In the title. How many of you have friends to whom you are not recommending the game to because you know that unless there are better social tools for them to interact with you and other players, the game will not hold their interest?

People seem to forget that social tools help players create their own content, and that's what this game is all about.

I have some friends who I have recommend the game to while it was in beta, and they decided to wait until release to see how the game turns out.

I'm glad they did because I would feel a bit guilty the way the multiplayer is currently implemented. Its hard work, hopefully when the "wing" update arrives next year things will improve.

In game chat is horrible to use, don't know how many times I've chatted to the wrong commander, and the voice comms aren't worth the bother either. Just set up a mumble server, or vent or teamspeak or whatever.

None, since it's a non-issue. People in my guild use teamspeak, and real life friends who are not in the guild use Skype. :)

.... Voice chat not withstanding, everyone uses a third party VOIP in almost every game. Let's focus on things like instancing, trading, sharing of accomplishments, etc....

My friends are all loners. Even if we could play together we'd play in a private group (group solo mode LOL).

Plus they're all pretty opinionated, so they'll buy ED when they're good and ready, not because of any "multiplayer" or "social" functions.

Personally I've only recommended ED to friends whom I know are space sim nuts (and they've ALL already bought it in beta/gamma). Any new friends I "convert" now are purely passive - they see me play, they see my screenshots and videos on Steam, they decide to buy it.

Yeah, some of my friends i've told not to purchase until we see there is a good grouping. Sure, we all use skype and stuff, who doesn't? I use that in all the games I play. But if we can't share bounties, missions, trading... then why should they bother lmao

I've had 3 friends interested in the game, all wanted assurances it wasn't going to be too MMO-y,one of them is absolutely definitely not playing open at all.

Incidentally one of them is a diehard WoW player who used to be in one of the worlds best guilds, even he didn't want it too MMO-y. But then he had played Frontier when he was a kid I think, so he has warm memories.

Which are still a non-issue for the people I play with;

• Our private group has had minimal to no problems since release
• Flying as group: Simple communication and flight skills
• Helping when interdicted: Use low energy FSD wake
• Sharing bounties: Simple communication, ie. "next kill is yours"
• Trading cargo: Use the "abandon cargo" function
• "Paying" friends: Use the "abandon cargo" function and give him x canisters of palladium

Everyone I've shown the game wants it, regardless. You can communicate regardless, even across game modes. Though, I'm pretty sure they'd also agree that if we wanted to play together, it should work. It doesn't work 100%.

The social tools don't affect me nor my friends (3rd party VOIP anyhow, which is about standard these days)...

But communicating with strangers would be a whole lot easier if the Comms got a fix.

"it's easy to play together, you just do everything manually instead of it being implemented as a normal game feature like any co op game in 2014"

Yeah... I'm going to keep telling my friends to not purchase until we DON'T have to do all that asinine to play properly together

Out of my friends I have two that have bought the game but are waiting for wings before they're going to play it. The rest are just getting stuck in but have almost all been playing solo.

vent.
teamspeak.

i fail to understand the problem

Well let's see.... I'll start with basic functions that I used to use playing MUDs in 1994 that don't exist in ED 20 years later.

A trade function that swaps item(s)/currency A for item(s)/currency B without jumping through a bunch of arbitrary hoops or using other game mechanics to ad-hoc it.

Persistent written communication. For some reason Email doesn't exist in ED and this perturbs me. Being able to leave a note to my friends that while they were offline Such and Such happened, and so on was going on and Ishmael was there is just a basic tool. No, their out of game email isn't sufficient either.

Grouping, or in ED: Wings. This is such a fundamental mechanic it should've never been delayed until after release. Ever.

Proper instancing in OPEN PLAY. Some of us consider private groups with your friends some of the most mindless gameplay imaginable. Instancing with friends in open play needs to be fixed.

Sharing rewards should not require taking turns, jettisoning cargo or any other arbitrary means of transferal. It should also share faction rewards and penalties. If my friend assists me in a conflict zone for missions that I picked up in the station and they didn't, they should get the same faction bonuses and penalties that I do.

There are many, many more simple and fundamental things that are essential for making cooperative play a reasonably rewarding experience instead of an obnoxious chore. And like I said, none of this is new, it's not something that pampered kids playing WoW have learned to take for granted. These basic functions have been in online games for over two decades and they are there for a reason.

@ Windscreen Smudge I agree with this totally.

As a new player I'm still not familiar with ALL of the communications in game. I did however come across a Pirate that wanted to actually speak to me through voice comms which was rather cool but I want to be able to speak I sector, in station and whisper in game to people without having to target them. Maybe this is something that i'm actually able to do but just not sure with the controls (unfamiliar still) but it seems to be missing. Being on a team and going through Team Speak is fine if it's your group but what about the odd player that's being attacked or needs help in game some how? I find it very difficult just asking questions to random people to get a better understanding of the game in general and that's the socializing part that I think we're all missing here.

So you are still playing, but your friends blindly follow your orders not to play the game. And of course, the will never buy the game until you, who has the game and plays it, gives them approval to buy. Because after all, you, an owner and player of the game, disapproves of game to your friends.

Man good lookin out for your "friends".......you know what's best for them.

None. Sounds like the OP is finding another way to rehash the "social tools" whine again. If you want social tools in a game, Facebook has millions.
