How far can a capital ship jump?

Is there any info on what sort of drives the capital ships in the game are using and how far they can jump?

I know Drew's site used to have a section on the history of FSD drives in Elite but after recent lore changes he removed it.

I know they use some older type of drive to rip a hole in witchspace, do they even have a limit on how far they can jump?

Even more intriguing, in some of the books ships have been able to follow through another ships hyperspace cloud, so could we perhaps be able to follow a capital ship when it jumps out?

Just thinking out loud, it's a quiet afternoon!

I've heard the witchspace thing before, but I don't really know. As far as following them through witchspace, I dunno if I would want to, lol. It doesn't sound conducive to staying alive.

It would be cool to be able to wing up with a capital ship, and jump into a combat system 200 LYs away. You could take out an objective, and then jump back with it.

I also wonder.

If I recall correctly, they use an older technology for their jumps, because current FSD tech in our ships doesn't work up past a certain hull mass?

Either way, certainly would be interesting someday to be on Naval mission, and travel with the Capitol Ship to the combat site.

In the sequels to the Original Elite you could follow another ship through 'witch space', and a full distance jump would take a week to complete (shorter jumps took proportionally less time). I completed the mission which earned me a special ship, and it had a phenomenal jump range. It was great for 'suspect' flights. Ships would track me as I launched, and then (if my destination were within their range) they would jump after me. Many was the time when I would arrive in normal space, land at my destination, complete the mission, launch, and then (when I targeted the 'incoming' cloud) see my pursuers were not due for a few days.

Sounded like a tongue twister thread..."How far can a capital ship jump if a capital ship could carry a ship full of capitals" - see how fast you can say this!

Jaques station possesses the same jump tech, by all accounts.

This. The fact that Jacques was able to make a SINGLE jump in his attempt to reach Beagle point, around 65k ly distance, and had to drop out in Eol Prou RS-T D3-94 instead, which was "only" 22k ly away, tells us that stations and other large "jump capable" structures must use a fundamentally different type of jump technology than what we have in our ships. There is also the issue the Jacques could tell there was something wrong during the jump attempt to Beagle point so it presumably took much longer than our FSD jumps in our small ships, quite possibly like a cross between an "instantaneous" short-range jumps and a sort of "jump supercruise" transit where you are moving hundreds of ly per second but still have a measurable transit time. Presumably this might set the stage for the implementation of jump gate technology where you could set up two jump gates at an origin/destination for efficient long-range travel across thousands of ly distance but I suspect FD won't implement this any time soon for fear of invalidating the entire purpose of trips to SagA, Fuel Rat runs, etc. I think that we should be expect to see FD considering implementing "micro jumps" to secondary stars in-system before they even consider implementing any type of "long-range" jump technology for players to use.
