How to Use Exploration Data for Engineers - A Guide for the Returning Explorer

Because it is a re-occuring question on these forums, i decided to put up a brief guide how to use exploration data for engineers. i have returned in 2.1. myself, and i picked up various tips from a lot of threads on this topic - thanks for everyone, who shared his ideas and experience!

Safety tips at the end!

How can I use Exploration Data for Engineers?
There are two Tier 1 Egineers, that accept exploration data to gain reputation - Felicty Farseer and Elvira Martuk. High Reputation gives you access to higher level modifications as well as to other engineers. Both Engineers provide the FSD Range Increase Modification many explorers want. You want one of both with Level 5 access (for the best modification) and one to Level 3/4 (for access to the next engineers).

You can also use exploration data to raise your reputation with minor factions. Some engineers (Liz Ryder, Marco Qwent, Zacariah Nemo) require friendly reputation with certain minor factions to be unlocked. If you have any exploration data left over, you might want to sell data at a station controlled by that minor faction to get the rep quickly. See your engineer invites, which can be accessed via the right hand panel, for more details, which minor factions you want to raise reputation with. You need to sell exploration data at a station controlled by that minor faction. eddb.io can be used to find such a station (input faction name at station search).

There is are two Tier 3 Engineer - Professor Palin and Selene Jean - who also accept exploration data - but you will gain access to them much later, so you probably don't want to risk flying around some weeks with millions of exploration data.

How do i get access to those engineers?

You will have received an invitation. Farseer wants 1 meta-alloy, Martuk wants 3T of a rare good called “Soontill Relicts”. At the moment you can buy Meta-Alloys at the surface station Darnielle’s Progress in Maia, and the rare “Soontill Relicts” can be bought at Cheranovsky City Ngurii.

For safety and to speed up things ask friends or players from an exploration friendly group like SEPP, or Canonn, or the Iridium Wing to meet with you around an engineers base and drop you those commodities.

How do i sell Exploration data to Farseer or Martuk?

You need to fulfill the initial access contract (see access). After delivering your goods, you need to log out and back in, to get Universal Cartographics in the contact menu at their base. Sell exploration data in the usual way. Be aware, that reputation sync can take some time - recheck by logging in/out, whether you already have sold enough. You’ll need 4-7 mio in exploration data for level 3/ 4 Access, and 8-11 mio for L5 access.

Isn’t my Exploration Data in danger, when returning to the bubble? - Safety Advice -

With the new AI the bubble is more dangerous these days. But if you take the following security advices serious, you’ll be safe:

1. Return via a “Safe Harbour”, a System with High Security Rating at the Edge of the Bubble, with a Starport close to entry point. You can see the Security Rating in the System Map. Ensure via System Map that the Safe Harbour system isn't in a state of war / civil war, and that any intervening systems on your route also aren't in such a state. War states increase interdictions. Check outfitting/shipyard beforehand via eddb.io. Fly to the target station in a loop instead of going straight there from the drop-in star. Avoiding the heavily travelled traffic 'highways' cuts down on random NPC interdictions.

2. NPC spawns depend on your Shipsize. If you are sitting in anything larger than an AspE, switch to a smaller ship at a “Safe Harbour”. If you are sitting in anything smaller than a Cobra MKIII/Courier, switch to a Cobra/Courier/AspE.

3. Speed is still safety. Reoutfit your exploration vessel with A-class thrusters and A-class powerdistributor at your safe harbour.

4. Fit point defense. Missiles are beefed up. Also chaff.

5. Fit a good shield. Additionally Boosters and/or A small scb with a heatsink.

Outfitted like this, you are safe to go!

6. NPC Spawn also depends on cargo, and wether you are pledged to a power, or not. If you still want to minimize risk, drop all cargo you collected outside the bubble, and/or unpledge.

7. If you are still nervous, don’t hesitate to contact the Iridium Wing, or one of the Exploration Friendly Groups like SEPP, Canonn, Deep Recon X - they have pilots who will happily wing up with you.

