Horizons How to find POIs

I realise that this is a stupid question but I've flown over 2 planets now for 10 mins each and not seen anything worthwhile to land on.
What am I doing wrong?
How long does it take to find a POI?
I guess that they are circles that appear somewhere - on your radar? on your HUD?
Also what height do you need to fly at? Is it above 2km or below - I've been told both in the forums.
Should you be in supercruise or normal flight?

Help!

Fly 1.5 km above the surface and POIs will appear on the scanner. They will spawn anyway, but if you fly lower they won't show on the scanner.

Here is the key part though...make sure your scanner is zoomed out as much as possible. As standard it is zoomed in max (and that should probably be the other way around IMO.)

Blue circles will appear. If the POI is big enough you should be able to spot it from your ship. Others might be smaller and even if they are possible to see it might be tricky due to the scales we are talking about.

When in your SRV you can find POIs by looking at your wave scanner at the front. High frequencies = artificial stuff, Low frequencies = natural.

Yeah I also can find nothing. took a mission to find an escape pod....flew around for 30 minutes found three huge blue circles on planet landed and drove for an hour not finding anything other than cliffs I could not get over. what a waste.

Sorry to be a pain, could you elaborate on this point ? What do you mean by frequencies ? Is it the sound ?

If the line you see on the SRV wave scanner appears on the top of the scanner = high

Bottom = low

You can also learn to recognize the sounds and what they mean...but it's a bit trickier to explain with text...and I need to put the kids to bed now... ;)

Ahhhhhhh it makes sense , thank you so much !

about the weave scanner of the srv, just point to your ship and you can notice the difference of sound and how to face to the source, using headphones help a lot.

I find the blue circles completely useless.

Even when they show up sometimes I just cannot find anything, even circling around with SRV scanner.

On the other hand, even if there are no blue circles, if you land and drive around for a while, eventually you will find something, because it's entirely random.

Also, since POI and materials placement does not depend on terrain in any way, there is no point landing anywhere except the most flat areas - much easier to drive, and you won't have to climb to the ship, that if recalled can land on some high mountain above you.

I noticed that somtimes POIs will start off big the become incredibly tiny until you get very close to them (then they get big again). Does that indicate anything specific?

No. The scanner scale is non-linear, so things far away are supposed to be displayed smaller.
Or maybe it's just another example of the Frontier's trademark anti-design, aimed to make the game "more fun" for you...

I was having very good luck by positioning myself above 1500m and put myself in the blue circle. Then pitch the ship down and search for it visually. I only had trouble finding one of them. The rest you can see out the window between 6-800m. Just go slow and be sure and circle if it doesn't pop out. It's easier than trying to use the scanner on the ground.

Can I add to the stupid questions.

Can a blue circle POI can just be like a material rock and therefore pretty much unspottable from a ship? I've seen blue circles them and been completely unable to find any structures in my ship quite a few times. It's just from a ship I wouldn't have thought a rock would give off any signature when compared to say a man-made structure.

Actually I have my radar set up for Linear rather than Algorithmic. ;)

But that's not what I mean. I mean it starts off a big circle at the far end, then get wee and tiny as I get closer, then blows up huge again as it hits the last ring.

Well, in this case I guess we can confirm that the devs actually want you to waste time "have fun" searching for it.
