How to setup Mixed Reality headset?

Ok, so how do I get Elite to run using a Microsoft mixed reality headset?

any special settings needed?

Yup, your gonna have to wait for SteamVR to support the MS Mix Reality Headsets... Rumoured to be around Christmas time for a release I think.

Thanks

yeah guess never really thought about it, just thought each game would have their own hooks into VR headsets, guess it's less work for fdev to do if they use Steam's API etc instead of having to add code for Microsoft's platform

Hi folks,

So, as an original kickstarter backer am I not allowed to participate in E.D VR? I have early access to SteamVR for my Dell Visor (MS. VR/AR), but I believe the original game was DRM free?

Thank you kindly.

DRM isnt really a thing from what i can tell, anyone can download and install the game but to get in the it you need to sign in with a frontier account which you should have gotten from the kickstarter or when you bought the game for non backers.

Its possible you have the code to enable elite on your account in you inbox, i dont really know how Frontier dealt with that since i wasnt around for the kickstarter.

Start steamVR, start up the game launcher, log in, start the game itself, go to graphics and set 3D to HMD.

Ok so just to update, I signed up for the Microsoft mixed reality Steam VR beta, and got my key yesterday.

straight into Elite and.... WOW gives you a real sense of scale sitting on the pad inside a station.. being able to look around the cockpit was also cool, I had to lean to "see" past the back of my chair, while i was looking back and leaning in my actual chair felt like I was there!

of course not everything is roses, it seems to take a long time from startup till ready to fly and had a couple of crashes, but to be expected as it's still in beta.

For this reason I was too scared to try flying my cutter so brought a cobra in case i prang it in the slot ;-) will just practice flying it around till I get used to the headset.

This is my first VR headset I have owned, and I would recommend if you are thinking of getting one to definitely try one out first if possible. it has taken me a while to get used to it and using it properly, i.e. turning my head to look instead of moving my eyes.
In case you don't know because of the lenses the focused area is directly in front if you use your eyes to look to the sides it's blurry.

And took some juggling to get the headset on in the correct place with my glasses on, but once on and adjusted no issues with them. I have the acer headset, so not sure about the fit of the other brands.

Running with a Nvidia 1070 and processor is a i7-3930k.

looking straight on the text is clear enough to read easily. Obviously not as sharp as a monitor but I have no issues reading any of the text I've found in game so far

Nice, I've been thinking about getting one and trying to decide what GPU to up grade to. The Lenovo has been getting some positive reviews and the Samsung looks like it will be very good, I just don't like the price. I know some have been saying the Samsung has the best resolution but by the time you pay for one you can get a Rift and a few games.

Does the headset jack work with a mike? I have a good headset now with a mike and I so I wouldn't mind getting the Lenovo or Acer if I could get them without the controllers to save on the initial buy in.

What kind of frame rates are you getting?

Do you have to have a Steam Key to use SteamVR? I have a Steam account but that's just because I play The Golf Club. I purchased Elite Dangerous through Frontier's web store. I'd prefer not to play Elite Dangerous through Steam but can request a key if absolutely necessary.

You don't have to play Elite through Steam. I also have a normal version I bought via the Frontier store. Have a Steam running, install the SteamVR and Mixed reality for SteamVR apps (they're free in the Steam store). Then launch Elite. If you played it on a monitor before, you will have to go to the options and change the graphic output to HMD+headphones/speakers and restart the game. Next time you lauch the game, SteamVR launches automatically and you're in.

Thank you. Will I be able to Alt+Tab to switch to the SteamVR hub/Cliff House? I ask this because I use some Web Tools on occasion.

The game runs in window on your monitor, with Cliff house underneath it. All you have to do is flip up your visor (unless you have Samsung - all others have the hinge) and you can work on your monitor where you can have browser open etc.
If you want to return to Cliffhouse in your headset, you can press the windows button on a controller or windows key on your keyboard. You'll be back in the Cliffhouse with the Elite window "sitting" next to you. You can do whatever you want in the Cliff house (If you have a long SC journey, you can go to the cinema room and watch something. :D) and return to the game at any time by clicking on the Elite window. :)

Sorry to dredge this up, but I'm wondering if Frontier have announced any interest in having Elite Dangerous run through WMR directly through the cliff house like other games currently available on Steam (ie Arizona Sunshine, Superhot VR, etc...). Surely it must be a simple (?) licencing issue - and it might provide a new venue to reach customers with? I can only assume having to run the cliff house AND Steam VR is using up system resources better put towards the game itself?

This sounds like a good idea to me. I'm not sure how Steam would feel, but Frontier is currently engaged in a contract with Microsoft for the XBox One Platform so I don't see how Steam could have any legal kick. Sounds like it is just a matter of integrating the VR routines of ED to Microsofts WMR protocols. But it would have to be done on Frontier's side. I'm sure those protocols are closed source so they would have to get Microsoft's permission. But like you said, this could provide a new way to reach customers.
