Newcomer / Intro How does this all work?

Hello all,
I just started playing ED from a friends recommendation and I'm really loving it. I just discovered EDSM about an hour or so before last nights update so I'm wondering if that might be the problem.

I'm sorry but I tried searching for about half a day and can got find a clear answer. Does EDSM automatically pull it's data from the game servers or do you HAVE to submit logs? I keep seeing something about a Discovery Github project that seems like it may or may not be required for the EDSM website to work.

So does EDSM just work once you log in with your frontier/epic account or do you have to submit logs, either via a program/plugin or manually. I've manually added logs and it has a job I completed showing as open still as well. No biggie, lots a data to import, dropped packets, whatever. But, I expected EDSM to start pulling my live data but that has not happened yet.

What am I missing?

When you say link. Do you mean log in with my frontier/epic account? Or is there a “link” process? The only stuff I found has instructions for logging in with the account, the first time I did it, it asked to link my epic and frontier accounts and I chose yes. The game works fine. I was able to purchase ARK and it went through okay so I know that’s all working.

So, it sounds like EDSM just isn’t updating for some reason. Should I try deleting my logs, or save, or whatever it’s called? I saw there was an option for that in the same place you can delete your account. Assuming that’s what that does.

No. EDSM is not part of ED or Frontier. It is a third party website. Honestly, it's been so long since I linked mine, I can't remember. Try searching the forums for EDSM PC link?

Edit: I found this in an old thread...

I think doing the following will track all your travels and visitations....

Register an account on ED Star Map (EDSM) and link it to your Frontier account. https://www.edsm.net/
Install ED Market Connector (EDMC) and launch it every time you play. http://edcodex.info/?m=tools&entry=150
Configure EDMC to update EDSM automatically.

Thanks for the search terms, I did find a bunch of info. It seems like it should just be working but I’ll give it a little more time then I’ll try EDMC. Thanks again! I really appreciate it.

Another question. If I delete my save on EDSM, that's just for EDSM, and not my save file for the actual game, correct? Because I was thinking I might try that. Maybe since I got impatient and uploaded my logs and it was trying to do it's first sync and it messed something up. I don't think EDSM could erase my game file since it's a 3rd party website, but I don't want to make a huge mistake by assuming so and being wrong.

EDSM (and EDDB) are third party sites which are completely independent of ED.
For either, you need to upload your journal file (which is stored on your PC). IIRC there is also the option to link your EDSM (EDDB) account to your FD account and let them use FDs API instead - intended as an option for console players who can't access their journals.

In practice, a lot of PC players are running one or another helper app in parallel to the game, which takes care of the uploads in (more or less) real time: EDMC or EDDiscovery.

And yes - if you think you messed up, you can delete your logs on EDSM without influence on your game in any way. You can also re-upload these logs, as they're still stored on your PC.

What? Since when?

I was umder the impression that EDSM has always required journals to be submitted either from an app (EDD or EDMC for example) or manually. Is this linking a console version?

Also - is EDSM fully back up and running after its migration?

EDIT - I see the Frontier authorisation now - so does that mean you no longer need to use EDD / EDMC ?

EDSM is up but a little bit slow. Occasional 404's.

Thank you all very much.
I went with EDMC and its been working for me. My account did get reset and I waited a while to see if it would auto update but it didn't appear so and installed EDMC.

@Tyres O'Flaherty - Is that the same Discovery you can open with the controls or is that referring to the Discovery scanner? I ask because the function doesn't seem to do anything so I'm wondering if that's a shortcut to it that they made a feature to the game since EDDiscovery seems so popular.

EDDiscovery is a completely separate tool to the game. It will interrogate your game log files and show information in a more readable way. If you allow it, it will also send your journals to Inara and EDSM which makes life very easy when checking progress on those sites.
