How's the flight experience with a Mouse currently?

Ok, sounds like people are generally fairly happy with mouse control - bar the odd bug, which is to be expected at this stage.

May well pay that extra £10 to upgrade to Premium Beta tomorrow and try it out myself :)

well... I'd still prefer yaw to be a bit nippier - but beyond that I'm coping fairly well with it.

Are there no sensitivity settings to independently configure the various axis? I'm guessing not from what you're saying. Still, I'd expect more fine tuning will be added as time goes on.

There are various sensitivity and deadzone settings - however the yaw axis is intentionally slower than both the pitch and roll axis as a design decision aimed at preventing 'turreting'

Hmm this is a fascinating thread.
I was hoping Mouse+Keyboard support would be good as I'd prefer to use this method over Joystick if it's feasible.

I did go out and buy a Joystick actually anyway, but not a really expensive one. A Logitech Extreme 3D.
So I'll try that too and see how it goes.

I had an old Cyborg 3D joystick laying around and tried it but the surprising thing was I actually preferred the mouse and keyboard.

I know its a shocker.

I understand that we're using a semi-realistic flight model here so, as real world pilots do, we roll into the turn then pull up in effect. While this works well with a joystick in many games, this is counter intuitive with a mouse. So, mouse users define left/right movement as Yaw rather than roll, as is logical on such a device, but it then feels sluggish.

I think, unfortunately, this may well be a "limitation" mouse users are stuck with, after all, we cannot change the game physics based on controller used. I guess with a mouse we really need to define keys for roll and still use that as a fastest way to turn the ship in combat. Though of course the digital nature of keyboard input vs analogue joystick give us a distinct lack of refinement.

Indeed, and its what I'm doing, with keys set for roll left/right - however there is a control setting for "yaw-roll" which sounds like it toggles the mode between the two, so you could use the mouse to roll as well as yaw by holding say the shift key down.
I've not tried it yet, but there are also other options such as yaw into roll and so on.

I guess the last Space Sim I played with a joystick was Privateer 2, which was nice.
But after that it was Freelancer with a mouse, which I loved.
I also played the X games with a mouse, which was serviceable, as I wasn't really into dogfighting in X anyway. More exploring, trading, building etc.

I got the Logitech extreme Pro 2nd had (but in good condition) so it was a very small investment. So no big deal if I prefer the mouse+keyboard option.

As I haven't actually bought ED yet and am waiting until it goes live, I have plenty of opportunities to wait and see how the Mouse+keyboard option develops over the ED project lifecycle.

It's very promising you saying it's a good option though.
I should add the dogfighting/PvP aspect is going to be secondary for me anyway.
I'm looking forward to trading, exploring, upgrading the ship etc.
So it may well be that the Mouse+keyboard is "good enough" for me.

Currently playing, on and off, X Rebirth with a mouse and it's ok for the most part. However, that game, like Freelancer (to a degree) has guns which track the mouse cursor, making shooting things much easier. I assume, with fixed guns at least, this isn't how ED works.

Tried the Star Citizen Arena Commander mode last night - after another 12gb download, because the installer screwed up AGAIN - totally horrible with a mouse, laggy and unresponsive. Plus it has the mother of all dead spots, I'll not be bothering with that again - at least until I do get a joystick.

Mouse is vastly superior in SC since you aim your guns along with your direction when moving the mouse, so you point'n'click your targets in space similar to Freelancer/War Thunder. Your flight control will probably improve with a joystick, but your aim will be gimped enough that it's not worth ir.

Question, how do you mouse users "free look" around the cockpit? ie; If you want to look up, left/right to track an enemy?

i'm not.. i use the radar and the last direction i saw them fly :) (but my tracker unit should be arriving today - so that will change :D )

also because of the massive amount of FPS games ive been playing i'm always pushing on the throttle forward.. but i'm getting better at not doing it so much :D

Really? That's troublesome as I thought the mouse control was terrible when I tried Arena Commander for the first time last night. To be fair though, the whole experience was pretty horrible lol. Think I'll wait a while before dipping back in there...which will likely mean another 12gb download taking 7 hrs! lol.

Glad its not just me. I figured it was a bug also. I'm learning to live with it for now but once this is fixed the mouse control will be perfect.

Can you link the video please?

According to the ticket I raised on this, it should be fixed and in next release now.

I tried playing with a 3D Pro but found it oddly uncomfortable. Like most have said, once you get k/m set up properly, it's completely fine. Had a look at a X52 and almost immediately wanted my k/m back. Maybe it's a comfort blanket thing...

I gave up with the K/M after the first couple of nights.
Could not get on with it.

Bought a cheap Hotas and took to it like a duck to water.
Much more instinctive.

Also i'm getting a rift so want to keep the controls as immersive as possible.
