The discovery scanner is built-in to the ship, it is not a module that needs to be fitted. You have to assign it to a fire-button in a fire group to use it. You only see scanners / weapons on the HUD if they are in the active fire group, in the tutorial that had been done for you by the game.

There is an optional internal module called a Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS) which you use to launch probes to map planets, moons and rings. Again this needs to be assigned to a fire button in a fire group to use it. The DSS is not available in any station in the Newcomer's Zone (Pilot's Federation Administration systems).

There is a manual linked from your launcher which covers a lot of the basics even though it is out of date and much of the contents are superseded or plain missing - but you can learn about fire groups and other necessities from it.

I think that u are probably talking about the detailed surface scanner?
If you are?
Then it is a fantastic tool, once you learn how to use it...
Which takes some practice...
(it really does take a bit of practice before it becomes, easy as pie....)
Once u get into using it... It is actually a pleasure to use.
This is what gives you the road to riches payoffs, & makes it posible to get your name into the codex for your own personal discoveries...
Like everything in elite it takes prctice...
Confusing at first... But really enjoyable for me personally, once you get it!

Good luck!

My understanding is that there are 2 ways to use it. You can either press the ' button to bring up the system scan view, then hold the ' button again for about 5 seconds for a "honk", or you can assign it to a fire group via your (in-cockpit) right hand Heads Up Display. That way you just hold the fire button you've assigned it to down and you'll get a "honk".

I have assigned all my scanners to one key (using keyboard exclusively). I have yet to see the DSS do anything. Do I have to go into orbit or something>

For the Detailed Surface Scanner (which is different to the Discovery Scanner) you have to have a planet targeted and be within a certain range of it going very slowly or stationary (as stationary as you can be in SC). If the Fire Group it's in is selected, then on the HUD it should say:

You cannot assign the DSS to a key - you have to assign it to a fire button. When near enough for it to work (depends on size of body) you use the fire button, that enters the DSS screen then you move the aim cursor and then fire off a probe using the fire button. You exit the DSS using an assignment "exit mode" (assignments in image below).

ninja'd ;)

.. plus here is a video I made showing its use:

My scanners 'are' assigned to a fire button/key. They are all in one fore group and I have to change fire groups, to make them work. The system scanners, seem to work fine, at this time.

However: The other information, you have explained makes sense and I will try this put, next time I find myself in the game. Thanks.

Y'know - in these types of situations it's often better just to admit you were wrong and move on :ROFLMAO:
So you are saying that I cannot assign this scanner to a fire button/key, or what? As I only have keyboard 'keys' to work with.

Please explain, words of one syllable are probably best, for both of us.

No need to be snarky.

It is just a matter of semantics. Some things can be assigned to a key press (Chaff, heatsink, etc.) others (like scanners) cannot and have to be assigned to a fire group button. If I understand you correctly your "fire button" is a keyboard key.

You do sir, as I have already explained. Not that 'you need' telling that.

As to being snarky, how would you: In light of the fact that I have explained, my 'fire button is a key'; define the post I was responding to, in an apparently snarky manner?

Actually I meant to put a winking smiley after that comment which was just a reference to your "words of one syllable are probably best, for both of us " part. As I say, it was meant to be light-hearted teasing but I forgot the smiley. sorry ...

EDIT - Don't you use a mouse? Wouldn't a mouse button be better as a fire button? Must be horrible to target the DSS probes using just a keyboard. Just interested is all.

Well, the point is some things can be bound directly to random keys and not to Fire Buttons which are special keys.
For example i have bound Chaff, Flare and SCB to the keys C, V, B - thus i have direct access to those things without being forced to put them in a fire group and i can use them while firing my weapons.
DSS do not get this. Unfortunately nor SCA

But i'm sure @Arry already got that...

No need for apologies, we digress.

I am obviously too stupid, to ignore, being called stupid.

He has and does, but feels he needs to get his head around, a 'voice attack system' and make things easier to deal with.

Excuse me for being obvious. I don't think anyone has mentioned that you put the scanner in a different firegroup and use your k/board to change to it when you need to.
:) ;) :)

Regarding D-Scanner; Has anyone else come across the number of objects discovered differing from the number of objects shown in System View?

I had D-Scanner detect 16 objects but in System View it shows 2 stars with 5 planets orbiting the primary star.

That means the System is not fully discovered
So hop in the FSS and discover the rest of the system - get your name on some planetary bodies
