How long did it take for you to get used to FA-Off?

Out of curiosity and for comparison since we have the same HOTAS, what binds do you use for your thruster inputs?
I use the stick on the back of the throttle for lateral and vertical thrusters and the rudder on the back of the throttle for forward/backward thrusters.

Overcompensating the yaw with gauss cannons when massacring Thargoid Scouts for combat rank is what finally had me install a curve for the yaw on the stick twist. For all other inputs I just use the standard linear settings.
I bet curves makes quite a large difference.

I wanna go full fa-off, but it's really hard
I personally think it's better to mix FA-On and Off than to dedicate to one or the other. I have the toggle mapped* to a convenient button on my controller, and I often switch back and forth to leverage the advantages of both. Don't misunderstand, I'm not like these YouTubers who fly mostly FA-On with a quick FA-Off to increase their turn rate. I'm mostly FA-Off with a quick FA-On to stabilize my pitch / yaw / roll.

I wish FA-Off was done like Space Engineers, where you can decouple velocity from rotation. This way I can drift FA-off but auto-stop any rotation (pitch, roll, etc). In SE, rotation is achieved using huge gyroscopes instead of thrusters. You can also "FA-Off" the gyros separate from the thrusters, giving the pilot a whole lot of options regarding how to fly the ship.

* I highly recommend turning off the COVAS voice for FA if you do this!

Yeah, see, I'm KB+M... There's only so many things my fingers can do at once (In this case, pip management, or thrust). I also don't use VA, macros[1] or anything like that.
I rarely use FA off because I use KB+M too. I've found a solution for pip management, though: I've re-mapped them to SHIFT + WASD and it's very easy to use instead of the cursor keys. If you haven't done so already, I'd really recommend this.

That's a really good idea.... OK, so I've been trying KB+M with FA off flying through the superstructure of a Coriolis Starport. Its really hard! In fact the bloody things are spinning! So you end up basically thrusting backwards to simply hold position!

It's really, really hard!

At least I didn't get wedged in place now

Are you using relative mouse for that?

That's odd, I find it easier with kb and mouse. You just need to match the spin first. This was how it was in the original Elite, pretty much (and how I originally learned to fly the Cobra).

It's the HOTAS that I find difficult with FA-OFF, because I find I can't easily cancel out movement (whereas on keyboard I can just tap the key until I have the alignment I want). Admittedly it's likely my dexterity at fault. :)

Hmm. Playing since launch, i still haven't gotten used to full FA-off. I also see absolutely no reason to go that way.

I mean, both modes have their advantages. Just as an example: go FA-off. Use your thrusters to accelerate to the side. After reaching maximum speed, use the thrusters to slow down to zero again. Watch how long it takes. Now start the same way, use your thrusters again to accelerate to the side to get maximum speed. Switch back to FA-on. Observe how long it takes to get to zero speed.

FA-off is not inherently better than FA-on. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Use them both accordingly.

It took me 3 months.

It’s been hard because I’ve spent 800 hours in Elite flying fa on only before making the switch.

To be honest I’ve yet to become fully proficient, but at least i’m doing everything fa off only.

Hardest thing for me is flying on high g planets, expecially with my T9. Landings on planetary outposts in those conditions remains a really difficult task for me.

That's cos you're only using 1 thruster. It's like FAon magically combines em all or something.
If you add in a bit of rotation and bring multiple thrusters to bear against the vector, you'll find you slow down much better :)

It's a MUST. I don't think one could master Flight assist off using absolute mouse.

Use the attached settings.

I know :)
I asked because he is a squad mate and I'm using this:

Why don't you set up curves? They're really, really helpful and it's not difficult at all.

I also use a T16000 and curves just aren't needed. When I was using the T Flight Hotas they were essential but the T16000 is pinpoint accurate in FA OFF. Word of warning to anyone looking to get one though, as with the T Flight the T16000 has a design flaw that causes random spikes in input on the twist stick axis and requires you to disassemble the grip and remove a segment of plastic to fix. Once this is done though it's an amazing stick :)

Just make sure it is something that you are chasing because you want it, not because you think you 'need' it or you don't meet some standard or other. There are several good pvpers (I like to consider myself among them) who use FA off when advnatageous and for normal flying leave it on for QoL reasons (I like flying through the infrastructure too, it's a lot more fun with FA on!!). I've learned to use it fluidly in combat, as any manual car driver would use a clutch and gear shift when needed, in order to achieve specific goals (usually extending arcs in turns, and pointing in one direction while flying in another, but these are invariably just a second or two at a time, and the rest is FA on). No FA off use at all, will lower your skill potential consideraby, but full time FA off is not required to be a competent or even excellent combat pilot.
