How to get the DK2 working

For all you who dont have headtracking working with DK2, _turn off/pause the service_ , ie. right click on your oculus icon in the tasktray, select 'configuration utility' , then 'tools' -> 'advanced' -> 'pause service'

Then launch E:D , headtracking will now work. This is because DK2 needs to emulate being DK1 to work with E:D, the newer SDKs do not work (no headtracking).

Hi and welcome to the forums
In answer to your above statement this uses the inbuilt head tracking in the DK2 not the camera and the drift with no reset button is just too bad to use.
The drift is random, sometimes I find looking straight ahead I'm looking out the side window and in other extreme cases out the back. I suppose trading you could just log out and back in. For combat testing its unusable.

Yes unfortunately :(

Hi all,

I have been playing ED for two days now with the DK2 - I had quite a hard time to set things up as the current OVR runtime still buggy. In order to get the head tracking you need to do two things!:

- first on desktop click Windows button + R to open up the execute pop up (on Windows 8 - 8.1) and type in taskkill /im wscript.exe /f
- then you can:
1. still with the same command kill the OVR service => taskkill /im ovrservice_x64.exe /f

OR

2. with the new oculus configuration utility you can "pause the service" (go Tools then Advanced then pause - do not forget to turn it on again for other démos etc)

Anyhow, you will still encounter issues with the galaxy map with the rift ... very hard to select stars you want to go to atm ... it actually stops me from using the rift.

After there are many others tweaks to get it working properly in order to get a proper rendering. Be patient for Frontier to issue a real DK2 support and for OVR to give us a proper SDK... Bear in mind that it is a dev kit though ;)

Also for people having issue with the F12 command personnaly it always worked for me so you must have done something wrong on your end.

At last maybe some could help regarding one issue I am having with the game:

The game is very dark and the entire ship cabin is very orangy... sometimes the image get very bright (much better and clearer) when I look with some extreme angles and or when the tracking camera seems to glitch. Anyhow I believe I should see the game as bright all the time and that I am playing dark as it glitches in fact all the time. I believe it is related to the camera not properly working and sometimes it suddenly briefly works. any ideas? Or I'llhave to wait for SDK and / or frontier actual support for DK2 (I believe the problem lies in their hands for this specific issue).

At last I will also test supersampling ED to a higher resolution it apparently works pretty easily on ED but will obviously require much more powerful rigs (somes peoples are having FPS issues with 780 with ED supersampled xD)

I just got the DK2, and get the cockpit view but Tracking doesn't work at all in ED. Yes, I switched off the service (both by killing the processes, and again by "pausing" the Oculus service via its taskbar menu after a reboot).

I get Dreadhalls working OK, but that's DK2-compliant.

Here is what I did to get it working:

1.Download this tool:

http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2c6qqc/updated_unofficial_oculus_service_manager_by/

2. Set DK2 to extended desktop in windows. Make sure Frequency is 75hz (I think it defaults to this anyway).

3.Before you run the tool make sure you run the Oculus Config tool and set viewing mode to extended.

4. Run the oculus service manager and stop service (because ED doesn't work with latest SDK).

5. Run Elite and set main monitor to DK2 (Normally second monitor but if you already have a second monitor it should be tertiary).

DK2 with full tracking should work now.

This assumes you have an Nvidia card. I think there are issues with AMD.

There are ways to get better resolution by supersampling:

http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2cnas5/supersampling_the_dk2_2560x1440_in_elite_dangerous/

This helps text and generally the whole resolution to become clearer.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: I've heard that USB3 slots cause the DK2 to have problems so use a USB2 slot if none of the above works. Saying that, if you are using Direct mode fine then this probably isn't the issue.

First make sure the rift is recognized. It should not be greyed out in the config utility. Sometimes that happens to me and I need to right click the desktop, select screen resolution and then click "detect" for it to see the rift. Then you go back to the oculus config, make sure it is in extended mode and then disable the service. Now you can launch the game.
With the sdk 0.4.2 you don't need to use bilagio's tool.

OK thanks for the tips, I got the rift working and tracking OK. But the frame-rate is terrible. In-game (inside the hangar) I never get above 40FPS reported by FRAPS. Changing NVidia's V-Sync, Tripple-buffering and/or Ambient occlusion makes no difference.

Specs:
EVGA 4Gb GeForce GTX 670 Superclocked
Intel i5-3570K @ 3.8GHz Liquid-cooled
Windows 7 Pro SP-1 64-Bit
8Gb RAM
Gigabyte G1. Sniper M3 Motherboard

Hi
I have slightly slower card (660), with low settings (in OR I can see no difference between hi and low) in 1920 I'm getting around 72 fps inside the station, obviously not enough for DK2 - time to upgrade maybe :/

Text for me looks horrible, I tried supersampling and must say that I see little difference or at all. Now I understand the article from Rockpapershotgun, they were speculating that ED IS maybe not a perfect match with OR, and I started seeing it this way, dogfights are beautiful, it is so much better beeing able to look around, but reading, or galaxy map is one big mess :) From this point of view EVE: VALKYRIE will be much better game on OR - I hope I'm wrong and ED will be totaly playable, at the moment for me is so so :)

Text is pretty bad, I find that putting <SSAA>1.5</SSAA> in the graphics config.xml file and disabling antialiasing gives me something I can live with, but frankly, the DK2 just doesn't quite have the resolution that the text menus need.

SSAA 2.0 is too much for my machine to handle until we get SLI support (6Gb 780 GTX), but 1.5 gives you 3 pixels of supersampling for every 2 pixels of display, so it doesn't alias too badly.

I can't wait until we get SLI & Direct Rift support.

Your brain will get used to it. Brains are very good at un-jumbling things. I could even read the text in the DK1 after a while and the DK2 is much better.

Yeah, I can read it, just. 1.5x supersampling seems to help a lot, but it's still not great - I have to disable antialiasing or my frame rate goes into the toilet, so that's not great either.

Welcome to beta hardware testing.
Yep, beta hardware with beta software.

I suspect ED could use a slight UI redesign for OR users, maybe with a slight increase in font sizes or better use of real estate.

I wouldn't mind seeing some reorganization of menus in general tbh.

Yep,a VRi woud be good especially in the galaxy map.

I thought i would add my experience so far as i have discovered what my problem is. I get judder whenever i rotate my head, so not when i lean left/right and i have tried everything to get it to be smooth. So i ran fraps recording and i've found i'm averaging 65fps. That must be why i get the choppiness.

My specs.

i7-4790@4.6ghz
16gb ram
GTX 760 directCU11 2GB

In Game Options

All off/low

Hope that helps anyone figuring out whats up.

TLDR - run fraps.
