How will changing my XBox gamertag with the new system affect my in game experience?

I've recently decided that I might want to change my gamertag on XBox to something different. With recent updates to the way XBox gamertags can be assigned, they work like discord now: example#0000. So my questions are, if I change my gamertag:
A) Will my in game discoveries remain intact with my new name?
And B) Will my name display with the # numbers or not in game?
Ultimately the answer to those two questions will depend on if I change it or not :/

I don't know how they'll display, this is the first time I've heard of a new naming system.
But any first discoveries/surface mappings you've made will be updated with your chosen Gamertag

If you’re assigned a suffix, the # symbol and suffix appear everywhere except in friends lists. You don’t see suffixes of friends in your friends list and they don’t see yours in their friends list. Your suffix is used in games so that everybody knows who’s who.

When will games start supporting the new format?
A few games released this year might support the new format, but most games won’t support it until 2020 and beyond. It may take a few years to migrate all new games over to the new gamertag format.

Can I customise the way I appear in older experiences?
Yes. If you make a paid change (your first change with the new system is free), you’re given the option to customize how you are seen in older experiences that can’t show the new format.

So the answer isn’t as clear cut as I thought, and may depend on the game itself as to how you appear when the new format is starting out. Even if Elite: Dangerous does not support the new format at first, the suffix will appear eventually.

Perhaps it takes time for the # or different language alphabets to be an allowed character in a cmdr name (and other games), and until that has been allowed your cmdr name is still going to be your old gamer tag despite what your new one is?

If no one here can give a clear answer it may be worth contacting MS support to answer any questions you have.

Games and Xbox consoles in general don't yet support suffixes (the #XXXX part) so your Gamertag probably wouldn't change in-game. Another possibility is only your Gamertag would change to your new name but without the suffix. This creates the possibility that more than one player has the same Gamertag within the game, since the Xbox Live system supports it but the game doesn't. The Elite Dangerous data, however, is stored on Frontier's servers and I don't know how it handles name changes. Gamertags could be changed so far already, so they probably have something to handle it. However, since previously no two players could have the same main Gamertag and now it's possible, I really don't know. It's also possible that your new Gamertag wouldn't even appear in First Discoveries at all, since the system already labeled those planets and it's not possible to change them.

Since there are so many unknowns at the moment I recommend not changing your Gamertag yet. I would try to contact Frontier and ask them this. Someone has to know the answers.

Now, I'm bummed out because I really enjoy the cool commander names I've encountered, and it looks like changing my name in Elite and XBox is clearly in the "too hard to do" column. Wish there was a way...

You can change your gamer tag to whatever you like for free the first time you change it.
Your in-game CMDR name will change to reflect it

I think it's awesome.

I remember what happened when I announced to the PC community that I made my Xbox CMDR a Jameson... All on record by the way. In fact... Here you go:

No approval needed. Xbox CMDR name is literally your Xbox account name.

Thanks, Un1k0rn. You are correct. Changed Xbox gamertag and that became my new commander name. Xbox added four digits to the name to accommodate "games that can't deal with our gamertag change" whatever that means, but I'm happy with the result.

Those four numbers will show up next to your commander name in Elite Dangerous. So for example if someone else changed their name to BluWolve, it would show in game as BluWolve1234.
