How long is the Alpha phase of the Beta phase?

Fair enough, that makes sense. The internet eh? Lets us communicate more than ever and misunderstand each other more than was possible without it ;)

Let me just make this perfectly and abundantly clear - I have never thought that FD have lied to me. Neither have I felt entitled and nor do I hate them. I totally understand that things change during development and schedules are flexible. If you read through my posting history I've argued these points all along, and I think that given the relatively small amount of complaining since January's beta date came and went, most other beta backers are of the same mind.

Where the disappointment and frustration comes in is seeing a sales pitch which sells alpha access off the back of a change to the premium and standard betas. A change that wasn't hinted at and was impossible to anticipate given that we've had very little idea how alpha was going or the problems it's thrown up. And it didn't help to be told that we could double our pledges to get into the beta we'd already pledged for when it first becomes available, as if this was a great deal for us.

As I said, a change was made, it was communicated terribly and it has understandably left a lot of people thinking what? Apart from being told that beta will begin when alpha is over throughout the past three months, that alpha sales pitch was the very first new information we've had regarding our beta pledge levels - and after months of patiently waiting and managing the expectations of other beta pledgers in lieu of anything coming from FD.

Another poster noted yesterday that the past three months of betas getting no information or updates has produced about the same amount of anger that a couple of quiet weeks in January created among alpha backers. If this was just about any other gaming community, the past few months would've been a ****storm of rage and recrimination.

All I'm going to say is that we deserved better than that newsletter and sales pitch.

And now you can call me entitled if you want.
Thank you Gibbonici, a completely reasonable, calm point of view.

As an aside to some of you others: could you kindly stop implying that people are throwing the toys out of the pram, whining, have deluded expectations and all the rest of it. Up to a few days ago, everybody,* including you*, would have said beta backers would be involved straight after the alpha phase. This is now not the case, so the word mangling and logical gymnastics attempting to show otherwise are a little bizarre. TL:DR - if you've nothing helpful or are just going to snipe, could you keep it to yourself this time?

In my OP (nice and polite I thought), I asked for an *ESTIMATE* of how long the alpha 'exclusive' (FD's term, not mine) would last. Not *WHEN* or exactly how long as this is obviously not practical.

EG: 'We anticipate it will be 24 hours, 3 days, one week, three weeks, etc'.

It's pretty clear I thought, and not an unreasonable request under the circumstances.

no, I think as always argument subjects get a bit crossed in the thread. I think you and I were broadly agreeing on some things and somewhere up to this point someone else felt they had been "lied" to so please excuse me if I appeared to be arguing a point which you had not made.
ZeeWolf, you were the first person to use the word 'lied' in this thread.

We all thought different things and pretty much all of us were wrong. I don't think anyone can argue there.:p

Was I? Sorry dude, maybe I was responding to post from another thread in my mind. This thread appears to be a reasonable discussion.

Ah, the term was "mis-selling" here where as I think I read a post earlier where someone was claiming they had been "lied" to so I was discussing whether that were true earlier.

These two statements from FD do seem to contradict each other:

"Pledge £100 or more: Participate in the first round private beta test."

"As we move into the Beta process, all Premium and standard Beta builds will be given exclusively to the Alpha players first."

If the Alpha testers can download the beta client first, but can't launch it until the Beta testers have also downloaded it, and we all launch together, then the integrity of that first statement is preserved. However, if the Alphas launch the beta client ahead of the Betas, then the Betas technically were miss-sold by FD.

(I'm not going to call a lawyer or anything)

Either way, it does appear to be (as has been suggested in this thread) a poorly conceived mechanism for coaxing a few more Alpha package sales.

That was me

These forums have been much more lively in the last 24 hours. All debate is healthy. The Mods have been suspiciously quiet though.

HELLO MODERATORS - enjoying the show ?

There's been a few warnings due to overzealous posts so they're definitely there.
Maybe they're following the Colon and Nobby Nobbs method of policing.

Thats a real thing ???

Sure is, very nice keyboard and has solar panels at the top so it never runs out of power. I used to have to use wireless keyboard and mouse due to my old setup so things not running out of battery were a godsend. There's nothing worse that just about to do something amazing in a game only to suddenly not be able to move due to batteries running out.

cor - solar powered keyboards! what will they think of next?

Sorry - back on topic....we've been diddled by FD etc.

Well FD today have managed to answer questions about joysticks, etc., so I think it would be *nice* to get a reply to the question in the OP. There are a fair few beta backers who aren't exactly over the moon.

If FD have 'no idea whatsoever', then that's fine as an answer.

I would imagine ASAP or "very soon" would be a realistic answer to the OP.
Of course, (like every one replying on this thread) am not privy to FD's policy and can't read minds, accurately forecast future events etc.

I'd imagine 24 hours (if no issues) sounds realistic. Credit to previous replier.

I'd also imagine premium beta players will still have access to premium beta when alpha players are forced to upgrade to standard beta (for good or bad).
At least I can't see why they wouldn't be able to. I can't see a period of "Please try again tomorrow, Alpha in session"

I also see Alpha 4 happening sooner rather than later.
I imagine 3.05 followed by 3.06 in short order, fixing known issues (mainly networking). There was a pretty quick transition from 3.03 to 3.04, I can't see why it won't continue this way and FD rattles of fixes as quickly as they can.

Of course, these are my GUESSES. Please send your rebuttals to my opinions to NUL:

There's a lot of new pieces of game that'll be working together for the first time, so I'm prepared for that "if" to be a very big one. Of course, a lot depends on what sort of condition FD are prepared to release the beta to the beta backers (that still sounds wrong) so it might not be a full alpha test before beta backers get their hands on it.

We just have to wait and see as we've been doing all along.

Of course a simple reply from someone at FD would alleviate the need for guessing. Just a rough ballpark figure please, it's not an unreasonable request I think.

In my opinion this new phase (intermediate between the alpha and beta 1) will last at least 10 days. Let us not forget that there is a commercial promotional gesture for people which subscribe to the alpha until April 25. After 10 days (or more) the backers of beta 1 will have access.
I think it will be a lot longer than ten days, a month at least.
If I had paid out a lot of money to get alpha on the 25th, I wouldn't be too happy if the cheaper premium beta came out less than two weeks later.
Also, I expect they might slow down releases a little to get the final release out just in time for Christmas to maximise sales.

A month!
There will be riots on these forums if that was the case.

I can see it in the next newsletter
"Yeah we know that everyone other than our Alpha backers have already waited up to 4 months for your pledge tier to arrive but we're going to hold it back another month just so we can eek out a few more hundred pounds from people using a shady policy of changing the goal posts and adding arguable minor balance upsetting perks. Since a large number of our zealots........I mean fans have no problem with this we'll be doing a lot more of this type of thing in the future. I know we kickstarted so we didn't have to have an evil publisher running the show but we're missing the evil so we'll pull the kind of shady stunts publishers pull instead, P.s.the rest of the newsletter will just be Upgrade to Alpha, Upgrade to Alpha over and over "
