How does the building work?

Sorry if this seems dumb, but this grid based building system is kind of tripping me up. It seems easy at first, just snap things together, but how do I rotate items? It seems I have to do it manually. Am I missing something? Do I have to build square?

I really wanted to spend the last day of the beta building, but I feel like I'm just going to spend it learning how the system works.

Press Z to rotate an item

Planet Coaster uses the same building mechanics, there are several good and quick tutorials out there that might answer all the questions you have

And yes, you can not place diagonal walls.
The grid is only square.

If you want diagonal walls, you have to seperate them from the building (make them their own building) then rotate.

Press Z to rotate 90 degrees. Hold Z to rotate according to the angle snap.

I highly recommend watching building tutorials like those from Geekism on YouTube. Really, that helped me finally beinga bit better.
