How to operate a detailed surface scanner? DSS

Hi guys,

Does anyone know how to operate a Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS)? I also have the Advanced System Scanner, which works fine after I assigned it to the second fire group, but I can't assign the DSS, although I have one. Or is the DSS coupled to the advanced surface scanner?

You only need one surface scanner. Target a planet and get close enough to scan it automatically. The closer, the faster.

You need a system scanner and a surface scanner, but its automatic, basically its the same as without but this gives back more info.

For the DSS, you just point at the object you want to scan, and once it is in range it will scan automatically. You do need to keep the object centered or the scan will stop and need to be restarted.

Besides giving you extra creds for Exploration,
The surface scanner gives you extra detail in the system map if it's an unexplored planet.
Tells you what % of materials you can surface mine with the Planetary Vehicle. Things you'll want to know when you start hunting mats for engineering or synthisis.
Tells you what kind of Rings are around planets (Pristine - anything but Pristine) (Metallic, Metal, Ice, Rocky). Things you'll want to know when you start mining.

It's automatic, maybe a placeholder, let's hope for more from it.

This maybe explains why some people have issues finding things like Arsenic on planets: if you don't have a DSS then you don't get to find out the % composition, but if you have a DSS you get all the percentages so you know what is at each planet. Only realised when I sold mine to make way for a CRCR and no longer am getting all the cool data :)
