Newcomer / Intro How to move around properly and easily?

I started playing this game only just yesterday and find it extremely hard to move. Can somebody give me the best control schematic to move around easily in? Or the best techniques on moving around better?

Step one: retract your landing gear, as it caps your speed to half of normal.
Beware of flying faster than 99 m/s inside and near the station.

What controls are you using? Keyboard and mouse? Joystick and/or HOTAS? Gamepad? Also, what do you mean by "extremely hard to move"? Do you mean turning or acceleration?

You can maneuver best when your speed is in the "blue" range.

Your best movement is pitch (up and down) and roll (spinning sideways).

Acceleration is not instantaneous, it takes a little bit to build up speed. Your throttle indicator is just to the right of your radar, where you have a blue strip next to it. The blue area is where you would have optimal turn control. By default W and S key increases and decreases the throttle. Keep an eye on the throttle and you should see where you're at, and the bar that follows your setting is your current speed. Note that, as mentioned before, your speed need to take a little time to catch up to your settings.

By default the mouse control is set to pitch (rotate up and down) and to roll (spin along your view axis). Some people are not used to the roll when you move your mouse left and right. You can change your mouse X axis to YAW instead in Options -> Controls. Some people feel that's more intuitive as it moves the view like you would a desktop pointer. Note that yaw is generally slower on all ships, so this setting will reduce your performance. And if you remap the mouse X axis to yaw, make sure you map something else to roll. You will want to roll at some point, so make sure you don't end up with no key bindings for rolling.

I would highly recommend playing with your control settings in the first tutorial until it feels right for you.

also you have the options to make 2 different setup for steering the ship. you can have mouse controlling pitch and yaw on the main control and then bind a key to activate "alternate steering" and set alternate steering to control pitch and roll.... and if I remember correctly you have a 3'rd option to make steering control for when your "landing gear" is deployed....

I personally use this feature because my Trustmaster Warthog do not support the "twist" handle on the stick otherwise it's like the Saitec models exept it feels much more solid(non plastic like) when handling it....(in my opinion it's worth the extra price compared to the X.52-X.65

Have you upgraded your ship at all? If you've added modules, you might have added weight, which needs to be countered with stronger thrusters.

When new I did all my experimenting in the Tutorial for docking.
You need to really be able to manually dock.
This tutorial is best for movement practice.

I found it tough using KB+M, then i bought a cheap HOTAS, and things became a LOT easier!
This was my 1st HOTAS, and its great(if a bit plasticy- buy hey!) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Joystick-PC-PS3/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456416923&sr=8-1&keywords=hotas

Once you set it up and become accustomed to it, you`ll wonder how you ever managed without it!
I have then progressed onto a X55 Rhino HOTAS(expensive) so its all about what you want and how much cash you can justify to spend on the game(remember you can use it for other games too).

Keep playing around and it'll get much easier. The game has a steep learning curve for controlling the ship and manual landings. But once you get it down you'll be zooming into stations and touching down on a pad like second nature. I agree with others: even a basic joystick will make things FAR easier. I started playing the game with an old MS SideWinder Pro which had a throttle on the stick base and some extra buttons. It worked quite well. Z-axis (twist) capability on the stick to emulate footpads/rudders is also extremely handy. Learning to play the game with a full HOTAS system with all controls mapped to stick/buttons is absolutely amazing... but before dealing with custom/advanced controls, I'd first focus on the core mechanics.

Another great source of info are Youtube tutorials:

Also other commanders have some great guides out there.

FYI the T-Flight system linked earlier would be a great starter/affordable stick combo. I own the X55 myself and it is loaded with buttons/switches and such. I can't fly without it now. A lot of other commanders use the X52 and X52 pro as well. But the up front costs can sometimes be steep. I had to pinch a few pennies and limit the beer budget to get the x55. ;P

Hi and welcome to the best game ever (well tbh Ive only really played this - but been at it for a while now and still love it)

My first advice would be to watch the tutorials either search them out yourself on YouTube, or have a look here.

It is as people have already suggested a steep learning curve, but its well worth it.

Good luck and Fly safe Cmdr
