How to configure joystick curves for dummies?

I hope you don't mind me bringing an old response up. I would like to set curves for my T1600m (also be able to do pip management - but one thing at a time). Am I to understand that to set curves you have to start with an 'empty' joystick and then re-map every current button you use, eg landing gear, boost etc.? - This may sound like a simple question but I don't actually know. If this is the case - do you set curves - then select the virtual joystick in Elite and then go through every setting and choose your joystick corresponding button?
Thank you if you reply.

No!

vJoy is only used to modify jstick axis.

For me the only output it gives is for yaw. You set up each axis seperately and it doesn’t effect any actual jstick axis unless you choose it to.

The tutorial is good.

If you want to programme macro’s to key and button presses use voice attack.

VA doesn’t need a voice command and can simply execute complex commands from key or button presses.

If you want to use TARGET then yes, thats the way to do it. Target can also handel the pip-managment.
It doesn't matter when you set the curves, you can start with a non-modified version. Just remeber that after starting target the devices-name is changed (from T16000 to ThrustmasterCombined) thats why you have to change the keybinds in ed.

Good call.

That's the long and short of it, yes.

No, you set the curves, activate the profile, then launch Elite. When you go to Options > Controls, you click on the axis you want to set and push the stick along that axis when the pop-up... pops... up. You will also need to set all your keys and triggers manually, as there is no preset binds file for the new virtual stick. It shouldn't take too long - I can redo my entire binds file in easily less than ten minutes.

As for pip management, are you talking about the hat on the stick that no longer works when you set custom response curves?

Talking of Joystick Curves backup ... does anyone happen to know where joystick curves stores its profiles? Wanted to double check that I was backing up my own but I'm damned if I can find out where they are.

Just got to this page while helping out someone, the file with your profile is in
C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Local\apps\2.0\data After this there will be a few other folders with various numbers/letters \Data\1.0.0.1\user.config
My file/config is in
C:\Users\my user name\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\Data\20L2AJM8.JYL\DY5ZWTMW.PJO\joys..tion_582c649bb763629a_0000.0000_05fd3b9425b41ed3\Data\1.0.0.1

Awesome! I've created a shortcut to that so I don't lose it again - thanks!

Well, this is handy.

I was actually going to post a thread in the hardware forum asking about this.

I'm in the process of building a custom joystick from scratch, using a couple of Leo Bodnar's joystick boards.
The only "problem" with it is that the boards simply make use of Windows' default software/drivers which aren't exactly "feature rich".

I do like to be able to twiddle joystick curves so I've been meaning to find out if there was any 3rd-party software available to do this stuff. [up]

Okay, the descriptions everyone has provided so far have been a big help.
For me, in the VR version (Oculus) the virtual joystick doesn't show up on the controls list.

First, I get everything running:

..but when I go into ED I don't get the virtual joystick as an option.

So do you just pick one of the other options?
I feel like the TARGET software is working (I can test the responses in the software and it works), but I don't see the combined 16000 in ED as an option.

There's no default binds file for the ThrustmasterWarthogCombined virtual stick. You'll have to set your binds manually in a custom blank profile, or rebind one of the default profiles that do show.

I’ll be one to admit that moving to TARGET profiles was a bit confusing at first but I quickly got my head around it and it worked fine for me.

Then, like most people in this thread I wanted to do PIP management, then have some curves etc.

This prompted me to look at the TARGET scripting....and boy was that daunting.
It is a huge time sink, but well worth it if you can persevere...it is very powerful.
You can do as much or as little as you like with the script.

Eg. With TARGET, I have 3 different curve profiles which I can flick between on the fly either by using one of switches, or whenever I hit the FAOff button.

Aussiedroid has a massive and versatile script available which does pretty much everything and is hugely customisable for those who’d like to take a look at what can be achieved!

Ah, okay...that would be the missing piece then.
HUGE thanks - I promise not to murder you in space, assuming I actually learn how to dock.

Hello all. I use a Thrustmaster t16000 HOTAS and I've been trying to configure curves with TARGET software, but I failed everytime. I downloaded a profile for Elite from Thrustmaster website and it works fine, but I can't remap the bindings in game because it seems to use some kind of different keyboard layout so I end up overwriting stuff when changing binds, so I think I have to create a brand new profile but I simply fail to understand how the software works. lol

Any help is appreciated.
I just bought a new Extreme Pro Joystick to return to the game with. I immediately ran into the same problem. All I can say is that the "stick" will work with a different set-up but its sensitivity is horrible, like on or off. So I made sure it was on Joystick set-up in the options at the top. Then just went about readjusting all the keys on my keyboard and Joystick, my way. When the apply button was hit, the header at the top says CUSTOM but it still as the Joystick mode and the sensitivity is spot on.
I kept wondering why it was so difficult for me to pilot my ship until I made those adjustments. Now its smooth and sensitive to pilot around.

He knows ya know, he helped me with mine.

Play in Open with a Docking computer, there are tons of CMDR's that love a ship with it installed.

I have TARGET working now.
Any recommendations on a good setting for the 'S' curves?
I don't want to make the 'S' too extreme, but I want it useable.

I know that is an individual thing but I'm struggling my way through flight assist 'off' so I'm not really the best judge of the fine line between learning to fly this way and making a useable 'S' curve. That is to say, I wouldn't know if the 'S' curve is broken at this point. :) What works for some of you experienced flyers?

I have a deadzone value of 3 on the X and Y axes, with a curve value of 3 or 4.

Excellent.

I've about the same set up, kinda switching back and forth in that range.
Did you say you had the 16000?

It is taking some effort to get used to 'slight' inputs.
I have several, yes.

The slight inputs does take time. Even with the curves properly set up, it can still be twitchy - it's easy to over-work the inputs and end up swinging back and forth because you're overcorrecting. Focus on getting the initial movement right, and appreciate the difference between good control and good enough control at the beginning. I found it important to have my elbow on a hard surface at the same level as the base of the stick to make sure that my inputs are consistent so I can develop the muscle memory. Docking and messing around outside stations and surface bases is good practice.

Thanks for the props JUDZ.

As they say, talk is cheap, so I've written a post and included my basic PIPs + Curves TARGET Script over at;
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...pt-PIPs-and-Curves-here?p=7466480#post7466480

Feel free to download and try it out.
Or, not.

Not that I use TARGET but this looks good so I've added it to the "software" sub-section of "accessories, add-ons and tools to improve the ED experience" in my Best-of-the-forum-(and-elsewhere)-v2 thread.
