Newcomer / Intro How many players can play together in ED at the same time? (online mode)

Hi i'm relatively new to ED!
I have a question, how many players can play together in ED in online mode? In Dual Universe, for example, there can be several thousand. According to Steam, the average number of players in ED is about 3700 players per day. With how many players can you play at the same time?

Greetings

All modes of Elite are online, Open is probably what you mean which limits you to unblocked players on the same platform as yourself, Private Group limits you to the other invited members of that group again on the same platform, Solo is just you however it is still online and all the modes play in the one galaxy so even if you can't meet them you can affect the game for other players.

It varies depending on how good your connection is but probably no more than 50.

As a significant percentage of players are not connecting via Steam their stats are not to be trusted.

We're all online, all the time. You can potentially connect with anyone who's online at the same time as you.

There can be problems if your connection is bad, or theirs is, and location makes some difference too.

ED is not a server-based game. There are servers that hold persistent data, but connections between players is peer-to-peer.

... but to reach these 50 requires some luck and patience, a somewhat larger pool of candidates and possibly someone at the server room cuddling the hamsters.

Yes, ED has no central server hosting the instances, but they still have a distributed server network (Amazon AWS) for managing those instances.

So does that mean you could have a battle in ED with several thousand players if it's hardware-wise possible?

Why does CCP manage that in EVE, Novaquark in Dual Universe, but Frontier doesn't manage that in ED?

Online at the same time, yes - in the same instance, no.

EVE is client / server - and dilates time when things get "busy". E: D is not - it relies on P2P connections for data transfer between player clients.

1) Probably not
2) FD chose a different technology

Depends on the slowest connection speed of the group of people playing together.

If one person as a slow connection the numbers will be much less

You can have a Wing (group) of up to 4 people together at one time, but we (BWC) have often "sync dropped" multiple Wings into a single instance of content, such as a CZ or RES site, fairly successfully, putting 12 or more of us in together in seperate Wings.

Similarly, you can have anyone from anywhere in the Galaxy join you in your ship for some multi-crew work via "telepresence" if you have a ship kitted for it (Such as having a Fighter Bay, or turreted weapons), though you cannot join a Wing and do multi-crew at the same time.

Generally speaking, if playing in Open, you're unlikely to run across more than 1-2 real players at any given time unless you're specifically linking up with them / all playing in open for a special event like a Community Goal.
