I can't believe this. I was thinking the same today, just a few hours ago. 
There may be a way to do such a query, listing all populated systems and summarizing their population. I'm sure it's in the trillions (thousand billions if I'm right) in all. It would be fun to know.

Eddb.io has the data in their API. If anyone out there wishes to process the JSON data, it can certainly be done. See systems_populated.json at https://eddb.io/api

If some with the know how could code a few lines to parse the Population.json on IMDB to read the population entry for around 22,500+ systems, then give a total value then you'd have an answer.
Or someone very, very dedicated with far too much time on their hands & a calculator, would also yield the same result.

Your number is 383,604 less than Factabulous' so that must be the number of NPCs killed between the time of each of your calculations. Hmm...seems a little low.

Interesting, I wonder what would cause that number to change over time? I doubt the BGS is simulating NPC births and deaths, maybe a question for Dav.
populations drop during war and famine states
populations increase during boom
i have never been sure if these are changes due to births and deaths - in which case these are cahnges to overall galaxy populations - or they are simply people moving between systems.
