How to PROPERLY Change Your HUD Panel Colors (Colours) in Windows for All Versions of the Game

Now if only doing this didn't make the NPC face pictures change colour too :( but sadly with my lovely yellow HUD everyone appears to be dying of Galactic Jaundice

hi

does anyone have a good VR config which DOESNT screw up the avatars?

thankyou kindly.

Check out this thread from the 2.1/1.6 beta forum regarding this issue. There's some useful dev info in it. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=251775 In particular... https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=251775&page=2&p=3908733&viewfull=1#post3908733

I tweaked it bit by adjusting the red a bit:
<MatrixRed> 0.35, 0.75, 1.5 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> -0.5, 2, -1.25 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 1.75, -1, -0.4 </MatrixBlue>

I like the greener primary blue colour and the introduction of the yellow text, not sure where else that will show up.

I've never tried this out, so we'll see what it looks like for real later.

I'm pretty happy with this for a first attempt. The red is oversaturated but it gets used for most of the things you want highlighted.
I think it's the bloom or whatever causes the text blur shadow effect that I need to tone down before I adjust the colours again. Did anyone figure out how to get at those options in the menu now?

While we're at it, what's the manual FOV setting?
I'd like to go beyond the max available in the options.

Followed this thread and was able to set up the color scheme shown by atomic7431 without difficulty so WR3ND's instructions are good and not sure why some are having issues...

Just a thought... the file GraphicsConfigurationOverride only has the 2 lines in it...
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
</GraphicsConfig>

but requires these also to work correctly
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
[B]<GraphicsConfig>
    <GUIColour>
        <Default>
            <LocalisationName>Standard</LocalisationName>
[COLOR=#00ff00]                [FONT=arial black][insert color settings here][/FONT][/COLOR]
        </Default>
    </GUIColour>
[/B]</GraphicsConfig>

NOTE: Running 64 bit ED Horizons thru Steam at 5760 x 1080 with the FOV bumped up just a bit...

This was the problem was I was having, and this fixed it. Thank you.

I played around with this for many, many days but in the end I went back to the stock/default orange.

While I much prefer the BLUE themes like Baron's Blue, the way this modification alters the color channels never provides the same full coverage of colors that the stock version provides. RED for example as an alert color can not truly be included in any blue theme I ever messed with. I definitely tried, but in the end, it is just not possible with the current system.

Its too bad that after all this time, and with all this interest from the community on having some HUD color theme choices that FD has still not included a HUD COLOR PICKER in the actual game. I would have much preferred one over the Engineers! ;)

I'm sure it would take a heck of a lot less work than that half baked mess took them!

I assume you've seen this thread on the subject with screenshots.
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...or-Configs-(please-add-yours!)?highlight=no2o

That gamer was simply discovering that there is really no modified scheme that will give you the exact same results on the scanner as the stock theme.

Its simply because the channels are only being shifted from their base points with no way to specify specific HUD asset color values.

Some mods get closer than others, but as I said before.... There is no blue theme out there that will give you RED PROX WARNING, SLOW DOWN warning. WANTED / MISSION TARGET etc. without having to shift the color of a bunch of other things you don't want to be red.

This looks on the surface to be a great workaround to the default color scheme, but anyone who has gotten very deep into the process will soon discover that this isn't the same thing as actually having the ability to change the primary HUD color to BLUE and SAVE. Or just the shield ring to gold, white, yellow while leaving everything else the same as stock.

I'm still scratching my head over why they choose ORANGE as their HUD color theme in the first place! ??? Such a strange color choice for a space game, where light blues and whites are the traditional colors of spaceship cockpit displays.

Orange has good visibility, has less negative impact on dark adjusted vision, and has less negative impact on daily brain chemistry cycles, so their are actually a number of reasons why it makes sense to use it as the primary HUD color.

Even with that, and not having red stand out the same as a separate warning color, which I've gotten used to and have had no issues with while playing the game, I still prefer using the blue theme I mentioned in the OP. Some obviously might not for any number of reasons.

A proper in game HUD color menu with independent value ranges per ship would be nice, of course, but it isn't currently an option.

Listed in the thread OP - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...le-HUD-Colour-Color-Configs-(please-add-yours!)

Green stays green, hostiles are violet.
Many indicators such as shields, throttle zone, etc are a standout red.
Yellow text looks good and the NPCs still look normal.

Rep for Wr3nd for starting this thread that finally got me around to trying this and for atomic's theme being the starting point for mine.

has less negative impact on dark adjusted vision

Horse Hockey... The U.S Navy used blue a long time ago, then switched to RED. Red has very good night vision characteristics however, studies have shown that blue is in fact superior to red. The U.S. Navy considered going back to blue but decided that the difference is not worth the cost.

As a side note: I laugh when I hear people say they like the red gauges on their car because it helps their night vision... The first time a car passes you or you pass under a street lamp your night vision is destroyed for at least 15 minutes. I wouldn't be surprised at all if your cars headlamps destroy your night vision as well, I just can't remember from my flight training days.

My belief is the reason for the orange displays is Braben is showing his age and fondness for the old gas plasma screens... :D

I can still remember the on the shop floor watching explicit videos on that screen... What an immersion breaker! [sour]

For dark adapted vision, that's mostly just based on what I've heard, and from what seems to work well for me in low lighting conditions, with warmer colors seeming to have less of a negative impact. Might be based off of inaccurate information though. Can't say for sure.

Regarding brain chemistry, there are a number of studies about the effects of different light colors, so there is evidence of that. Likewise I know that brighter blue LEDs can wake me up in the middle of the night and trick me into thinking that it is early in the morning. It's actually very unsettling and I've had to block out the LEDs on my cable modem, for example. Leaving a dim orange tinted light on doesn't seem to have this effect.

I've had both the orange and green monitors in the past and have a fondness for them as well because of it, though I wouldn't chose to use them these days for general use, of course.

Oh duuude that iOmega disk drive tho.... takin' me back to my Uni research days... That's a seriously updated bit of gear compared to the actual laptop tho...

That's a really nice arrangement - thanks for sharing it again :)

Yes, I remember a story about the color pink and that it has a calming effect. They demonstrated that effect by painting a jail cell pink and it was quite dramatic!

Yeah, I caught the too!

For those who used http://arkku.com/elite/hud_editor/ and set some colours dierectly to 0, do take note that the GUI wont work with simple zeros since 100=1 and 0=nothing, you must add decimal places:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?><GraphicsConfig>
<GUIColour>
<Default>
<LocalisationName>Standard</LocalisationName>
<MatrixRed> 1, 0.3, 0.01 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> 0.01, 0.55, 0.01 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 0.01, 0.25, 1 </MatrixBlue>
</Default>
</GUIColour>
</GraphicsConfig>

I'm not sure what you mean by "won't work."

The matrix color values I'm using in the OP work fine for me, zeros and all, though the NPCs do look a bit like they have jaundice.

(are you exploring in a vulture?) and well you must've changed you GUI awhile ago, that's likely why it can include 0, since I don't think matrix's can have 0 now. Either that or it just doesn't work for me.
