How to speed up having a look into the FSS (for use with HOTAS or KB/M)

UPDATED 16.12.2018: It seems to work with several HOTAS' (including T16000M, which has a Throttle integrated, thanks to DarkPaladin who tested it). For KB/M (Keyboard/Mouse) it is necessary to (re-)bind 2 keys. Configuration with gamepads not yet tested.

What this is about:
For HOTAS: Speed up of opening and leaving the FSS, without using the Throttle, only 1 key/button to be pressed
FOR KB/M: Speed up of opening and leaving the FSS, saves 1 keybinding

CONFIGURATION for HOTAS, works with T16000M, too:
Enter the Controls of the game and under "FLIGHT THROTTLE" assign a key/button to "SET SPEED TO 0%" and under "FULL SPECTRUM SYSTEM SCANNER" assign the same (!) key/button to "ENTER FSS MODE" and "LEAVE FSS".

For example, set the KEY "L" or button "JOY 9" for all 3 options.

HANDLING:
While jumping from star to star now just let your Throttle at full speed. Arrive at a system, honk[SUB](*)[/SUB] and then press the assigned key/button to enter
the FSS. Speed is automatically set to 0%, the FSS will open immediately, and when you want to leave the FSS press the same key again and voilà: the speed is set automatically to 100% and you can continue your journey without moving your Throttle.

(*) It is advisable to direct your ship, while honking, in a direction away from the star, above or under it. And beware of dangerous stars like Neutrons or White dwarfs, here you have to change your strategy. Either you throttle down to 0% while arriving in the system (entering and leaving the FSS by using the assigned key/button with Throttle down to 0% will not set your speed back to 100% when leaving the FSS), or you make a 180 degree turn and then press the assigned key/button.

CONFIGURATION for KB/M:
Assign one key (for example "Q") to "SET SPEED TO 0%" and "ENTER FSS MODE" and another key (for example "E") to "SET SPEED TO 100%" and "LEAVE FSS". Now, when you press "Q" speed is automatically set to 0%, the FSS will open immediately. For leaving the FSS and set speed to 100% you have to press "E" twice. Saves a little bit time, too. Of course you can use the assinged (example) key "E" everytime out of the FSS to speed up to 100%.

Before 3.3 I preferred to travel over long distances with throttle on my T.Flight Hotas X set to 100% continuously.

As we are now forced to use the FSS to have at least a quick overview what an undiscovered system may contain, it's annoying to throttle down, enter and exit the FSS and throttle up again and again.

I don't know if this already has been posted by somebody or anywhere else, but I have found a simple configuration that allows you to open and exit the FSS quickly without using the Throttle to throttle down and up again. I also don't know, whether this will work with other HOTAS'. Let me know this, please. It does not work when you use only keyboard/mouse (see the note about it further down below), and I am not able to test it with a gamepad, but I think it will not work with it.

CONFIGURATION:
Enter the Controls of the game and under "FLIGHT THROTTLE" assign a key/button to "SET SPEED TO 0%" and under "FULL SPECTRUM SYSTEM SCANNER" assign the same key/button (!) to "ENTER FSS MODE" and "EXIT FSS MODE".

For example, set the KEY "L" or button "JOY 9" for all 3 options.

HANDLING:
While jumping from star to star now just let your Throttle at full speed. Arrive at a system, honk(*) and then press the assigned key/button to enter the FSS. Speed is automatically set to 0%, the FSS will open immediately, and when you want to exit the FSS press the same key again and voilá: the speed is set automatically to 100% and you can continue your journey without moving your Throttle.

I hope this is a little bit useful for people using a T.Flight Hotas X. And I am interested if this works with other HOTAS', too.

Can someone test this to see if it works?

As a T.Flight user I will try that ASAP! Smart thinking OP!

EDIT: damn it works... it's so comfortable x) x) x) OP, you made my day.

It's a good idea. I'd note that you might want to set two separate buttons (keys, etc) for your zero throttle, for occasions when you might want to zero it without calling up the FSS.

Rep to the OP for a great idea.

It also reminds me that I really need to sit down and learn TARGET’s scripting language. I’ve been relying on Aussiedroid’s Warthog setup, but there are so many tweaks I want to make to it in order to personalize it.

Works with a keyboard key as well, I had F8 for exit/enter FSS and added that as a secondary key for zero throttle. Works perfectly.

It sounds nice but can mess up your sublight speed keybinds.

I have one button on my throttle set to "invert thrusters". So if i push it, in sublight speed i fly reverski. In supercruise i just stop....without moving the throttle.
This was helping me a lot.

I leave the throttle on my thrustmaster set to max all the time, when I want to throttle down for FSS I just hit X (zero throttle on keyboard) and enter FSS, when I exit FSS the throttle setting on the stick takes priority and I am at full thrust as soon as I exit. Seems simple to me.

+1 , saves moving my throttle :)

But yet many of us didn't know ! (we're not all stupid) :)
It probably stems from the fact that each binding sub group(not all) can use a pre-used key in another section. And in the past using same key for 2 actions didn't work. Looks like throttle gets priority !

I have noticed that it is "LEAVE FSS" and not "EXIT FSS MODE". Nevermind. Changed the OP and also adjusted title.

Good to hear, that some of you enjoy this comfortable, but simple config. Thanks.

I don't understand the reason, why to set a separate button for zero throttle in this circumstance:S, but of course you have to, when only using KB/M or when you want to fuel-scoop without use Throttle to throttle down.
Confirmed to work with T16000M, non HOTAS version. Brilliant!!!
Thanks for confirming this :)

I have tested this, but after leaving the FSS speed is set to 0%.

Even when I assign one key (for example "Q") to "SET SPEED TO 0%" and "ENTER FSS MODE" and another key (for example "E") to "SET SPEED TO 100%" and
"LEAVE FSS", it does not work that after pressing "E" speed is set to 100%, but it does work when you press "E" twice. This is a pity. But overall it saves a little bit of time and 1 keybinding.
I did that with a voice attack command.
Voice Attack? Good idea. I have no experience with it and will never use it, but a good idea to do it by this way.

Pressing 2 keys/buttons instead of 1 is double the work, but it's your choice when you are satisfied with this :)

When the only way explore bodies, before 3.3 was to fly over them, jumping in and out of SC several hundred times per body I used keyboard alt flight control setup for stability when gliding long distances, I very quickly picked up how the throttle was behaving in regard to entering and exiting different flight modes and how it took priority over keyboard, so I just applied that to FSS automatically, to be honest I didn't even think about it at the time, it was just something I thought everyone knew. Glad I could help.
