Global Chat? Absolutely! Who doesn't enjoy an afternoon of intellectual stimulation while chasing bounties, dodging pirates and undermining governments? How did we ever get along without this in ED?

Care to think of a mute button ? MAYBE ?

I cant imagine this game having thousand of players. I stayed in system where I spawned. Unless all spawns are random. But few youtubers I watched also spawned in my system. I should meet at least 5-20 people in 20h gameplay !

chat dont need to cover entire universe. How about 20 star systems around me or something similar. JUST LET ME TALK TO SOME ONE.

I assume you have a phone and friends? That's how you can talk to someone.

Claiming to be an MMO is not one of the selling points of the game.

World of Tanks is also classed as an "MMO" - but it's instance based.

Elite Dangerous follows a sudo science environment. Local chat can be explained through broadcasting signals in your local system. It's pushing boundaries, but it can more or less be explained from a scientific perspective.

Global chat cannot.

If you're saying that Global chat is the core feature of a multiplayer game, then I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there is a lot more to it than that.

There's no benefit in the ability to speak to people who are sitting 1000's of LY's away from you.
You have the option to add your friends and speak to them directly if that's what you want.

But what is the actual point of Global chat? When you are only instanced anyway. There's no global zone where you can see everyone. You can only see up to (IIRC) 32 commanders at any given time.

This isn't an MMO in the traditional sense. There's no leveling system, no looting system, no gating system. It's no a typical MMO, thus it shouldn't have to follow traditional MMO environments.

TAlking with friends 1000:y away is the same horse hockey as Global chat so yeah. Also maybe if there was a Global chat i could meet with people and then befriend them, as it stands if i meet someone i better take a god damn screenshot cuz God knows when it's going to be the next time ;)

I assume you are just trolling around so yeah. WHat if my friends don't like ED ? What if i want to find new ones here? But i rarely meet one dude who doesn't speak anything and just jumps to the next system every once in 2-3 days ???

You can still use local chat to speak to people and make friends... You're not going to meet any new friends using global chat if they are on the other side of the galaxy.

I am afraid guys there wont be global chat here ever. Reasons and designs we can discuss but it's all fruitless.

This game encourages self discovery. It's just different in this regard from other MMOs. It's certainly not a game to party in global chat, but you can have tons of fun locally.

Very true. Radio waves are a form of light, so they move at the speed of light (299,792,458 metres pre second) which is pretty fast. However, if you're in Sol and your friend is in Alpha Centauri, which is 4.367 light years away, it would take 4.367 years for the message to get there and the same for the reply to get back. Would make global chat pretty useless...

Of course, all that is assuming that they'd do it realistically. Which they probably wouldn't due to it being totally unusable in a game.

Right. I think arguing with realism doesn't make sense because I can watch live statistics of PowerPlay on the Galaxy map and how the powers expand while at Sag A. How this information is transported ?

I would like to see an IG chat system like in EVE. One chat window, with multiple tabs for different groups/channels. A help channel for example. Sometimes when I have questions I'm more out of game instead of ingame.

For those that don't want have a chat system I throw a common phrase, used in this forum (e.g. PP): "if you dont like it, ignore it/don't use it"

:)

What people here have failed to address is precisely what a "global" chat would add to the game experience or the simulation experience that sitting in a station and using local chat could not accomplish? A statement of "well you can turn it off..." isn't a reasonable motive for developing a chat channel that defies virtually every other aspect of the game when the resources and work-hours to be put into such a trivial and incidental feature are not insignificant for virtually no return in what is, in the end, NOT an MMO.

You are very free, indeed welcome, to advertise for friends on this forum, look for like-minded individuals on any other forum you might frequent or just talk to your existing friends, these are just like having your own personal bulletin board in-game. You can look for private groups to play in, look for communities of people that play within the open framework, or be independent and work to build up your own network of people that you enjoy hanging out with and (hopefully) enjoy hanging out with you, or perhaps even chat outside of this game or across multiple other games!

Thankfully though, the core design of Elite: Dangerous, at least as far as I can remember, has never revolved around enabling interstellar lulz, chat-trolling or chat'n'date routines. Long may that be the case!

I like how WWII online did it.

They had hundreds (999 I think) channels, so that people could quickly jump to a random channel and chat.

It was possible to flick through the channels, a bit like on a old CB radio and eavesdrop, some of those channels became established over time as the group would stay on the same number.

Would be interesting to have something like that in ED, for PvP groups it could create a whole new 'spy' career :), but the channels are there if you want to chat.

Local chat only in a game with 400 million stars and 4000k players up sorry 32 players at a time. Is there a way to enable Global chat so I can speak to some "humans" ? :- )

It is 400 billion stars and 500k players (last I heard) in ED.

How about make some friends and/or join a T/S group? T/S works far better for general chat with friends than the in-game voice or text systems.

Global chat would involve a huge amount of chat text that has to find it's way to every single player via PvP - ie it isn't going to work.

To be brutally honest, I (and probably most Players) do not want to hear random chat from 500k players. I would have no objection to their being a global chat channel though (providing I could turn it off).
