How many VR users are there in Elite Dangerous?

Add me to the list. Could never go back to a monitor, don't care how high the resolution is. My buddy just picked up Ed, and has a gorgeous 58" 4k tv, but playing Ed on it is like watching paint dry, boring. He even admits its just not the same.

bought the first vive then when the new one came out, bought it and fly 99.9% of the time with the headset on. VR is absolutely fantastic in this game .... there is no other way to fly!!!

Had mine up and running for 6 months now (Rift).

makes it really hard to go back to standard.

i only wish they'd do something about the galaxy map, as its a pita to select the system you want..

Set the galaxy grid on (one of the options in the rightmost menu item when the Galaxy map is open.

Then tilt the map slightly and you will see line from a star joined to a blue disk. You can select the disk.

Thats the method I use and is about a million* times easier than trying to find a star by any other method.

*might be exagerated by a tiny bit :D

VR User here, Samsung Odyssey, though i have a deep suspicion Fdev have not tested Odyssey (Higher resolution headset) nor are they developing for VR in mind, Still no On Screen Keyboard, Galmap is useless, cant respond in chat, cant change HUD colour
In game etc, etc, etc.

Oh and CPU bottle neck issues i only get in elite....

Not yet, but I plan to join the ED VR ranks as soon as my Pimax 8K arrives.

Hi
check the reviews - (i am sure you are but just in case!!) There are a lot of folk reporting that the pimax 5K+ may actually be the better headset for most people, and pimax are allowing people to swap their pre-orders if you think you may feel that way too.

Both models receive 1440p from the PC, meaning the 8K has to upscale. Less screendoor effect but res isn't that much of an improvement. What puts me off these is the distortion which can appear if the profile is wonky.

Yeah and by the reviews.
Having to render at about 2160p or so.
Downsample to 1440p, feed to the hmd so the scaler chip can upscale it back to 2160p honestly sound a bit moronic.

And having to do so means we would expect a 1080ti with the 8k, perform albeit at a higher resolution and fov about the same settings and fps as I would expect running a cv1 off a 1060.

As far as I have been concerned.
Frame rate is more important than a minor bump in clarity.
Hence why I usually don't even bother with supersampling at all with the cv1.

Quite frankly native 4k VR isn't really feasible until we have cards twice as potent as the 2080ti.
That's why I'm not buying one either.
Spending $1300 on something that still isn't enough performance seems equally bonkers.

FD wouldn’t pull VR support would they? Some people are speculating, but I would just be mortified! EDVR has been my hobby for the past five years!

God I hope not. Don't think I could go back to 2D.

I tilt the map so that I'm looking directly down from above (up from below works as well). I find this even easier.
In the system map, have the mouse pointer near the centre of your view. Navigate and zoom until you have your target close to the pointer, then move your head to line them up rather than moving the mouse. I find this more reliable.

Judging by the SweViver video I prefer the look of the Pimax 5K+, but I won't buy one until I can try one for myself. It's true that the distortion around the binocular overlap may not be too pronounced, but I'm not in too much of a hurry at the moment to upgrade my CV1 as it plays Elite well enough. I can wait.

I'm just glad there are newer better headsets coming on to the market.

VR also. On oculus. i7 6700K (OC 4.3ghz, core parking off), GTX1070, SS x1.0, HMD x1.5. With some tricks in the graphicsconfiguration.xml, it's very clear and it works like a charm.

It's just impossible to back on a flat screen for me.

Hi all

I was tempted to turn this into a roll call thread and that might be still be a good use, but I have been wondering since Expo 2017 how many VR users are there in Elite?

I'm certainly not expecting there to be a majority, but one surprising thing at the Expo was that at least half, if not more, of the people I spoke to had either the Rift or Vive, not including those who intended to get an HMD.

I wonder if FDev have stats on this from the game telemetry, because I suspect its more than an edge case population...

I'm one, wouldn't be playing anymore less I'd found vr in my local second hand shop!

I started flat but joined the VR club last year. Elite is pretty much the only game I play. Period. I've lost interest in gaming over the years, so Elite was the first to bring me back to it. While I am slowing down a bit, the VR experience is still quite fun. And, I'm waiting patiently for Space Legs and Biospheres when VR will become totally awesome. :)

Here's to hoping...

As to other VR games, there's a few that catch my interest, but none strong enough to actually make me try them.

late to the roll call - started flat on xbox, went to VR on PC in Jan. I'm pretty much in the same boat as EDannII. The talk of FD dropping VR in this forum makes my stomach churn!

Don't worry, they will never drop it. If anything VR is ramping up to a next generation of goodness, and ED will not want to be left behind given how it's already such a go-to game for VR players.

First you have the Pimax being released - and a 200 degree FOV is going to be a game changer for many

You have eye tracking being developed, which will reduce the graphical processing requirements (in real life we only see at full rez for a very small area, everything else is low rez), meaning more systems will be able to handle better graphics.

Full wireless VR is on the horizon - the moment you can get rid of those wires it becomes more portable and convenient, increasing the number of people who will actually use it.

You have Sony establishing a patent for the PSVR2, which seems to be making use of that eye tracking tech (along with sensors that will help combat motion sickness) and possibly even be wireless. The fact that Sony is pushing forward on VR is a huge thing, and if it uses eye tracking to reduce graphical processing strain, it will most likely still be compatible with the PS4 even when the PS5 comes out - meaning an increase in possible adopters of the tech.

VR is only going to go up from here

It's a classic "mountain out of a mole hill thing" Braben never said anything further than "We had VR support very early and it's great, but It's not a mainstream device yet".
There is certainly no comment that remotely becomes "he's going to remove VR from Elite", he's simply just not a fan.
And it was a tiny part of the article, that had a larger part of it discussing the "respective nature of handling an IP, in short Jurrasic World".

VR in general is actually getting more traction than I first thought, and even though Braben might be stuck in a 2015 impression of VR someone at FD probably isn't.

Read an article the other day that said VR sets sold as many HMD's as smart phones did in it's first generation., and those gen 1 iphones, and VR has even more potential.

And frankly most of his complaints are solved by the upcoming Pimax 8k\5k+ alone.
As for being anti social, well I suggest attending a Beat Saber party at one point or another if he can.

Its not really any more anti-social than headphones are.

right now, gamers who otherwise could have been considering a three screen or such setup is going VR or at least considering it, in fact VR is significantly cheaper than a trippel screen setup and already works a thousand times better.
