How to improve throttling for keyboard users

Hello.

I'm playing with the keyboard, and throttling control is not very functional with it. Especially during combat, where you need to throttle quickly from forwards to backwards to keep your target in your sights. Yes, one could assign more keys to throttle levels, but I only have five fingers on each hand

What would help immensely, is multi-tapping. Let's assume the default here: "W" for increasing and "S" for decreasing throttle. What should happen is the following:

If throttle is currently zero or forwards:

  • Double tap W - Go to full forwards throttle
  • Double tap and hold S - First go to zero throttle and then start applying backwards throttle
  • Triple tap S - Go to full backwards throttle.

If throttle is currently zero or backwards:

  • Double tap S - Go to full backwards throttle
  • Double tap and hold W - First go to zero throttle and then start applying forwards throttle
  • Triple tap W - Go full forwards throttle

("Double tap and hold" means push once, and then on the second push keep the key pressed.)

The time between taps should be kept fairly low (like 120ms or so, or maybe even configurable), in order to avoid activating these functions by mistake.

This would make playing with the keyboard more effective. It also frees other nearby keys near the left side of the keyboard for other things (like "X" to go zero throttle, that would not be needed anymore.) Currently, this sort of quick throttle control is only possible with an analog stick/joystick or by assigning extra keyboard keys which makes things much more complicated.

I hope you consider my suggestion, even though I'm a new player :p

I approve,

one way I think you can kind of do this currently is with shift

so
w = increase throttle
shift + w = max throttle

You also might be able to find a third party tool that does what you're asking

I would do that but shift is my FA-off button that I use quite a lot, so the double tapping would be useful for me. Nice call though, I might use CTRL which is a bit less comfortable.
