How is Odyssey performance after Patch 12?

Works great for me. But u11 was fine also. It does seem a little smoother overall though. I don't play the on foot part. But all in all, good patch. btw, I have had 1 crash to desktop since updating. but that's it.

For me with 2080ti running at 4k in stations in ships nice solid 60fps
On foot in large stations 60fps in more places compared to U11, but looking in some directions lowers it 55. Seems smoother

At settlements seems smoother more places at 60fps, but facing some directions dropped to 35 to 40fps. Sentlement was empty powered down not dark totally no lights on or nps present. Cutting doors was smoother due to having solid 60, weird that pointing a certain directions still makes it drop.

There were fires in buildings, does pointing in the direction of the fire impact fps. Are fires still being drawn when I cannot see them, I mean all of them

4K in VR? With a 2080ti?

Sadly no, I honestly wish it could then it would mean the game was really well optimized but IMO you'd have better luck with Horizons for that machine and even that would be marginal.
Thanks! Thought so.
Believe it or not that PC is OK in Horizons.
TBH I even have to turn down some settings in Horizons, with my 3080 ti to keep frames at 80Hz (every other game I play at 90Hz)! And even then I have accepted stations will be ASW. :/

Your CPU is better than mine but the rest is similar. I have Ryzen 3600x but I understand there is a big difference with the Intel vs Ryzen with EDO?

After 12 updates VR in EDO is still terrible. I just played last night deleted graphics file.. set VR settings to med.. while in my ship inside the carrier 66-50fps and about 30% re-projection.. I use the same settings in Horizon and I am locked at 90fps and have a 1% re-projection.. kick it up to high 90-88fps and 1.2% re-projection. So it makes me wonder about a few things..

1. Will Fdev ever be able to match the VR performance of horizon in EDO or is this the best the cobra engine can do?
2. When they said VR development was dead did that also include performance and optimization? (and now we only get fixes)

on the second question I only came to that conclusion based on the patch notes for the last 12 updates we got..
update 12:
Fixed an issue where a black box could appear on the main menu in certain scenarios when either in or switching to VR
Fixed an issue where the introduction during the on-foot tutorial would not be correctly displayed when in VR
Fixed the offset default VR camera for the Scorpion when in the livery hangar.
Shadows would appear to detach from light sources when looking around in VR
Update 10:
Stars will no longer flash brightly in VR
Update 9:
Stars will no longer flash brightly in VR
Fixed Holo-Me character disappearing in VR when in close-up views
Update 7:
Map UI - The speed of map panning when in VR mode has been increased.
Update 6:
Fix for FSR not working with VR HMD virtual flatscreen.
Update 5:
Fixed an issue where respawning in a Conflict Zone in VR could cause a black screen for the player.
Fixed the "maintain horizon" option for SRVs not working in VR.
Update 1:
A fix has been made for the camera not resetting correctly when exiting outfitting in VR.
A fix has been made for the stereoscopic effect on ship schematics/holograms in VR - they should no longer appear as 2D.

Being that the roadmap is pretty light and vague we have only 2 more updates left this year before next years key feature overhaul (it wont be vr getting an overhaul) .. and I would love the CM team to throw the VR community a bone on this one.. Will update 13 have optimization for specific for VR?

added specs:
i7 10700k - 3080ti - 32gb ram

It is struggling to hit 60 fps for me. bounces between 35-45 fps with occasional 50-55 fps. The game isn't coming close to taxing my system it just seems like the game engine is tripping over itself. I get the same performance on Ultra settings at 4k vs low settings at 1080. So there is something bottlenecking the game.

i9-11900K
Nvidia RTX 3090
32 gb of ram

As much as I love the game, it's a shame it's so poorly optimised, regardless of version.

The fact that a reasonable cpu, released 4.5 years after the base game (3 years after Horizons) and a 3080ti still struggles in space stations and planetary settlements does say something is afoot.

I'd like to experience flying about across the new planetary tech in VR but it doesn't seems like my PC (see sig), let alone my wife's, makes the cut.

