What's this on the right side panel... GALNET news player. How about playing some music on this radio? Nope, no radio, no music. The game has classical music, right? You know, with the docking computer. Play it in the game? Nope!
Typically in Elite I tend to drift around supercruise in popular systems keeping an eye out for trouble or head to a CG when bounty hunting is in play. I lend a hand where I can, if I can, or I get ganked by wings 4vs1 who sometimes like to abuse the rules of engagement, such as switching on crimes after already attacking me first so when I fire back I become wanted instead. It's all good fun in Elite though, for those who can afford the rebuy at least. Thankfully I can afford many rebuys, so in stubborn fashion I tend to fight to the finish. Good old "Eject, Eject, Eject"... *BOOM*. There's just something satisfying about making a last stand in a game where you can of course respawn. Show those devil's where even a spec of light exists, darkness is not absolute. But I digress... Tonight I switched things up for a moment.
I decided to do some missions in my Type-9. Source 2k of this, 1.5k of that. It was something I chose to do today as the game was rather quiet earlier on, so I figured I'd top up my safety net and make a few materials on the side. I have done these runs before. They helped prop up my credit balance on the PS4 game which I had spent some time trying to play catch up on with my Xbox game I'd spent a billion hours on.
So, anyways, I spent a few hours doing this and as much as I already felt aware of how monotonous this activity can be, I decided to just stick with it since that was what I'd set my mind to. Some of the missions I'd undertaken were wing based, which allowed me to share the result with a friend, so hey, all smiles there and worthwhile.
Right, to the main point. If this acitivy is so monotonous, then how come I actually didn't mind it so much tonight, where normally I'd feel the cells in my body begin to decay and the follicles on my head begin to recede? I mean, really, there have been days I've come away from Elite looking like the Evil Dead.
Well, I did one simple thing tonight. I opened up the sidebar to my PS4 homescreen, noticed Spotify there. I'd forgotten all about that feature on my PS4. It occurred to me I could play music in my game. Silly me, how come I never bothered to notice this before? Well, naturally, since I almost exclusively play Elite, and the fact it barely has much of a soundtrack to it unless there's some action; music was the last thing that ever occurred to me!
I streamed some Ennio Morricone, "Chi Mai", "Gabriel's Oboe (whispers in a dream), some Dances with Wolves "John Dunbar Theme" etc. What followed can only be described as the heavens opening up.
Now anybody that truly appreciates music, regardless of their tastes, can understand the power of music. It really can transform one's mood and perception of things - at least until the music stops then misery sets in all over again, haha. Elite Dangerous with regards to this particular activity, in my opinion, had gone from being a monotonous jump from system A to B, supercruise infested drag, to being pleasantly unique with the music playing in the background.
Suddenly supercruise really didn't bore me when all I wanted to accomplish was getting these missions over and done with. Suddenly dropping into a system faced with a burning Star felt impactful again as I turned to face my destination, ramping up the acceleration as I cut through space towards it. It really didn't chip at my patience, let alone occur to me how time consuming and unexciting the activity really can be. None of that mattered anymore. All that mattered was that Elite Dangerous felt like it was given new life and suddenly I didn't suffer from the tiresome burned out syndrome I'd been feeling anymore. I actually enjoyed my evening, all thanks to the music playing alongside Elite. It really did change the perception and mood for me.
If you want to test my theory in the most basic fashion, try the docking computer a few times. Suddenly the station comes to life and that otherwise eerie quietness now has some element of charm to it.
Don't stick with that thing though. It's a waste of a hard point you could use for beefing up that Hull. More hull means you can buzz the tower Top Gun style and play bouncy ball in the Space Cement Mixer.
Of course, if you favour the silence in Elite, then that too has it's appeal. I haven't gone Mining for awhile but the atmosphere and solitude of the Rings round an awe inspiring Gas Giant is enhanced entirely by the silence. So there is that, too...
Anyway, that's my late night wrap up. Anyone for FD adding music to that right side Tab?
