Shame there's no Anarchist factions in the game. :(

Several freebooters are anarchist minor factions,
you can align with them, however being allied only helps,
as long as the system has a jurisdiction different from anarchy.
In anarchy the NPCs go haywire.

maybe I should have added "I have no idea" as an option to the poll. Problem is that it would be the only option that anyone would vote.
Except you don't become allied with a minor factin by accident. You have to do a fair number of missions, or trade/bounty hunt over 7 million to a station.
A decent effort at a CG will likely get you allied with the controlling faction.
.
Anyone who has sat at Tun for more than five minutes is likely to be allied to all the factions there.

Accidents, in a sense, do happen. Never done a single mission for Alliance, yet got one of their many minor factions allied. Potentially because of returning some KWS'd bounties at some point to a station of their owning or doing a trade or two while passing through their systems.

Local faction reputation doesn't decay.

It does, in that of you are hostile, you'll become unfriendly. As someone who takes some pride in the factions I'm hostile to, this is actually a real pita.

On a note of accidentally becoming allied, this is quite achievable. Black market sales will improve your reputation to the faction that controls the station, but reduces that factions influence (and cause economic bust ). Fact you gain rep for negatively affecting a faction is quite intriguing. And as others mentioned, i got allied to all major factions even though I've only ever committed to working for the empire. Fighting independent factions often can have the effect of gaining rep with all other factions.

It's easy too easy to become allied imo, and mutch harder to become hostile. Meanwhile you get rewarded for only the easier path. Something something Risk v reward

I clicked on 20-30, though I really don't know, since I mainly work with Fed/Imp/Alliance factions, rather than with Indies. The exception being those Indies that issue permits, which I'm slowly working through. I've been involved in the CGs and I suspect done enough trading with most of the CG host systems that I suspect I'm Allied with them, even when my rep with the superpower they're aligned with drops to Friendly (as it has right now, since I've been out exploring for several weeks). I know I'm Allied at Sol (with at least two of the factions there), Bast, Anlave (the Fed faction there), Cemiess, Tangaroa and Alioth (at least 3 there). I also suspect there's a few old Allies from my Rares Running days I can still call upon.

Damn. It takes a serious effort to become hostile with a faction.
FD did make it slightly harder to become allied recently. It used to be about 5 million in trade, etc, now it takes over 7 million.

just my own! does it count if i work for the opposition faction in my system so i can cause a civil war and take over there space stations? up to 3 and counting....
