How to get steam controller working on Elite Dangerous?

I've got a throttle and joystick so I don't really need to do this I just want to try it with a controller vs a joystick, my problem is that it won't work, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. This is the only game that it doesn't just automatically work even if I don't set anything up. Any suggestions?

Honestly no, as when I tried it a few months back, it did work right off with no config needed (except to map keys).
I had previously mapped a xbox360 controller though for the SRV and it used that profile...

Good luck getting yours to work.

I play exclusively with the Steam Controller and it works great.

First off you want to use the Gamepad template for the basis of your config on the steam controller.

In Elite Dangerous pick one of the Control presets for gamepad. This will get a basic config working for you that works like a 360 controller.

However such a basic setup won't let you see how the steam controller really shines with this game. You will need to put in as much and probably more effort into configuring a good setup with the steam controller as you would with an unfamiliar HOTAS setup. It helps a lot if you already have some familiarity and understanding of how to set up your own steam controller configurations for other games.

The way I fly with the steam controller is completely different from the standard gamepad setups. I have the gyro control the pitch and roll, the thumb stick control yaw and vertical thrusters and right pad control lateral and back/forward thrusters. This gives me constant control over all six axis of movement and is essential for combat.

You can map controls in Elite Dangerous just as you would for any other device. With a bit of creative use of combo controls in ED and mode shifting on the controller I was able to map every single control to the steam controller. It can get a bit complex and requires time to get used to. I've simplified things a great deal now by using VoiceAttack + HCS Voicepacks for ship management and EDTracker for head look and the steam controller is now just for flying.

If you need any help on understanding configuration settings and how to tweak things for optimum responsiveness just ask. I've been changing and tweaking this setup for two months now and know most of the ins and outs and how to get it singing sweetly. HOTAS is still probably the best flight control to use but I like to play on the sofa / big screen and for that the steam controller can not be beaten.

trying to follow your steps but my controller is almost non responsive.. been fighting with this controller for 3 days and I really like it. I know its potential but setup is killer

Yeah. Set up is a killer and the learning curve pretty steep. And to be honest configuring it for ED is tougher than for most games. I would never suggest it as a first game to make a config for.

By "almost non-responsive" I'm guessing you mean movement control. Make sure you aren't using mouse emulation or mouse like joystick for any movement axis - stick to to joystick move. Then it's a case of learning how to tune joystick move. In game set all dead zones to 0. On the controller you will get a wider response range by setting the curve to linear, and stretching the outer deadzone out to 80-100%. You will also need to use the anti-deadzone setting to reduce any remaining inner deadzones to a minimum - I like a very tiny deadzone on the gyro and a slightly larger one on the pad. It's all about what feels right for you. Take you time and only change one setting at a time. Experiment with very low and very high settings so you start to understand what each setting does and then narrow down to towards and optimum setting.

If the above is confusing try reading some of the guides. Here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamController/ and here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/353370/guides/

I really advise trying doing some configs for simpler games first. It wasn't until I made a config for the wingsuit flying in Volo Airsport that I really understood how to tune the gyro properly.

ok I sat in practice mode for a bit. at time the controller is recognized then all the sudden when I log back in it isn't. it seems its a pretty common problem

I've made a setup, all the in-game and controller settings match, but ED doesn't properly recognize my left stick (setup as d-pad to keypresses) or my shoulder buttons (set up as r/lclick)

Using the steam controller hud (shows used keybinds when activating SC keys), it shows that Steam knows what I'm pressing, but ED doesn't listen. The shoulders buttons don't work at all, and the left stick ends up changing my throttle instead of pitching.

On the plus, I do this in preflight, so I don't die, but it's getting to be nearly as frustrating.

So, update: ED flight check doesn't take into account landing override controls {-..-}
