and mats again from scratch, even with all the money from my existing account and ships etc - it's just too painful!

I see quite an improvement on my 65” 4K TV. Especially the texts are crispier and things like station interiors generally look a bit sharper. The aliasing artifacts, most prominently apparent on the toast rack, stay quite bad though. For prolonged combat situations I like to switch to Performance Mode for the smoother 60fps.

Looks bad on pro. A lot of times shadows are blocky and the antialiasing is driving me nuts.
So sad #consolediscrimination

Definitely much improved over the standard PS4 version, no idea why anyone would say it isn't a significant upgrade even at 1080p for the super sampling and increased frame rate and shadows, etc. Maybe they didn't turn on the options in the PS4 system menu? :) Other games see a massive improvement too so it's a solid choice.

With that said I also own an XB1 X and it's a step up again. I have not played elite on it however. Best place to play multiplatform titles (exclusives are decent as well), even over PC unless you have SLI titans or something as you don't have to deal with hackers and the like in multiplayer titles. Not forgetting the HDR which is something else, super impressive and I don't think that's really supported on PC? Can't wait to play RDR2 on X.

Shame FDev can only transfer credits otherwise they would have another sale from me; don't want to give up my exploration data.

I mean I'm sure it does look better on the pro than on the the og. Going by Old Duck's screens it definitely does. I also have SS on, but still, sometimes, not all times, shadows look blocky. The flickering in stations is so distracting as well. Need an update really

Sadly, even in Quality Mode it is always visually apparent in contrast to PC that the PS4 version of ED is "just" a port. The PS4 exlusive games show what the console is capable of if you know what you're doing. I would really like to see how good ED could look if the right people (see: Naught Dog, Guerilla Games) were to optimise it for the hardware.

If I could wish for one improvent only, it would be to increase the antialiasing factor.

Yeh flickering in shadows due to the pretty weak anti-aliasing solution is bad on both Performance and Quality to be honest on the Pro. I keep hoping FDev will do a graphics overhaul. As pzykozomatik says, its just a port at the end of the day.

Agreed, this one thing would get my vote too.

If ED provided 4K support on the Pro, this would go a long way to reduce antialiasing, would it not?

It does amaze me that ED lacks even simple temporal AA, which is very common on PS4 games these days (hopefully I'm using the right term).

BTW, I thought even PC gamers complain about poor AA...

Image processing in higher resolution should basically reduce the size of aliasing artifacts, but it depends. A certain grade of AA is imho still necessary. Since AA is an additional process the graphics card applies to the preprocessed 3D scene, PC users can usually set an AA level/method independently from the game as long as their card supports it and the framerate stays at a reasonable level.

Yup, a higher resolution will usually help.

I believe this is my cue to remind everyone that ED is one of the very very few PS4 games that received a "Pro patch" without any bump in resolution above 1080p. And consequently, also the only PS4 Pro game that does not run at consistent 60fps even when limited to a resolution of 1080p (when in Quality Mode, but I have my doubts about performace too in very busy situations).

For a summary of what other games get, see here.

You know what it is interesting on this list? That all that JWE gets on Pro (the only other Frontier game on PS4), is HDR support. No resolution bump, no framerate bump.

With performance mode and supersampling?

HUGE. It looks like a PC game.

Stable, lower loading times and a heck of a lot prettier.

The first thing you'll notice are the more numerable stars and clearer skyboxes but it goes on and on and on, literally every aspect of the game (Visually) improves.

Interestingly other sites claim JWE is checkerboard 4K on the Pro (which did give me some hope for Elite) although I have never seen an official statement from FDev, but, if its not, then I would not be surprised. It would then suggest the Cobra engine is just, very, very bad on PS4. DF never did an analysis on JWE as far as I am aware?
