Newcomer / Intro Howdo I sto at unidentified signal sources?

At the moment I'm....somewhere looking for black boxes. I understand I'm supposed to be investigating unidentified signal sources when motoring in at around 30 jump, but I can't seem to stop near them so that I can see them when I return to normal speed?

Help?

Target the Unidentified Signal Source, or USS as they are also known, and drop into it like you would drop into a station. Easy as that Cmdr :)

you drop at them by targeting them as a destination try your contacts menu for that.

then drop at them just like any other location when you drop from frame space you will be in the USS and they are random if you don't see what your looking for power up your frame drive and cruise round some more till another USS pops up and repeat till you get what your after but double check the mission to be sure your in the correct system or you will never get the right USS to pop.

hope this helps :D

Thanks but I must be doing this wrong - No unidentified signal sources appear in my navigation tab at all, despite the fact that I'm pretty sure I'm surrounded by 3 or 4 of them.

Daft question then: how do I target them?

USSs have to be treated just as if you were going to a station. Once they pop up, you target them and adjust your speed accordingly. Once you are within 1Mm and at a slow enough speed, you will get the blue safety warning stating that it is ok to drop out of supercruise.

they should show in your contacts tab not the nav tab try that :D

you can also just target them as you see them too i find that easier than tabbing but we all like differing play styles :D

They appear and disappear randomly... so you may not see them all the time. Watch your "navigation menu" ... they usually appear near the top of the list since the list is in order of nearest to you to farthest from you. When one appears, select it in the Nav list to lock onto it.... and then you can use your navigation compass to actually align with it. Travel to it just like you would travel to a station or other point of interest... when you get under 1MM , you can disengage from supercruise exactly as with a station. The contents of the USS are random so you may or may not get what you're looking for.

USS's do not show in contacts, they show in the navigation pane.

Thanks for the help - yes they appeared in my navigation tab. Couple of ships so far and now at the wreckage of a ship.

This finding the black box stuff isn''t exactly exciting. How will I know a black box when I see it?!

scrap that, think I've found one - winking cylindrical object. Cargo scoop lowered - now how the heck do I pick it up?!!

To make it easier to stop, just cruise at the lowest speed (30 km/s). When the USS pops up you are already in range and your speed is low enough to stop immediately.

I've got it RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME but THERE IS NO BLOODY CARGO SCOOP INTERFACE!!

I cant' describe how annoying this is!

Cargo scoop lowered but it's just bouncing off the hull!!

AAAAAAHHHHGGGHHHH!!!!

You have to deploy your cargoscoop and also target the piece of cargo you're going after. Black box will look like any other piece of cargo.. when you target it, it will ahve the text "a black box". Deploy your cargoscoop and target the canister, and you will have a targeting thing open up on your UI on the bottom left hand side of your screen. Approach the canister slowly , keeping it in the dead center of the display in your UI . If you still can't find it and nobody else is able to answer your question I'll post a screenshot when I get home from work .. and hopefully that will help.

If you've correctly lowered the cargo scoop you should get a blue target rectangle to the left of the radar. Target the cannister and move slowly and position the cannister so it's in the target then move closer and closer until it auto scoops it.

Took me a few goes of trial and error. The first few goes they just smacked off my hull

Check this tutorial. Don't feel bad- it's really hard to learn ;)

Thanks all - I had to go to my 'contacts' tab and it was there.

I'm slowly realising that a logical approach to this game isn't necessarily the right one.

Guys I'm grateful though. The black box search wasn't one I'll do again - spent the money on a decent gun and now I'm after bad guys instead...

The first time I did a black box mission i said the same thing.. i won't do that again. However, since I got more used to things.. i actually do all of those salvage missions (black box, ancient artifact, rebel transmission, military plans, fine art) quite often. The random nature of USS's can make them a little unpredictable but usually I am able to whip them out really quickly .. the pay for the missions isn't bad... often I manage to do some bounty hunting on the side, and they don't take long.

Tip: If you pick up similar missions for different systems... like say you get one mission asking for an ancient artifact in one system and 2 ancient artifacts in another system.... you can go to either system and collect 3 ancient artifacts and then turn them all in. They don't actually have to come from the system that the mission says.

target the "unidentified sources" to set the course and head to it. You can also select these sources in your nav panel on the left.

Well, you're right. I've done another one in half the time, picked up some military secrets on the way too (which I don't know what to do with). I realise I'm not ready for the bounty hunting missions yet and it beats the hell out of trading.
