How to configure joystick curves for dummies?

Hello all. I use a Thrustmaster t16000 HOTAS and I've been trying to configure curves with TARGET software, but I failed everytime. I downloaded a profile for Elite from Thrustmaster website and it works fine, but I can't remap the bindings in game because it seems to use some kind of different keyboard layout so I end up overwriting stuff when changing binds, so I think I have to create a brand new profile but I simply fail to understand how the software works. lol

Any help is appreciated.

My personal opinion - TARGET software is terrible. I tired to use it with my T16000m & FWCS but found it clunky and overly complicated.

Before my T16000m setup I had the HOTAS-X and in an effort to get a better response out of it I came across vJoy (Joystic Curves). This worked well and I continued to use it with my T16000m to damp the yaw response on some of the more agile ships.

The youtube vid is a pretty good tutorial on setting it up and the second link is to the software. The only problem is that the Windows 10 "enhanced" security can make it a little troublesome to download.

Thats exactly my problem, I find it very difficult to aim after heavy turning when using an agile ship on Faoff and with fixed weapons. I'd like to have more fine aiming on the center zone of the joystick after turning.

Thanks for the links, I will give it a try asap.

It sounds like you may only need to setup the yaw axis on vJoy, which is what i have done.

This is all I have at present to moderate the yaw when I use agile ships with weapons like Rail Guns.

I was about to post exactly the same thing. Really happy with Joystick Curves (in fact, from the title, I thought that's what this thread was going to be about).

I've been using target for years now without any problem. Don't know whats supposed to be so complicated with it, its straight forward imho.
Just keep in mind, that when you start target all thrustmaster devices are merged into a virtual 'ThrustmasterCombined' device. A mystical joystick with 10 axes and 30 buttons. You have to change the key/axis binding in ed to this virtual joystick.
If you do it over the script its something like 3 lines. I'm in the office right now so i cant post an example, maybe in the evening.

You can do a lot of awsome things with target script, especially since the t16000 is a bit low on buttons. E.G. You can define differend actions for long/short klick, button combinations. You can create button klicks from an axis or vice versa.

I recently lost my C: drive and I didn't have my Joystick Curves profile backed up. When I reinstalled Joystick Curves I could not get it to use my joystick and throttle at the same time. It would recognize either one, but not together. So I had to go through the frustration of running the TARGET software. As far as the USB key number goes I think this is because it is universal and not slaved to any particular language. One of the nice things is that you've got a lot more "F" keys than the average keyboard so you've now got unused keys because anything above F12 won't be used. It works out well for me because I 10 keyless keyboard without the number pad and with the TARGET software I gain those back so to speak. I'm out of town and I'm doing this largely from memory so bear with me and maybe I can get you headed in the right direction.

I assume that you followed the instructions found in the How to load the Target profile for Elite Dagnerous.pdf and are familiar with that. One quick tip before I begin, I had no issues stopping, then editing the FCS Hotas Elite Dangerous.fcf profile and then running the profile again while in game as long as I wasn't trying to actively fly the ship. This will be handy once you start working with the curves as it helps you tweak them in to precisely what you want. When you run the profile again, make sure it says “main returned 0” before attempting to fly in Elite.

I wouldn't attempt to do anything with the curves until I got the key binds where you want them. The good news is that the curves are easy to do and once you get the hang of it the curves you can make in TARGET are very versatile and you can get better results with them than you can Joystick Curves.

I would start by removing all of the key binds in the ED configuration screen that you don't use or are not what you want them to be. Now that that is done start binding the buttons the way you want them. If you noticed, the ED configure file doesn't see the USB number, it sees the letter that it represents. You don't have to go back and change anything in the TARGET software. When you hit a duplicate key bind it will tell you what key bind is duplicated so just go and unbind that key and either leave it empty or bind the desired button in its place. All of the buttons that are used will be a unique key from the TARGET keyboard so literally all you have to do is just re-bind as usual. For instance, if you want to use the top hat switch on the throttle for the SLF functions instead of the wingman functions all you need to do is unbind the current functions go to the section you want and start binding.

If you run across a button that isn’t bound leave that until you have all of the rest of the buttons doing what you want them to do and then go into the TARGET software, stop the profile, edit the profile, go to the Event screen and add a new EVENT. Follow the guide in the user manual located in chapter 7. You will see all of the events and I don't usually remove any of these but I might rename them to the new use of a button if you want to.

Now that you have the buttons bound the way you want them to and it’s time to set a curve. Once you’ve done one you will understand how to do all of them. Go to the manual and look for “Configure axes response” and it will explain what you need to know. Play around with it and you will soon start to understand how it works. Do on axis only until you get the hang of it and then add in the rest until you get them where you want them. If you have any questions I’ll try to help but I’m on a job out here and it may take a while to respond.

I gave up on TARGET and use Jstick curves software because FDEV are lazy and wont implement it in the game like Star Citizen have !

Talking of Joystick Curves backup ... does anyone happen to know where joystick curves stores its profiles? Wanted to double check that I was backing up my own but I'm damned if I can find out where they are.

Just FYI another good alternative to Joystick Curves or TARGET is Joystick Gremlin.

I just had a look at that and it also relies on vjoy, anyone know of a vjoy equivalent that doesn't make windows10 and antivirus software start twitching ?.

How much does it cost [money].

I've downloaded vJoy twice. If I leave my PC on then the software is stable, but after it's been switched off I try to boot the software and it fails to launch. Reinstalled, used, restarted and it did it again. X52pro and Win 10.

Would anyone know why it's doing this?

You can define in the program where You save profiles, some export function IIRC.

I hope you don't mind me bringing an old response up. I would like to set curves for my T1600m (also be able to do pip management - but one thing at a time). Am I to understand that to set curves you have to start with an 'empty' joystick and then re-map every current button you use, eg landing gear, boost etc.? - This may sound like a simple question but I don't actually know. If this is the case - do you set curves - then select the virtual joystick in Elite and then go through every setting and choose your joystick corresponding button?
Thank you if you reply.
