How to look for geysers - beginners guide

Full list of geysers found on HIP 41908 having scanned maybe 2/3 of the surface (and probably overlooked some sites during that :) )

Question - what height are the volcanic feature physically visible from?

Different on each body based on terrain shape and colour, surrounding light condition and type of geysers. Some of them you can see from 20km, some are not visible even if you are less than 2 km. That is why I rely on POI to find them, this always works.

Thanks. I think I found some yesterday, but it was pitch black in that spot an on a very steep mountain side. Parked my ship nearby and went to bed, hopefully when I wake up it will be bright day over there :)

That's it, I give up on this. Yet another buggy feature...

chicken :) In my experience after finding 100's of things, the ones I cannot locate on the ground are less than 2% so there is really no point of being dramatic and uninstalling Elite, just find next one, I never got two in the row :)

It's OK, Baton. You know how I feel about the game lately. This was one thing I didn't try yet. So I did and now it turns out it's bugged as well. I won't spoil your thread with negativity, so - thanks for a great guide, it did come useful, as I learned a few new things (how to shallow-glide for example, which helps with navigating the planet), so something positive was gained from it. I will try again in Q4 maybe when we will hopefully have more in game tools and more interesting mechanics to do stuff like that.

I just hope the Q4 update doesn't wipe out all the sites you've found ;)

When approaching the surface of the planet at some point (typically between 30km and 15km) your altimeter will jump suddenly and it may show slightly different altitude. This is the moment your sensors will start showing POI’s on the ground
Probably a noob question but when POIs are discoverable above 10km why not just supercruise between 10-20km to find them ?

POIs are not visible in orbital cruise (there is no supercruise so close to the planet), only in normal flight or glide :)

So glad I found this thread, it has helped me immensely, to find my first geysers. I'm nearly 5KLYs northwest of Colonia, and decided to search for geysers. After a few days of fruitless searching, I decided to search the forums first. Things are much easier when you have some clue as to what and how. I'll post some pictures when I remember how. Thanks for the great help everyone.

This thread should be stickied, it is that good. At least until Q4 when who knows what we'll get. I now found quite a few silicate geysers and lost all data on two as F10 stopped taking pictures...

Anyway, with this thread we stand a chance.

Thanks everyone for good words. As you mentioned, there are big changes coming in Q4, so there is no point in brute force search anymore, I am waiting patiently for new better times :)

It will be a little bit sad if you can just drop drones and find them. Should have made the sites bigger and more obvious. I found the best way to find them was just going out and looking and you kind of get a feel for where they pop up. I found a few sites not even using the scanner but just normal flight at about 10km with the out of ship camera on and focused all the way back. Just chill and let the ship fly :)

Interesting to know about the little rock being a bug. I have found plenty of those.

This us something I'd not like to happen. Drop a drone, see all. Pretty much a mcdonaldisation of exploration. I'm really liking that moment a after hours of flight when a tiny poi spawns on your scanner and place turns out to be geyser/fumarole site. What I'd like to see is the ability to add discoveries to surface map with coordinates and first explorer name.

Thank you so much for this. I haven't found anything yet but I have a planet I want to find them on and I have been doing it all wrong. This has answered so many questions!
