How I explain only 32 players in one instance to friends is as follows:
If (according to Einstein) one where able to travel at or above the speed of light time for that person would not be the same as for those not traveling at the speed of light.
So, in ED, it's not just a matter of distance and destination, it's also a matter of time. ED tech (as I call it) has perfected faster than light travel and improved on the relatively but, even a fraction of a second can cause time differences of minutes or hours for one reaching their destination. Hence, while we all exist in the same universe we may be slightly ahead or behind other players position in time (PIT).
Example, me aand a freind jump at what we feel is the same time, she arrives an hour ahead of me (local time) and I arrive an hour later, even though, in my local time, only seconds have passed.
I further explain that jump synchronization tech is in development, it may be a bit and possibly a ship upgrade before we can jump in groups. And even if we do get the ability to jump in groups, all ships in said group must be able to start the jump sequence or be lost from the group. So, if a buddy and I are in a firefight and I start the jump sequence (grouped) and she can't because of damaged frame drive or whatever reason, I either jump and leave her behind or stick around and hope we survive. Of course one can always leave on their own if they are able.
Works for me
I do tell them I made all this up but, the relatively explanation seems to work
