How to avoid ALL PVP in game?

Hi, all.

I realize I'll probably take some heat for this, but whatever - what's done is done. :)

I'm someone who as a regular matter of course does not play online multiplayer games. I just don't like the environment, from the standpoint of PVP situations. I enjoy playing where I don't have to worry about some "hotshot" other player(s) who thinks it's great fun to attack other players. Please understand, I am NOT knocking that practice - there are loads of people who enjoy PVP; I get that, and it's perfectly valid.

So anyone reading this is probably now thinking, "Well, why did you buy this game, you big dummy?" :) Well, I was intrigued by the idea of space travel/exploration and the constantly evolving universe with the changing faction politics, etc. I also have some really fond memories of way too much time spent in the original Elite all those years ago. So: A combination of intrigue and nostalgia. ;)

At first, the universe wasn't as populated as it is now, and I was pretty much able to keep to myself. I'd do cargo runs to save money to get a better ship & equipment - what I wanted ultimately was to be able to go to the far reaches of this universe, see new sites, scan new systems, etc. - I want(ed) to explore. I don't mind friendly interactions with other players, but I'm just not about fighting them.

So I had been doing cargo runs - which in and of themselves I view as tedious and boring, but a necessary evil towards my goal of getting the kind of equipment that would allow me to do what I really wanted to do here - explore the "galaxy" that's been created. And with the upcoming expansion that I've seen advertised that will allow planetary landings, that's even more exciting.

Problem is, the last time I played the game, I was on one of those cargo runs, when on final approach to my destination for cargo offload, I got pulled out of jumpdrive by another player, who wanted me to drop cargo. Didn't want to do that, since it would kill the mission I had accepted. I barely managed to escape, got back into jumpdrive, and got pulled out a second time by the same player. Managed to get away a second time, and either I succeeded in ditching him or he figured out I just really wasn't interested and it wasn't worth his time. Don't know, don't care. ;) I finally made it to my destination, offloaded my cargo, logged out, and I haven't been back in game since. That was a month and a half ago.

It left such a bad taste in my mouth that thinking about returning to the game made me feel dread rather than excitement. I finally uninstalled the game the other day (though Steam always allows a reinstall) since I realized that I'm not likely to be back. I've played to long to qualify for a Steam refund. So that's $60 down the drain. Live and learn, I guess - no matter how much nostalgia I feel for something else that comes along in an online multiplayer format, I'm going to steadfastly ignore it. :)

However, I'm hoping to avoid a total write-off of this game, which is why I registered here to post this. I don't know if there are options by which I can play in this online world and avoid the whole PVP situation. I don't know if, or how closely, the devs read these forum messages, but in case they do - having some kind of a "no PVP" switch that we can set would be AWESOME! :D lol

I'm not expecting to get a lot of sympathy for the idiot who bought an online multiplayer game when he normally doesn't play them. But I figure there's no harm in posting here about this - there might be a way to do what I'm wanting to do that I didn't know about, so I'm hoping that if there is such a way, someone will tell me about it. And if not, I'll just chalk it up to experience, consider it a $60 learning experience, and remember it the next time someone posts a nostalgia-inducing game that has gone multiplayer online.

Thanks in advance to anyone posting a constructive reply. :D

I can only repeat it: Mobius is yours. Over 10000 likeminded CMDRs are there already, the number steadily growing. The only possible PvP occurence there is in combat zones.

You have your winning answers here. Mobius (other good groups are available, heck even make your own and invite your friends there!) or Solo mode.

You'll be enjoying Elite in no time.... Hopefully. :)

As scary as it can be, what with the risk of losing however many credits it takes to repurchase your ship, the value of your cargo and the time spent since your last docking, I feel that the threat of danger makes one feel more... alive I have no interest in pvp, likely you. I forayed into bounty hunting a bit but never sought other players, just the NPCs.

But the constant risk that there might be someone tailing me or waiting for me, even 55kly out from SOL, adds an amount of... I don't know how to explain it, really. It's a genuine feeling. Like I could never hope for there not to be dangers if I were to be in the same position in real life.

Solo is definitely the way to go, though, if only to escape the griefers, the killjoys and those who perform legitimate piracy. Unless you delve into exploration outside of the bubble, though, you still run the risk of NPC interdiction.

And one day we'll be able to explore the insides of ships, stations, all planets and so much more. The reasons and places to escape violence will only increase then.

I've been in Mobius for over 6 months now, and unless you wish to go into a conflict zone, there is no PVP, and all members respect that ruling.. Having a blast!

In case the OP is wondering, all three modes (Solo, Group, and Open) share the same galaxy/background sim.

Wow - every reply was helpful and understanding-sounding. Elite Dangerous has the best players in the world! :D :D :D

A couple of questions, please: First, in solo mode, do the changes that they put in place for the open world game (factions/powers, planetary landings when that happens, etc.) take place in the solo game as well? And second, I like the idea of still being able to play in the online world but have a way of avoiding the whole PVP thing. :) How does one go about joining this Mobius group that has been mentioned?

Thanks again!

See above, and see here for Mobius.
Yeah, so I saw after I posted my first reply. :D Thanks for that bit of info - I feel new hope for this game. I'll go check out Mobius; it sounds like it will give me the best of both worlds - being able to interact in a friendly way with other players and possibly even being able to ally with others for a NPC Pirate raid (lol), and still being able to explore the galaxy without worrying about someone jumping me.

You guys are the best! Thanks much!

As many have already said Mobius is a PVE group, with the option of PVP in combat zones only, with 11,000 players that want to play the same way you do, read the first couple of posts, they explain the rules. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=38362&highlight=mobius.

If you are getting bored of trading find a res with pirates in it and bounty hunt for a bit of a break if you have a ship for it.

The OP here is the proof that we need an open PVE mode in the menu if ever I saw it.

Solo is exactly the same as Open, just minus the other players. Everything you do in Solo affects Open, just without direct interaction with other commanders.

constructive reply. :D

In this game it is very easy mate. You can always play in Open Play and be almost untouchable.
Solo/Group is not a solution for You. This is a crop from a real game, the shadow from that what Elite is. You can meet many cool people around the galaxy. People who want to attack you are very small percentage of player base, and it is very easy to deal with them without any fight and losses.

One thing you need to do is read this tutorial:
