How's the flight experience with a Mouse currently?

Hey all,

So, I broke my joystick & I'm not going to replace it just yet.

Due to this, I'd love to hear about peoples experience playing with just Keyboard and Mouse currently. How's it working for you? Are you barely managing, is it just too restrictive? I'm interested to hear.

I know the game should be played with a Joystick, it's a space sim after all, but for the Beta stages at least, I'll just have a mouse.

Note: I'm signed up for the "normal" beta, yet the Premium Beta is just £10 away... :)

Cheers,

Scoob.

It works fine if you get it setup right. Best advice is to go to the waste disposal scenario and try out different options there to find what is the most comfortable for you.

It's fine after some initial tinkering, the only prob I get is when launching, if I forget to centre the mouse between pressing launch and the ship moving to the launch pad via the lift thingy, it's all over the place as the ship is released, anyone else have this problem and if so found a solution?

I used to play a lot of Freelancer, and found the initial keyboard & mouse settings in E:D extremely off-putting and jarring.

Once I changed the mouse to control pitch and yaw rather than pitch and roll, though, everything was gravy. Rolling with Q and E and using WASD as increase/decrease thrust and strafe left/right is what I'm currently using, and I find it extremely comfortable.

got to find what works for you, but I suggest binding the mouse to pitch up/down and yaw left/right where you would normally bind the joystick. add in space for pitch up as well so dont have to drag the mouse for long turns much and a+d to roll, w+s thrust, q/e and r/f for lateral thrust and your a few binds away from a great setup :)

(Binding the mouse like this should also fix your problem slpierce).

As a workaround, pressing ESC twice centers your mouse; more precisely, leaving the main menu makes the cursor jump into the center and therefore mouse control afterwards is zero'd.

I am still hoping FD hear my plea for a "zero mouse control" button instead of having to call up the main menu every time I want to zero it (cumbersome and absolutely immersion-wrecking).

I have no problems with keyboard and mouse, except in combat where I get outmanouvered all the time. Using lateral thrusters liberally does seem to help to a point, but I'm still finding it pretty hard.

Answer to OP's question... sh*te.

High recommend you invest in a HOTAS stick and TrackIR or similar. The game comes alive :)

Respectfully disagree about the mouse I bought a thrustmaster t16000m and it's gathering dust atm, couldn't comment on track IR but it does looks cool.

I'm using keyboard + mouse and have already several days experience with this.

Mouse is pitch up/down and roll left/right
A/D strafe left/right
W/S strafe up/down
Q/W pan left/right
R/F forward/backward
X stop
C 100%

I have trouble getting the strafe keys and especially the thrust keys into the choreography.
But using thrust on W/S somehow does not feel good and then I would be searching for the strafe up/down keys.

I'm constantly searching for the keys and still must think about which key to press.
So in essence: it works but it does not work very well for me.

Thanks for the replies all. Ok, I think I'll give it a go with the Mouse then. Point taken re: tweaking the axis control though, makes sense.

There are several threads in various forums on the keyboard and mouse. And the majority of comments are positive. There are the fans of keyboard and mouse who would not want an controller of type XBox or an Hotas

Keyboard and mouse control is absolutely fine. To be frank I have T Flight Hotas X but I'm not using it as I find mouse control better. However mind that it takes a long time to set mouse controls properly but when you do you'll be flying.

Yes, I just hold the key for vertically thrusting up when launching and hope I am not too far from the centre that I go into a bulkhead

Starting to get used to keyboard and mouse but there is one major issue. I'm using absolute pitch/yaw with roll set to keyboard. Problem is the mouse movement in game is glitchy. Moving mouse up down left right works but when you counter the movement in the opposite direction you are going instead of the game gradually countering your movement the other way there is a harsh snap in movement the other way. Its not smooth at all and I have tried messing with mouse dead zones and sensitivity but the sudden snap in direction is still there.

Any advice?

I have noticed ( and bug reported with video demonstrating ) this also. It only happens in the yaw axis - the pitch axis is unaffected.
For example, if you are going 100% to the left, and move the mouse so that you are only going 50% to the left, your centre point actually moves to the right instead of slowing the rate of movement to the left

I'm hoping its an unintentional bug which will be corrected, but for now I'm just living with it :/

Glad its not just me. I figured it was a bug also. I'm learning to live with it for now but once this is fixed the mouse control will be perfect.

Can you link the video please?

Ok, sounds like people are generally fairly happy with mouse control - bar the odd bug, which is to be expected at this stage.

May well pay that extra £10 to upgrade to Premium Beta tomorrow and try it out myself :)
