HP Reverb G2... without Mixed Reality controllers

I am looking for an upgrade for the winter holidays. I see the HP Reverb G2 is now available, but the package which includes the mixed reality controllers is sold out. I would only be wanting to use the headset for Elite so that wouldn't be too much of a minus for me, but is it possible to set up the headset for use in Elite without any controllers?

If not then could someone tell me the best place to buy these controllers? The prices I've seen look a bit ridiculous

You can, from what I remember.

I bought mine without controllers thinking I could do without them. But, a few weeks later I bought a set of ACER WMR controllers cheap from Ebay. What a difference that made!
Accessing your desktop or using Steam VR with your headset on is just so much easier with controllers.
Also means you won't have any issues playing other VR games.

Any WMR controllers should work, doesn't have to be the ones from HP.

Honestly if they would just release a version of the Reverb without WMR, I'd be extremely happy. Having SteamVR launch thru the buggy WMR software isn't ideal.

I was hoping the Reverb would give Microsoft some incentive to improve Mixed Reality. Somerled is right. I'd be hankering after motion controllers if I got the headset without them

I might as well save on postage and wait for the full package to become available
Thanks for the responses

Yes, you can absolutely set up and use a G2 without the controllers - just skip the controller setup screen when it comes up.

I use it for MSFS and ED and the controllers have never come out of the box. :)

I totally agree. I have the same thing - I have not used controllers at all for a whole year since the appearance of this helmet on sale on the market. For the Elite, controllers are not needed.

Oh no <sigh>
Now I'm in two minds. I think I'll wait a bit until my patience runs out... And hope the controller-free package doesn't get snapped up in the meantime

There may even be some sort of Black Friday deal <shrug of hope>

I wonder if it's any better in Windows 11?

Edit: Found this...

SteamVR boot with Mixed Reality Portal launch

  • New setting available to automatically launch SteamVR when WMR launches, allowing you to bypass WMR home space and jump directly into SteamVR.
    • This new setting can be found in the Settings app under Mixed Reality > Startup and Desktop > Automatic Startup.
Still uses WMR though :(

This only works with Windows 11?

Thanks for all the advice from everyone. HP are quick at delivering their goods. I got my headset sans controllers and I'm very happy with it

I did make a stupid mistake. I loaded up Elite and my first reaction was "Jesus flippin' eck!". It looked wonderful!. But it was playing like a series of picture postcards. What I'd done was left all the tweaks to make the CV1 look half decent on the HP Reverb. It worked okay once I'd adjusted the settings to native resolution

I wish I hadn't seen how good it could look tho. Now I'm hankering for a 30xx series graphics card <sigh>

Sorry For hi-jacking the thread, but I’m a new G2 owner (without controllers, cuz I don’t need them), but my question is related to ED/WMR/SteamVR. I Bought ED from the frontier store an Age ago before it was even available on Steam. At that time I was using a CV1 with Oculus software.

However, I couldn’t get ED to launch in VR On the G2. I then discovered WMR for SteamVR and found that it would then work. Is this the only way to run ED in VR?
I’m not a fan of SteamVR.

Yes, you need SteamVR to run ED in VR using a G2.

Yep. SteamVR is clunky compared to Oculus. I'm finding I've got to go and actually look at the flat-o-vision monitor to get the third party software up and running in the background