It really is a pity, because it went from pretty much being The Game everyone mentioned for VR (even though it's not by any definition "a VR game" it did VR very well) to a broken mess in Odyssey; it was actually physically tiring to play when I still had it installed because of all the visual glitches, let alone poor performance. I had high hopes for the upgraded planetary tech and lighting model an all the nice QoL improvements in the UI and all that, didn't particularly mind the on foot stuff not being in VR as long as the rest of the gameplay loop remained playable. Not that I wouldn't of had liked a "switch to screen mode" hotkey to play the on-foot segments in instead of a projection inside the VR world (mind you the game engine is capable of switching modes on the fly, so a hotkey isn't that big of an ask). But all that is moot as I ended up uninstalling Odyssey and only pop up around here after each update to see if some of the most jarring issues were fixed (and none are, after 12 updates).

it really is a pity.. Being that I own EDO I cannot take advantage of any of the new features.. no new UI.. No new SRV.. No new locales.

All because of the still terrible performance.. I gave up on full 3d VR while on foot. I just would like to take advantage of the stuff they told us we would still have

"In Odyssey, you will be able to fly down to planets, fly through atmospheres, and drive along planet surfaces in your SRV; all while remaining in VR. When disembarking your ship or SRV, you will be presented with a projected flat game screen in your VR headset in order to continue on foot"

yeah most of the rigs listed here should be running laps around EDO

12.1 and it's subsequent hotfix let's call it 12.2 have apparently fixed some of the VR spiking around bases....my motherboard failed on Friday I've one incoming till I've rebuilt my rig I can't test it !! Hehe

I'm new to the game and play exclusively on VR. I have a 3090 and play on a Reverb G2. I didn't see any noticeable improvement in performance between update 11 and update 12.

I've just gotten used to the poor performance (especially in stations). I was really looking forward to playing this game in VR with my new VR headset, but I was kinda shocked at how bad the performance and quality of the image are in VR given how old the game is. I understand though Odysessy gave it a bit of an overhaul last year in graphics...but it sounds like it really hurt performance.

It's playable though and I'm having a blast still since I find the game really fun as a noob at least. I do wish I could get better FPS and fewer reprojections, but I decided after spending days playing with settings and benchmarking I decided to just accept a lower framerate/reprojections than turning down the HMD quality and affecting text readability. I couldn't stand playing other games in VR with crystal clear text and having the ED text all blurry/aliased from turning down my steam VR resolution or HMD quality.

The on-foot flat-screen projection isn't great either, but I find it decent enough to play for now. It does feel night and day though when you kick in that 3rd-person camera and get your real VR view back. I really hope they can work out a playable solution to be able to use guns/tools in full VR.

I hope they can eventually improve VR performance or at least keep the VR support going at a minimum. If they ended up breaking/dropping VR support I'd stop playing the game entirely, unfortunately.

Weird.

I would think people would expect to be able to play Older games better using Newer hardware.
Not the other way around.

Anyway, i would expect that by next year everyone will upgrade their 6 to 9 year old potatoes to latest gen hardware (i5 gen4 was launched in 2013, gtx 1070 in 2016)
Why?
Because minimum system requirements for Starfield is GTX1060, recommended RTX2070

What are your system and game settings are you using and what fps are you getting?
I also have a G2 and 3090, and at worse (in stations) get around 50 fps, much higher everwhere else and have super clear text and image quality.
I have game settings at ultra and steam resulution at 150% (3876 x 3788) per eye.

In VR low, on my 5700xt (cpu is ryzen 3900x), my OG Vive headset nets me about 15ms/frame without changing anything from VR Low. That's in space/roid fields

Reducing the scaling even below what vr low does can get my framerate in empty space down to 11-12ms. But by this level, the text on screen starts to become unreadable. The best I can get things while still having readable text is about 12-13ms interacting with other ships. It tanks much harder near stations and I haven't bothered testing on-foot or even near surface.

Horizons is still significantly faster at better quality for these same scenes.

edit: and for those not comparing via steam vr, 15ms is roughly 66fps, 13ms is about 77fps. and 11ms is ideal at 90fps.
