How to test server connections

Hello fellow Commanders.

I booted up the game this morning (Saturday 18th, New Zealand time, which would make it roughly Friday night in Europe) and again got the spinning orange ship :(

This happened last weekend too. I tried a bunch of things; rebooting, different time, unplugging my Saitek, etc etc anything I could think of to avoid clearing my save. Nothing worked so I eventually cleared it, and lo and behold - I was back in. Fine, no big deal, we are after all testing this software.

During the week I managed to play a few hours to pretty much get back to where I was, except I'm now faced with wiping again. What it means is that I don't get to test anything new by flying different ships to different locations, buying different hardware, flying different missions. Doesn't make for much testing of the beta.

I suspect that with the internet getting busy over the weekend, and their server in particular as more of us get time to play. So I'm wondering if there is a way to test my connection to whatever servers Frontier is using to run Elite? Perhaps with me being literally on the other side of the planet if Frontier runs their servers in the UK, is the system lag, ping time etc too long to connect and play? I'm only playing Solo at the moment.

I don't get to play and test much, and Saturday mornings are the one time a week where I have a few hours to myself :( Any help or ideas much appreciated!

I have opened a ticket some time back regarding the fact that when the UK and US tend to be "up" per se, I get server lost connections quite a bit, they have lessened once Solo was available but I still get them.

It's all getting ironed out as it is a complicated model, all we can do now is ticket problems to help FD iron them out.

Just giving this a bump to see if anyone knows how to ping or test the servers - I'm unable to play this weekend (again) and I think it is due to the server load/reply times being too long to my side of the planet from Frontier.

Anyone? Cheers :)

Log out in space and not docked.

I'd heard about that one before, thanks I'll try it come Tuesday when it's Monday in the UK.

I've also tried the old 'fly the tutorials again' like the docking or travelling ones, but still no go. I did try to connect to the online server rather than Solo and it did load, only to crash on a sound bug exiting the station.. :p

If it is indeed down to server load/distance around the world then I can but hope there will be localised servers or bigger and faster ones when this game goes live! Only playing weeknights from 11 til midnight kinda bites as you can imagine :)

Getting the spinning ship of doom?

Yes indeed. Only way I cleared it last weekend was to erase my save game. However I'm desperate to avoid it as it's taken me all week to get back to where I am in my Hauler so I can earn more money and finally get into the bigger ships.

Actually thought about posting a similar thread. I'm not sure, but I think the servers IP should be somewhere around the left bottom corner (can only see it when unfocusing using the rift).

Traceroute that.

On a side note, if anyone shared the IPs they get, I'd be grateful. I'm on a semi-decent connection and usually don't have to blame things on my ISP, but considering you hardly ever see anyone in MP and the lag, bugs and crashes I get aren't really compensated for by seeing a hollow dot once in a while, I almost exclusively play solo online for now.

Try creating & playing in a private group, that seemed to fix it for me - I'm stuck in that private group however, open play & solo continue to have the same issue.

Hopefully Beta 3 fixes this bug once and for all.

Thanks for this. I just read one of the threads in the beta forum
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=50347
and a technique in there (like yours) allowed me to fix it.

This post worked for me:
Some of the other posts on the board, mention creating a new closed group (just for you) then starting that up instead of solo or open..

Then fly into space , exit/save and start open or solo.

This fixed the loading for me, its easy and quick

As simple as that in my case - most grateful. Hopefully it can help some other people with the SOSD (Spinning Orange Ship of Death)

Whereabouts is that? I can see 0.3.1411.0 (0.3.1395.0 server) on the launcher..

EDIT: And 204.10.14.45307 once I log in. So it would be 204.10.14.45?

Your netlog should give you the IP address of the server, it'll also keep complaining about docking bays not being available when you're trying to log in (that's why you're stuck at the spinning ship, it's waiting for a resource that's constantly being denied).

What I found is that I still can't request docking bays even in Solo mode, I logged out outside the station in my private group, logged back in in Solo, was floating 8km away from the station & closed to docking range but every docking request was denied.

Hi, I'm also logging in from New Zealand but not getting the issues you are. I have a fairly low spec graphics cards by today's standards, which does force me to reboot now and again due to whiteouts and I do suffer from a low frame rate.
However, those niggly issues aside I don't get much hassle at all from anything else whether in solo or open play. I don't think its the international or server connections, unless you're connecting somewhere different.
I'll start logging the server connections I get too -perhaps it might help.....
For info, logged on Vodafone cable on Kapiti coast, and lately keeping out of main starting systems to visit places new:D

I've had very few issues too, playing from the Wellington region. Have always seen only one single server IP upon startup, though. I always play Open, with only exceptions when I can get landing clearance (then I may pop into Solo to do my business, then pop back in open upon take-off).

Some lag and studder at times, but generally a well-behaved connection.

:D S

Thank you Sysmon and Sneakin for your info. As you can see I've managed to fix it, so I guess it's not a server issue. Nice to know there are some fellow Kiwis playing Elite as well :)

Perhaps we need to form a Kiwi Squadron of some sort. Who says Kiwis can't fly?!

Ah - so it's the version number, not the IP - as I said I can only see there are numbers separated with dots when accommodating my eyes to infinity in my peripheral vision, but I can't read them.

Apologies for the misinformation. I'll check my netlog and tracert the ips when I get around to it.
