How FD undermined their own creation

I dont agree with "first discoverer" of systems that you can plot a route to. How did that work in Beta in systems with stations? Pretty sure a populated system is discovered already...

For the rest, endurance trials for jumping are at least as legit as endurance trials for connecting dots.

The heart of this game is battle. Without it there is a museum of RNG systems.

One has to assume that when creating a galaxy with 400,000,000,000 systems FDev had some plan for using them to provide content and gameplay. It is, after all, EDs USP.

Instant action space shoot 'em ups are, however, ten a penny.

I keep seeing that number 400 billion. There are so many systems I jump to that are just a single star. How can it be a system when there's only one star? Wouldn't that just be a star?

What's the odds that with 400 billion systems we would land so often on ones that have been discovered already?

Depends where you are.
In the Bubble, pretty much 100% :D
At around 1,500 LY out, unless you're on one of the main routes to a tourist spot, then you're pretty much guaranteed to find undiscovered systems.

I actually discovered an earth like with 20 light years of Maia the other month. Looked like a first tag. I think. I didn't stop to check if I got the tag but it was yellow text and bonuses on it.

True...but the problem with this is that the user base wants more of the sim or more of the game...and neither is happy with the status quo. Thus the argument between the 'forum dads' and 'the COD kiddies'.....with both sides complaining about the failure of the programs 'potential'.
Could it be then the problem is with the way the game has been marketed?.
Take Eve...... I kind of know what type of game that is.... i knew this before ever installing and a very quick dabble confirmed it for me... it is not I game a player like me would ever want to play, I know this and so stay away. I would never dream of playing EVE and then complaining that it should have features X and Y massively reduced and feature Z expanded upon.
Just like a player who wants to play burnout would probably not choose to fire up iracing.

I would say the game which was pitched to me was very different than the one FD seem to be trying to make now.... If wanting the game to get back on track to something more akin to what - I think if we are all honest here - the majority of early backers were expecting makes me a forum dad then so be it.. guilty as charged.

I am not even saying the game is objectively bad now...... but it is certainly going in a direction which is farther away from a game i want to play and not closer to it...... 2020 may change that, who knows.
When the game launched I genuinely thought the bits missing or massively simplified (endless farming in a RES, massive ships which didnt need any crew, no real supply and demand mechanics in the BGS, no life in systems, no "live" construction and repairs, changes only happening on a server downtime.....) were just place holder to get the game out of the door, and would be built on over the following couple of years and as such I was really forgiving on the bits that i thought were weak.

however clearly i was wrong... but can anyone here say that if we were back in alpha 1 days and we were asked where Elite would be, and where it would be heading in June 2019 they would have guessed close to where we are now? .

BTW when the game launched i was time rich, but that has long passed now... i have had a child for last 3.5 years and am very time poor.... but i STILL would rather the game dial back some of the bits closer to it was at launch so it is untrue to say it is all down to people without jobs and who game too much who want to dial things back.
