How to choose a faction ?

I haven't had time to study factions in Elite thoroughly.
To my knowledge there's Alliance, Empire and Federation ?
What are the crucial differences between them and how will choosing one affect me ?
Actually, I don't even know which one to choose. Do I even need to do that ?
Sorry for noobish questions.

You don't have to choose. When Beta 2 will arrive, you will get rankings and reputation too. Idea is - more good things you do for one side, more that side will view you favorably. And vice versa. So it's up to you to choose which side suits for your own goals - and then...errr...make them happy with doing missions :)

At this point in combat zones you are free to choose everytime you arrive, without consequences. So either money or believe, pick and choose.

You are not obliged to choose a faction. Your behavior for a faction, will define the importance of your commitment. No need to sign a contract

Seems logical.
But, how do I choose who to help out ?

You travel to their territory, and help out with anything you find there. The more you help, the better!

( Well, in the final product. We have some limited space at the moment. )

:D Thanks but I know that.
I meant, how do I decide which side to help out.

Go for the Empire. Why? Because we really value humans above all the rest. We have more job opportunities in our big ships than the Federation or the Alliance, because we would not let robots steal your money. That, and we have really cool looking ships in the first place!

( At least when they are made. We have to wait a bit longer... ;) )

He also has invaluable chance to become a slave

:D

The Empire has a system of slavery, based on a contract of service if someone gets broke. I am sure people would like to dramatise that fact, but it is like a social security network, and you can get back on your feet again afterwards, so it is not so bad as it sounds. The other systems just put you in jail or something. That's not a good way to get around, see the universe, and experience exotic new... er... mines? :)

Eranin is ran by true anti-capitalist commies (nevermind they are trading with dirty capitalist systems, but let that slide), with 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' attitude from Empire who bankroll their lifestyle. If you are trader they might not be your best friend. However, if you are against regulations you might want to stick with Fed enemies.

There can be other layers - like believing propaganda, and stuff - so it is entirely up to you. Or you can be just a player calculating stuff and then it boils down to how much each side pays for a kill.

It is the thought that counts! One third of the Imperial fleet is made up of slaves, to my knowledge. That's one way to get around! ;)

Take a look at this stuff from Elite II: Navies of 3200