Did i miss something? please add it to this thread!

Selene Jean also accepts exploration data. As for Palin, you need to access him through Marco Quent which means lots of flying around the bubble. It's reasonably safe in a good ship, I didn't get killed once since returning from DWE, but I'd still advise to get Elvira and Farseer up to grade 5, then grind to get Palin and possibly Selene Jean unlocked, then go out again for a few days and sell them the data. I went out again for 5 days just to get data for Palin and I had more than enough to get to grade 5 that way. Not sure about Jean, I leveled rep with her by spamming lower tier upgrades as I couldn't be bothered to go out yet again so soon.

An addition to safety tips, since you're recommending SCB's; pack heatsinks too. That chaff won't be very useful if you cook it off alongside the rest of your modules :)

checked the system map --- you are right, selene jean accepts exploration data! ty! unfortunetly you only gain access to her via todd the blater ... who wants bounties... anyway, corrected.

added heatsink.

... i got destroyed a dozend times in 2.1., i really have to rethink my play style :-D

I'd also add the following :-

  1. Check to ensure that the Safe Harbour system isn't in a state of war / civil war, and that any intervening systems on your route also aren't in such a state. War states increase interdictions.
  2. Fly to the target station in a loop instead of going straight there from the drop-in star. Avoiding the heavily travelled traffic 'highways' cuts down on random NPC interdictions. This also makes it much easier to spot an NPC that may be following you and trying to manoeuvre for interdiction.

added! thanks for sharing.

There are also some engineers (Liz Ryder, Marco Qwent, Zacariah Nemo) who require friendly reputation with certain minor factions to be unlocked. If you have any exploration data left over, you might want to sell them at their respective places to get the rep quickly. Although in Marco Qwent's case, it'll be the Sirius Corporation, and you might have their permit already.

i thought that was covered with "raise your reputation with minor factions, which give permits needed for engineer access or access to other engineers." --- made it more clear using your words. ty!

Does Selene Jean offer a different or higher tier mod type than the other three cartographic data accepting Engineers?

Thanks.

It's a good guide.
However, I would add that Heatsinks are totaly optional, and very much down to personal perference.
I've never needed them in the time I have been exploring, and they take up precious space and add extra weight.

I think its not for exploration builds but for ships travelling with exploData through the bubble,
so when using shield-cells a heatsink may be handy ?!

btw, what do you people think about a DBS as a "safe data carrier" ?!
s.th. like this: https://coriolis.io/outfit/diamondback/2pataFal5das8f4--kpkp0404030640582927.Iw1-kA==.Aw1-kA==
(never tried one actually, just clicking some builds together ;))

as you can see, it is named under safety for refitting after returning together with SCB . and you want a heatsink with a SCB in most cases. for exploration it is definetly optional.

while i love the DBS, i don't see a pro for it compared to a cobra mkIII - which is still safer, because more speed.

Coriolis states 118 MJ (dbs) compared to 80 MJ shieldbase...
although I dont understand this value to be honest ;)
(DBS seems to get more MJ out of a 3a than Cobra out of the 4a !?)

Hi and thanks for your reply but as far as I can see the thirdparty tools do not give access to these files.
They must be available somewhere otherwise Cmdrs would not be able to sell the data!
Can you please explain why we are we not allowed access to these files?

what are you aiming for exactly?

- a third party tool like DSS can record the systems you jump to, as well as the returns of discovery scans (honks as well as discovery scans)
- those are also available in the commanders log journal, for a detailed record of what contains, see here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/275151-Commanders-log-manual-and-data-sample ... you can access those log entries directly.
- third party tools can record your profit from exploration data, when you hand it in
- as that profit is depending on whether it is a first discovery for exampel, a server request is needed to calculate it, which is why you don't have that stored anywhere before that server request (besides, obviously, on FDEVs servers).
