how to avoid scans when entering ports.

I haven't played in a while and just picked the game back up three days ago. It used to be that when you got through the mail slot you were fine and all scans would cease but now even when I go into silent running I notice myself still getting scanned which is a pain even when I make it through the mail slot is this a glitch or am I taking to long to make it through the mail slot? It stinks when I have a load of passengers who want to be secretive and then suddenly end up failing all those missions.

Silent Running is no longer enough--- shut down as much as you can--- get permission to dock at 7-5km boost through mail slot
-- stop -- turn on what is needed and land
You can if needed use docking computer once you are in--- can make life easier

I just make a beeline for the slot. By the time security even sees me, I'm in. Just fly up/down a bit to break LoS. If they can see you inside they'll carry on the scan.

I do the same thing in my Annie. I've get a few recordings on mine too. The closest I'll boost into a station, if I'm trying not to hit a wall, is 4km out. Anything closer, I throw 4 pips to sys and let station control know to close their coffee cups.
Also practice your approach, dont panic when you near the back of the station, and remember pip management. Speed and approach to the station are all you need to get in with no scans.

I use Silent Running on my Cobra all the time. Seems to work, but then I fly it in quite fast too.

I always very calmly ask permission to dock, align myself with the mailslot and I get in below the speed limit, always works :D
Silent running? Is that a thing?

Always. I'll flip around and use my main thrusters to brake if I need to. I practice with every ship I own. OP is the one looking for advice.

Check scanner, request permission, chaff on approach, then a heatsink before the chaff runs out (or fit dual chaff and spam it all the way), enter slot at <100 MPS.
Boosting through the slot risks destruction by the station in the event of a collision fatal to the other ship.
Boosting through the slot with Silent Running risks destruction from the collision itself.

Line up with the slot while you're still beyond 7.5.

Boost towards station, while hovering over 'request dock' option.

Hit it once it gets within the 7.5 range.

Don't hit anything.

No need for SR.

I am wondering if you are just engaging Silent-Running (SR) and driving to the slot or are you doing anything else to mitigate your heat-signature such as shutting down systems or using heat-sinks?

When I want to avoid being scanned I:
Immediately on exiting supercruise (SC) near a station I deploy a heat-sink and engage SR as I boost toward the mail-slot. Speed is key. Once inside a station all scans end. A scan takes seven (7) seconds and so when you get a "Scan Detected" warning, if you can throttle up and get your ship completely thru the mail-slot in under 7 seconds then the scan does not complete and your ship does not get scanned.
Delay asking for docking clearance as long as possible. It is useless to hide and then to yell "HERE I AM!" so delay your request for docking clearance until you are fairly close (<10 seconds) to the mail-slot.
Entering the station via the mail-slot immediately disengage SR so your shields will re-initialize. Just landing without shields can very easily cause damage to your ship.
Remember, speed is key. Time is money. [money] o7

Watch your temperature! Heat builds pretty quickly in SR so watch your heat buildup and deploy heat-sinks as necessary to keep your ship COLD until you enter the station! You can deploy heat-sinks in SR.

thanks for all the replies I figure I was just taking too long to get through because today I took a bunch of passenger missions in my beluga and I found out that if you just go through the mail slot without silent running at a reasonably high speed you will not get scanned of course the beluga is big so it sucks when you clip an edge and your passengers get y with you .

During my brief career running passenger mission in my 'annie I only had issues getting out, not in with regards to scanning. Saw the rebuy screen a few times for that one, but it was still a very profitable gig while it lasted! I found that exiting the slot I'd hit the door es line of sight much easier than on the way in for some reason- had many butt cheek clenching escapes with my criminal buddies on board!

I don't think so I mean as long as you make it in before the scan is complete you should be fine. The scan takes around 10 seconds I think
