Newcomer / Intro How to set FPS MAX elite dangerous ?

Option 1 : Graphics Configuration Menu, Framerate Limit

Option 2 : in your Video Driver, if it has such a function
ELITE-FPSlimit2.jpg

(example of current AMD Video Driver)

Option 3 : Enable Vertical Sync (VSync) in Video Driver and the ELITE Graphics Configuration Menu => max. FPS is your Display Refresh rate, most commonly 60, 70 or 75Hz (but can be higher, depends on the Display)

Hey,

i found this old thread but atm i want to do the following:

I want to set Frame Rate Limit to 65.

But not with Option 2, because Option 2 gives additional Input Lag like Option 3. Option 3 sure is best for Image Quality, but VSYNC is Input Lag too. I want to set Frame Rate Limit or "MAX FPS" to 65 in game itself because that gives me less Tearing than when i set it to 60 Hz in the Game Menu (like Option 1). But there i can only set to 60, 45, 30 Hz .... in Games like Rocket League or Overwatch you can adjust the Frame Rate Limit in game to whatever you want (i set 65).

So i think i need to edit the config file or .ini-file or something like that where it is saved ... does anybody know if this is possible?

Thanks!

If you care about input lag, the best thing you can do in Elite is to turn the frame limiter off and turn on the vertical sync. That way the game will run at your monitor's native frequency (usually 60Mhz/60FPS)
Naturally you need to have a hardware that actually can reach that framerate with your chosen graphic quality settings.

I want to do this too. I want to keep v-sync off so that my monitor gsync can work. But I want to stop the game going over 100 FPS as this is the max refresh on my monitor. Otherwise when I’m in space the game will go over 100fps and cause tearing artefacts. I can only set the game FPS Limit to 90Hz or 120Hz. 90Hz works fine with no artefacts but it would be nice to get the full 100Hz that my monitor can deliver.

If you use gsync you CAN turn on vsync with it. It will utilize gysnc until reaching your monitor refresh rate, then engage vsync. Just apply the settings at the driver level (in nvidia control panel) rather than in software.

If you want to set a non-standard frame rate limit try changing the "MaxFramesPerSecond" variable in the DisplaySettings.xml, usually located in "%LocalAppData%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics".

Nice necro, here.

I'd just like to point out that introducing non-standard frame limit that is different (higher) than your monitor's max refresh rate will not under any circumstances result in less tearing

Since this seems to be necro season I'll just add one little titbit for people to consider regarding frame rates in E D at the moment:

If you have v-sync on (or any frame rate limiting) then the scanning process in FSS of bodies with any GEO features is prolonged. This scanning process is very significantly faster with v-sync off.

This has the added advantage of my exploration account keeping my toes all toasty as v-sync off causes my GPU card fan to come on. ;)

Hah, true. With frame limit off (and I never use Vsync) the game is running at ridiculous framerates on my Vega, maxing it out, basically. When I limit the frames to 60, the GPU is running on almost idle (around 1.1GHz as opposed to 1.7 at 100% load) and that makes a huge difference in noise levels.
It's just a shame that Elite isn't balanced in how demanding different parts of the game are, otherwise I could restrict the card to 1.1GHz manually and wouldn't have to use the frame limiter.

Is this true even if you have the vsync enabled in the drivers and NOT in the game itself? Just asking out of idle curiousity, many games that have problems like this with the game's vsync can have the problem circumvented by instead enabling vsync only in the driver software itself.

I don't actually have vsync on for ED, pretty much not in any game I play, but these sorts of topics interest me.

I don't know, my driver settings are to use the game settings. The only application that I change that for is Flight Simulator where I do a lot of tuning in the driver settings. I have always just let E D run as it comes in Ultra with no tweaks anywhere. As Chris says this means with v-sync off I am running at hundreds of FPS all the time and so the GPU gets warm enough for the fans to come on.

I just enabled V-sync globally and left it off in E D - FSS scanning a body with bio features took a fortnight (well it felt like that) - so it seems entirely dependant on frame rate, however set.
